The Federal Hate Crime trial against Brandon Piekarsky and Derrick Donchak, accused of beating Luis Ramirez to death because he was Mexican/Latino is underway.

This trial comes after indictments in December of last year that charge the two men and three police officers in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania of violating Luis Ramirez’s civil rights and conspiring to cover up that violation. In the original criminal trial held last summer, Piekarsky was found not guilty of third degree murder, while Donchak was acquitted of aggravated assault.

In other words, they got away with murder and will continue to get away with murder.

Yesterday, I wrote about how I understood why some Latinos may sit this election out, especially in the face of increasing immigrant enforcement policies while candidates pay lip service to change and reform on the campaign trail.

Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director John Morton held a press conference yesterday that revealed more information about the deportation numbers under the Obama administration and the truth about Secure Communities.

During that announcement, which was livestreamed, according to America’s Voice, ICE announced 392,000 deportations last yr. 195k “criminal.” Which would make 197k non-criminal deported. Napolitano, on the record, stated that it is not possible for localities to opt out of “secure communities” program , contradicting earlier statements indicating that localities could opt-out.

Soon VivirLatino will be out of it’s toddler years and into out pre-school years. Next week we turn 5. If you have been followers of us for any length of time then you know that over the last two years we have had a number of problems with our hosting. From ridiculous overage charges anytime we post about something remotely popular (see Ricky Martin’s coming out posts) to database connectivity issues that have shut our site down at time for hours to days.

We’ve had enough and hopefully you have too.

We want to start out next 5 years running smoothly and without the fear of logging on to get Latino political/cultural news and commentary only to get an error message.

To get more reliable servers we need something we don’t have. Money. The little money we do get from advertising goes to pay the servers we have and overage fees. Our editors are not getting paid at the moment and that includes yours truly. VivirLatino is and in a way always has been a labor of love and commitment to our personal values and beliefs. We are not (contrary to what the haters say) funded by any organization.

We are asking you: our readers, our twitter followers, our facebook fans to consider Chipping In so that we can move our servers. To move and keep us online for the next year we need $500.

Can you help?

Mil gracias for your support and love.

Let’s get this out of the way.

Yes, the Republicans as a party have shown nothing but contempt for Latinos, especially immigrant Latinos, LGBT Latinos, poor Latinos and all the intersections and iterations of the aforementioned.

Is that enough for Latinos to run to the polls and vote Democrat in less than a month? All signs point to no. Polls abound pointing that the mythical Latino voter supports the Democratic party in theory but aren’t convinced enough to keep the Dems in office.

And why would that be?

It’s a little too easy to merely point out the fact that the Obama administration has failed to cumplir it’s promesa to the Latino community on comprehensive immigration reform. To rely on that as the reason to not vote/not vote Dem, makes the Latino electorate look irresponsible and passes blame onto the voter. Rather, perhaps the media who is sounding alarm bells about the lack of Latino loyalty and will should look at what the Democrats have done against immigrant communities.

Latina Americans being used as medical guinea pigs for U.S. medical advancement isn’t the stuff of nightmares or science fiction. Look up for example how the birth control pill that many women claim as part of their liberation came to be.
Last week, the U.S. apologized for knowingly, purposely, and without consent infecting anywhere between 700 to over 1,00 Guatemalan prisoners of the CIA, mental patients, soldiers, sex workers and children in the 1940′s with sexually transmitted illnesses like syphilis and gonorrhea in order to test the effectiveness of antibiotics The experiments came to light five years ago, stumbled upon by a professor researching the Tuskegee syphilis study, where African -Americans were withheld treatment so that scientists could observe the progression of the illness, but were only just made public.

I don’t watch cable news. I don’t have cable. All my news comes from good old fashioned sources like print media and of course, the internet. I don’t follow Rick Sanchez on twitter nor have I seen much of his work. What I have seen from him usually irritates me and represents a narrow minded, assimilationist perspective of what Latinidad should look like.
What I do know for sure, is that Rick Sanchez was fired from CNN last Friday, one day after making remarks that have been called everything from controversial to anti-semitic.

According to CNN’s own site, Sanchez “left” the company following a critique on Jon Stewart that ended up being a rant against CNN management and then against Jewish people, whose oppressed status he doubted.

On Thursday, Sanchez appeared on the XM Sirius radio program “Stand-Up with Pete Dominick.” During the interview with Dominick, Sanchez called “The Daily Show’s” Jon Stewart “a bigot” and then said that he was bigoted against “everybody else who’s not like him. Look at his show, I mean, what does he surround himself with?”…I’m telling you that everybody who runs CNN is a lot like Stewart, and a lot of people who run all the other networks are a lot like Stewart, and to imply that somehow they, the people in this country who are Jewish, are an oppressed minority? Yeah,” Sanchez responded.

Eight undocumented youth and students today will be appearing in a Washington D.C. court on charges stemming from sitting in the offices of Senator Reid (D-NV) and Senator McCain (R-AZ) on July 20th of this year. The eight: Reyna Wences from Illinois, Dulce Matuz from Arizona, Myrna Orozco from Missouri, Tania Unzueta from Illinois, Erika Andiola from Arizona, Nicolas Gonzales from Illinois, Laura Lopez from California, and Isabel Castillo from Virginia were charged with “illegal entry” and if found guilty could face up to a year in prision and $1000 fine. Additionally once the criminal trial is over, Department of Homeland Security could get involved and place the students in deportation proceedings.

The eight are expected to present their own defense including presenting testimony, interrogating witnesses, and making closing arguments.
