Police in LA Kill Guatemalan Day Laborer, Community Demands Answers

Last Sunday, Manuel Jamines was shot and killed by police in Los Angeles. The why depends on who you ask. According to police, Jamines, aged 37, was drunk and was waving a knife around. Police claim that they ordered Jamines to drop the knife in English and in Spanish and when he didn’t, they shot and killed him. Others say that there was no knife and those that say there was say that directives were given by police only in English. The police claim a knife was recovered at the scene.

Edited to add (2:22 pm EST) that some reports that I am now reading say that Jamines may not have spoken Spanish that well either because he was an indigenous Guatemalan. This draws parallels to what happened with Cirila Baltazar Cruz

For two nights in the row the Latino community has taken to the streets, calling the killing an example of excessive use of police force. During those protests, riot police have fired foam projectiles and arrested over 20 people, mostly for failure to disperse and unlawful assembly.

This reminds me of a similar case in , Queens, NY back in 1997 when Dominican cook Jose Librado Sanchez was shot and killed by the NYPD saying that he threatened the officers with a knife. The officers, according to some witnesses, were in plain clothes and did not identify themselves when they they raided the restaurant. A knife, allegedly used by Sanchez to threaten police was also recovered at the scene.

My experiences here in NYC have led me to not do what most city mayors caution the public to do, that is give the officers the benefit of the doubt. The pattern and practice of using excessive force against people of color communities, often leading to death, has led me to give the dead and those they leave behind the benefit of the doubt.

May there be justice for Manuel Jamines.

all three officers involved in this incident were latinos. This is not an easy situation to understand but wide scale rioting and destruction of property, both public and private is wrong.

Being a Latino doesn’t excuse the actions nor does it absolve the accusation of racism. I have done enough reading on police dynamics to know that inside departments the only raza is blue and in fact officers of color may be more brutal towards their own communities to “prove themselves”.

I am not a Los Angeleno so I would invite those in the LA area to share their thoughts on what is going down. That said, I have a hard time using the word riot when for years there has been systemic police violence against people of color communities by law enforcement.

I am not a proponent of violence but I am no pacifist either.

I was born and raised in Los Angeles. 26 now. Currently I’m actually living in Buenos Aires so I heard about this through a friend. LA has unfortunately a long history of police killing of minorities–for all the years I lived in LA I don’t ever remember a white person being accidently shot by the police.

That being said I think the fact that all three officers were Latino does change the dynamics somewhat. That usually doesn’t happen in incidents like these that I’ve seen before, and IMO, it does make me believe what happened, may have happened the way it did. But there is always room for doubt.

Several high school classmates of mine are cops now. Being a cop in LA is not an easy job. I think people forget that sometimes. LA still has a huge gang problem and many areas of the city are pretty rough. In the 90s and early 2000s there were a lot of bad and corrupt cops–many of those have been rooted out. I’m kind of rambling as I really don’t know what to make of this case. It definitely needs to be investigated but people really shouldn’t jump to conclusions either way.

In LA, you learn very quickly that if you are brown or black, you do what the police say…..it’s a very sad sad reality. I just hope this case is investigated thoroughly! Just my two cents.

being a Latino doesn’t mean you can’t be a dick or that you can’t be working in the interest of people that don’t look like you.

Chicano future tense

Police brutality in recent times has taken on both a qualitative and quantitative leap in extent, range and depth.
I am certain that due to the ongoing collapse of America socially, politically and economically the word has been put out nationally to all police departments to beat, kill and intimidate Americans OF ALL RACES.
In the past it was almost exlusively people of color who were brutalized and murdered by cops.Things have changed.
Now we are seeing more and more reports of of police beating up and brutalizing white people, even middle class types as well as elderly white men, women, teens and children..
I am absolutely certain that this development is by design being enforced and carried out as a POLITICAL agenda and strategy of creating safety and security for corporate America and it’s political class of flunkies who obediently carry out their interests and their needs of maintaing control over an America in decline.
The last thing the rulers want to see are Americans of all races refusing to obey and submit to unjust outrageous corruption and perversion of power.
The goal of police brutality,of the careless and wonton killing of people.. is to INTIMIDATE,DOMINATE and TERRORIZE the people into submission and obedience..to prevent potential REBELLIONS and yes potential REVOLUTION!
They see these things coming up over the horizon..they are fully aware that America is on the verge of implosion,of massive rebellion and protest.
The ruling class has put out the word to police departments across the country giving and encouraging them them, giving them full license to kill and brutalize anyone they damn well feel like jacking-up at any time.
The word is out to cops to go ahead and indulge their sick ass sadism,to unleash and give full expression to their insane pathological urges.
This is some sick twisted shit that’s going on out their in America and all Americans should be made aware that such violence and brutality coming from the police is at the source primarily political motivated strategies and tactics, meant to keep Americans intimidated, quiet, afraid and submissive.

Oops, sorry I guess I should have read the name of this post. Not going to get an unbiased opinion here! I guess everyone needs a place to get together and feel sorry for themselves.

Telling people to go back where they came from is not an opinion. That’s hate speech and it is not tolerated.

Try being in a cops shoes for once, until you have stop second guessing what they do as law enforcement officers.
