Ms. Drrrty Aguilera

I’ve been looking forward to the resurgence of Christina Aguilera–she’s always been one of my more liked teen pop sensations. I think she can actually sing, and she has a much better head on her shoulders than almost all of the other teen pop stars that came of age with her.

I also think she’s more interesting than Lady Gaga (who people are asking if Aguilera is copy catting! Hello folks, Aguilera was here first!!!) if only because she came about her style in spite of intense pressure and media attention to do otherwise. She could’ve capitulated to the demands for innocent sex kitten (think Brittney Spears), but instead *honestly* subverted sexuality–that is, instead of doing a highly manufactured “shocking” in your face sexuality that Lady Gaga does, Aguilera’s chosen sexual expression is a type of resistances born out of actual need.

So to me, Christina’s latest photo shoot on GQ speaks to far more interesting motives and expressions than Lady Gaga’s dildo appearance did, even if the photos do appear to be “tamer” than Lady Gaga’s.

One picture is below the fold, (slightly NSFW) and the rest of the pictures are at this link!

No se, I’m not sure I’m buying it on Aguilera. I was never a fan of hers bc even though she can sing very well, i never thought she sang anything that interesting. Although I did respect that she responded to Eminem’s dickheaded song lyrics about her. Maybe i dont know enough about her, but from where i stand she’ s another latin explosion barbie. which is cool for what it is, but I’m mot sure she gets to have the “interesting” or much less the “subversive” label. If Christina is subversive, what the hell is Frida, or Astrid Hadad, or the many other subversive ladies out there.. cheers to her for being a successful Latina, but do we have always have to settle for apples when we can get oranges?

really good points, sabina–I should clarify what I said–she’s *pop subversive*–she’s *pop* interesting!!! :P You’re totally right, she’s NO frida by any stretch of the imagination–but I think she is interesting in a pop music sense, and subversive in a pop music sense.

I’ve been following her since her first album, and she definitly made deliberate choices that carried her away from what was expected of her–so they may not be radical or even lasting subversive–but she definitly stood up for herself as a young woman with god knows how much pressure on her to follow the road of brittney spears.I think a lot of the reason she’s not gone through the breakdown and collapse that brittney has is because she made different choices and stood up for herself in a way that didn’t gain her any fans….

I mean, don’t get me wrong, she’s definitly used sexuality to make her what she is, she’s conformed to the role of teen sensation in that she’s wrapped sexuality around herself—but she’s demanded it be a different type of sexuality. One that she’s in control of. Like that Drrrty video–she made be flaunting her ass everywhere, but she’s gonna beat your ass if you do more than look, right? compare that to brittney spears, even in her womanizer video, she’s laying naked on her back, writhing. You *may* get what you want if you push a little. The messages are totally different.

I respect Christina for that. She’s the same age as spears, she faced the same pressure to be what Brittney is, and she managed to twist it to something that left her with a little control…

funny story, I thought that Aguilera and Sharika were the same person. This s the time I listened to my sister’s music and both had albums in Spanish. I respect Aguilera as a musician but When I look back I have soft spot for Sharika ( pre- hips don’t lie) I mean you listen to her songs in Spanish and they have such dept and soul. Some of her current songs are pretty good( I tend to avoid her English songs) but I still want the time when she had black raven hair and singing “no creo”. But yeah, I totally agree with Sabina.
On other note, that pic reminded a lot of 1950s fetish photography. Not That’s a bad thing

I hear you macha, I was having a cabrona moment remembering when i was 14 and girls like christina made me feel ugly and fat.. but now that ladymorgue mentioned Shakira, i see your point even better. My younger friends that never heard her piez descalzos album hate her for being another bleach blonde latina. But I have a soft spot for her because I know she’s smarter than “hips don’t lie” and I’m hoping she’ll come back around.. I have to admit I like the loba song, IN SPANISH….even tho the video is abit dissapointing cause the girl just cant dance. Chingado you would think that the hip moves would mean she has moves in general. But na, she’s no janet…

CHEERS to them all.. and may we get a real big nalga star one of these days! miss you Selena ;)
