The student shyly raised her hand and said, “My mom … she says that Barack Obama is taking everybody away that doesn’t have papers.”
Mrs. Obama replied: “Yeah, well that’s something that we have to work on, right? To make sure that people can be here with the right kind of papers, right? That’s exactly right.”
The girl then said quietly, “But my mom doesn’t have any …” and trailed off.
Mrs. Obama replied: “Well, we have to work on that. We have to fix that, and everybody’s got to work together in Congress to make sure that happens. That’s right.”
Here is video of the exchange:
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go lay down and sob my brains out.
i’m from silver spring, md originally and this is the reality among many of the community members. when i was being raised there over 30 years ago we were one of a handful of Latino families. MD is very diverse with many immigrant families that are not only Latino pero African as well.
Not to be devil’s advocate and defend the administrations centrisms. But. I really didn’t get that Mrs. Obama was blaming the mother in her answer. I’ve watched this two times, in two different days. And I keep getting the impression that this is Michelle Obama’s way of blaming lack of bipartisanship in Congress and the “we” is politicians.
The thing is that the bipartisan arguement, in my opinion is bs. Dem after Dem has said they will do something, present a bill but all they do is create “proposals” that will earn them praise and never move beyond that.
Plus if Obama really wanted to do something, he could put a moratorium on deportations until there was a CIR bill.
I agree with you Shanali. I watched the video a few times and I don’t get that message from her, that she blames the mom. I also think (rightly or not) taht she’s not about to make waves since she doesn’t necessarily have much influence on the outcome of immigration laws, and her husband is vulnerable to even more bs if she does make waves. So basically what i mean is that in her shoes, I’d be thinking ‘why make waves I can’t back up’. I also got the impression that she was criticizing the lack of competence in Congress and in doing so pointing out that neither she nor her husband can change things without these peoples’ help.
I say let’s pick our enemies wisely and strategically, and she’s not one of them.
I was wondering that too, bi, I lost my breath when she said that because–OMG, what hell did she just bring down on herself and her mother, when all she’s doing is *advocating* for herself and her mother?
Her mother must be having a heart attack from stress right now. ANd I hope to god that girl isn’t getting or will be getting punished for speaking out by losing her mother.
And she may have given the old party line of bipartisanship and by the “papers” she may be talking about are the infamous “id cards” with fingerprints. However, this is one of the first times where I see one politician go in front of a camera and state that the problem needs to be fixed so that everyone can get documentations without mentioning: id cards, fingerprinting, law enforcement and a fence – in the same mouthful.
As I said, I’m not at all excusing centrism in the administration. This is one bill where it was such obvious public relations attempt by Schummer and Graham that is not even funny. I was in a bus March 21, 2010, listening to Schummer say that we needed a second Republican sponsor of the bill. The first words out of my mouth to the organizer in that bus were:
“When has any bill, -ever-, needed more than one sponsor for each party?” I was then told that, while the organizer understood my point of view, that I had to remember all opinions needed to be kept respectful of all ideologies. I took it as an “STFU, lets not rile up the people with the obvious right now”. CIR has been anything but comprehensive from the start. And now with Afghanistan, China, the Economy, North Korea and an Oil Spill, not even the blatantly obvious profiling in Arizona is going to stop the Democratic Party from creating excuses about where we fall in the “news cycle” priority list.
Well essentially it has been this drive for bi-partisanship, especially post health care reform that killed CIR porque the Democrats have shown zero political will.
As for if it’s the first time I heard politician mention papers without the enforcement measure: mujer, I have heard soooo much already I can’t even remember. ja ja.
Je, je…well since March 21st…I might also count the politicians who got arrested this week in the Federal building.
But I’m definitely not counting Bloomberg and not counting anyone that spoke up during March 21st.
Because when you are talking on a stage about helping the people and then on your right there is a huge concert event screen with a presentation enumerating all the ways the new bill will facilitate the criminalization of Latinos, I don’t count it.
I know CIR is dead, but hope’s th elast to die. And yea, If I’m that kid’s mom I’d be traying to figure out how to tell my daughter I’m proud that she spoke up but next time don’t out the family! i hope they don’t get messed with..
Know that at least you as a human being have not fallen into the age-old comfortable trap of dehumanization. If humans didn’t have this tactic, the world would look a lot different than it does.

So basically, Mrs. Obama put the blame on the mother for not having the right papers, not on the fucked up system.

One of the first things that came to mind was: aw man, are they going to target this young girl and her family? I read this link: http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/politics/Feds-Not-Pursuing-After-Girl-Says-Mom-Lacks-Papers-94489344.html

Hmm really good points Bianca and Macha. Honestly the first thing that I thought about was if the hija was gonna get punished for speaking up.
As to the point about letting them duke it out in Congress, Sabina, it’s not gonna happen. Not this year anyway. CIR is pretty much dead

La Macha,
Know that at least you as a human being have not fallen into the age-old comfortable trap of dehumanization. If humans didn’t have this tactic, the world would look a lot different than it does.
