Yesterday morning, the United States Department of Justice announced the filing of a lawsuit against Maricopa County, Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio over his refusal to cooperate with a federal civil rights investigation by refusing to turn over requested documents for a year and a half.

For the last three years, we too have been paying close attention to Arpaio’s racist tactics which in many ways paved the way for state-wide laws like SB1070 and the nation wide copycats.

In 2007, Arpaio set up a hotline for people to “report” the undocumented. In 2003 he became a fame puta (meant in the worst possible way) by going on TV.

What we have especially paid attention to is the way that Arpaio has used his campaign against the Latino community to especially hurt women and children. For example, in March of last year, guards that took a woman into custody were accused of breaking her arm and then there is the shackling of women while giving birth.
