Martes Morning Movie : Los Invisibles, Part I

Yesterday, I wrote to you all about a four part film released by Amnesty International and Gael Garcia Bernal, los Invisibles. The film focuses on Central American immigrants traveling through Mexico into the United States. Today, as promised, here is part one of the film, titled Seaworld. Why Seaworld ? Because that is how one little girl in the film envisions the United States to be like.

What struck me was how he opening images of this part focused very much on the idea of migration as male. When we do hear from a woman it is in the context of an entire family, where a woman says that she feels guilty for being Latina, thinking aloud that if she wasn’t perhaps she and hers would be treated better. I was also struck by the communal atmospheres of the shelters, where migrants sharing the same experience share space and information. But I wonder what of those women who travel alone, without family? What of those who do not or cannot take advantage of the shelters?
