Vamos Pa’Argentina : They Legalized Gay Marriage

They may have not gone as far as they would have likein the World Cup pero Argentina has something else to celebrate. Argentina is the first Latin American country to grant gay couples the same legal rights, responsibilities and protections that marriage brings to heterosexual couples.

This isn’t some half assed civil union deal, it’s marriage.

The Argentina Senate bill was passed earlier this morning 33 lawmakers voted in favor, 27 against, with three abstentions.
This follows the earlier passing of a House version of the bill. Presidenta Cristina Fernandez has stated that she will not veto the bill meaning : a tirar arroz!

While this is cause for celebration, marriage equity is not and should not be the end all/be all for the Latin American lgbtq community, or the lgbtq community anywhere. Almost daily there are disgusting violent crimes of hate and there needs to be widespread and continued discussion on dramatically shifting the way media and the general public engages on these fundementally human rights issues. The fact that the right to marry (whether you’re for marriage or not) needs to be fought over is sad, just like it’s sad that the right to access sensitive adequate health care and safety needs to be fought for.

Pero it is nice to have a little good news verdad?
