VL At The Cine: Despicable Me

This review isn’t going to be too long because I absolutely adore the film Despicable Me! It is a children’s film and in 3D, which seems to be the new route films are going these days, but it’s the kind of 3D film that is amazing!

When I first was invited to attend a screening I didn’t think there would be too much I’d enjoy about the film. The trailers didn’t really give a good idea of what the film was about or the humor that was presented. So when I arrived at the screening and sat in a theater filled with children under the age of 10, I really asked myself: “Bi, are you ready for this?”

And the answer was: No I wasn’t ready.

As the film began all of the 3D images were really 3D, and when I say that I mean that you really felt that the images were coming out at you, they were surprising, startling and fun! The film follows the main character Gru (voice Steve Carell) who is the worlds number one supervillain and has big plans for his next move: to steal the moon. He seeks funding from the evil bank (which used to be Lehman Brothers, that alone cracked me up for a good 30 seconds!). We follow Gru as he meets his new rival, Vector (voice Jason Seagel) who has stolen Egyptian pyramids. Their rivalry begins as both of them have their sights set on the moon.

Gru realizes that one of Vector’s vices are cookies that three young girls, Margo, Edith, and Agnes, living in a orphanage are selling. Gru plans to get into Vector’s house via the girls when they drop off his cookie order. The way he plans to do this is by adopting Margo, Edith and Agnes. By becoming their adoptive father, Gru learns how to experience, give and receive affection. We get a glimpse into his own upbringing with his single mother who was less than exceptional at providing affirmation and affection to him.

At the end of the film, as many children’s films tend to do, there is a happy ending. But, the happy ending occurs to the “bad guy” in a very “How The Grinch Stole Christmas” way, where there is a change of heart, a raising of consciousness, and a new ability to allow love into their lives which expands their goals and dreams. It would have been fabulous if this film came out in time for Father’s Day, but it’s also a fabulous film that I found myself laughing at constantly, the children in the theater enjoyed the film as well, and has a great soundtrack by Pharell with songs by Robin Thicke and the Bee Gees.

If you want to have a more in depth conversation with an older child you take to see the film, ask them what they think it means that everyone in the theater with their 3D glasses on looks like Vector!

VL Verdict: 9.5 stars! Start saving your money it’s in theaters July 9!
