22 Apr 2010I got this forwarded to me on facebook. I think it’s a really good idea–it’s a petition to boycott Arizona Diamondbacks, who are the third highest contributor’s to the National Republican Senatorial Committee.
OUR TARGET | THE ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS
In 2010, the National Republican Senatorial Committee’s 3rd highest Contributor was the Arizona Diamondbacks ($121,600) as well as the 20th highest contribution to Senator John McCain who openly supports the state measure ($9,400).As a business, the Arizona Diamondbacks must be held accountable for giving to a machine that has targeted immigrants in Arizona.
OUR METHOD | BOYCOTT THEIR BUSINESS
We can support the boycott when the Diamondbacks come to play in our cities across the country, namely where there is a heavy concentration of Latinos and immigrants, namely Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, San Francisco, and New York. For those of you who attend Dodger games, the audience is always roughly 80% folks of color, and we’re sure it is the same elsewhere, so this would have huge ramifications for sales of tickets and merchandise if supported by our communities. We have compiled the donations from this family to the Republican machine in Arizona, outlined next.

Arizona Governor Brewer is keeping mum on if she will sign SB 1070 or not, only saying that she will do the right thing. The comunidad sure isn’t keeping quiet though. There’s been a strong petition campaign (as well as a call-in campaign) urging Brewer to veto the bill.
On Tuesday, a coalition of organizations including Border Action Network, Presente.org, Alto Arizona!, America’s Voice, Reform Immigration FOR America, United Farm Workers, and the National Council of la Raza delivered more than 50,000 signatures asking the governor to veto SB 1070.
My concern is that despite all the calls, emails, signatures and walk-outs, Brewer may just let the bill become a law by not doing anything.

22 Apr 2010I love zines and secretly would love to have someone sit me down and walk me through making one (cuz I’m afraid of effing it up). In the meantime I’m happy to promote the zines of others especially if some of my favorite mamis and rwoc on the planet are a part of them, and yes I include myself.
“Don’t Leave Your Friends Behind” #3 is the third issue of a zine geared toward the non-parent radical community about how to be an ally to the parent(s) and children in their midst.
We made a PDF to better share it, so you can print, and distribute as you like: ithttp://issuu.com/strongwindsahead/docs/don_tleaveyourfriendsbehindzine3.bw.final
You can download the PDF for free pero you can also get a hard copy for $3. Click on the Don’t Leave Your Friends Behind Blog.

21 Apr 2010Colorlines has a good write up about the demise of my favorite show, Ugly Betty. It’s last show was last Thursday night–it will live on in Netflix for me, but I was really heartbroken to find out it was cancelled. Not only did it have the amazing Salma scenes, but it featured complex and powerful women of color as the lead characters AND queered things up beautifully. Which brings me to my favorite scene ever on any TV anywhere.
No. 1—It was real. Networks are increasingly targeting Latino viewers, but “Ugly Betty” was the first primetime show to address real issues Latinos in the U.S. face—like immigration laws and trying to assimilate to U.S. culture. Lisa Navarrete, a vice president for the National Council of La Raza says “the plot line illustrated the complexity of the lives of many undocumented immigrants who are otherwise integrated into American life.”
No. 2—Betty Suarez was no Jennifer Lopez. And she was the first TV Latina who lived in “both” worlds—the white professional Manhattan world and a Mexican working class home in Queens, NY.
No. 3—It was queer. Betty’s family accepted her brother Justin’s love for musicals and fashion from a very young age and never discouraged him from following his interests—which included Austin, his boyfriend. The show also provided a compelling and human portrait of Alex Meade, who transformed into Alexis.
No. 4—It opened other closets, too. Ignacio Suarez’s undocumented immigration status had its own storyline. That’s a coming out tale for 2010.
No. 5—And still, it was a family affair. “Ugly Betty” did all of this while still bridging the generational divide. Tias and Ninas alike were glued to Betty La Fea.

21 Apr 2010I want to keep drawing people’s attention to what is happening in Arizona and the efforts against it.
Pressure has been mounting against the racist, anti-immigrant SB1070, which essentially expands statewide the anti-Latino harassment and criminalization that Sheriff Joe Arpaio made famous in Maricopa County.
Coming out in a sad attempt to keep himself politically relevant, John McCain came out in favor of SB1070 because it protects everyone from those criminally minded immigrants.
There are strong efforts against the measure happening both locally and nationwide. azcentral.com is reporting:
As of Monday, the Governor’s Office had received 1,356 calls, e-mails and faxes in favor of SB 1070 and 11,931 against the bill.
And yesterday, a group of college students participated in an act of civil disobedience, sacrificing their own freedom in order to make a statement in defense of the freedom of their community.
SB1070 (ull text PDF here) is bad enough, but the Arizona House of Representatives also voted to pass what’s being called a “birther” bill which requires that presidential candidates prove, with papers of course, that they are a “natural born citizen”. Hmm I wonder who that is aimed at?
At the moment, most people expect Gov. Jan Brewer to sign the bill into law or sit on her hands and do nothing which would make SB1070 law by default.
What do you all think of this song/video? I admit to having mixed feelings about some of the lyrics and the video feels a little too “We are the World” ish for my taste. The redeeming moment for me was when la Mala Rodriguez enters.
According to amigo and ‘hood vecino Andrés of Blabbeando, all proceeds will go to Intermón OxFam.
And yeah, Andrés, I noticed how white all the singers were too.

21 Apr 2010I don’t think many immigrants in NYC are celebrating NYC Immigrant Heritage Week, which ends today. At the Opportunity Agenda event on the immigration movement and the arts, Maria Hinojosa asked referred to the three-term Mayor’s pro-immigrant comments but looking at the reality of immigrant life here in NYC, I am reminded of the words of Chung-Wha Hong, Executive Director of the NY Immigration Coalition, who talked about making sure that the rhetoric and the policy intersect.
Bloomberg is a businessman as much as he is a politician, meaning he will talk out of both sides of his mouth so long as it promotes his own power. While Bloomberg plays pro-migrant mayor, he also says that he thinks the Tea Party is a good thing. We all know where the Tea Party movement stands when it comes to immigration. Bloomberg thinks he can get away with saying he supports both immigrants and hate groups by saying one thing to one group and another thing to another.
But who has he not said anything to? What has Bloomberg not spoken about?

20 Apr 2010We don’t have to call Jeffrey Conroy, the young man who killed Marcelo Lucero, alleged killer anymore but legally we can’t call him a murderer. Yesterday’s convictions of Conroy on hate crime manslaughter and gang assault mean that his actions were criminal and filled with bias and hate towards immigrants, especially “Mexicans” even if Lucero was Ecuadorian but the jury choosing manslaughter over murder, which was also on the table, means that the jury thought that Conroy didn’t mean to kill Lucero.
I have written over and over again some of the problems with the hate crimes context being expected to solve everything especially given the growing prison industrial complex that has historically used people of color as human fodder and most recently is looking to expand using Latino immigrants. Macha has written on the double edge sword in seeking justice when our killers look like us or are a part of us.
I have read and heard people saying that the verdict yesterday means justice has been served. Others have said that the lack of a conviction on the murder charge shows that there is still a disconnect in terms of how critical the situation is for Latinos when it comes to the way the anti-immigrant rhetoric has turned into a cry for action to many.
For Marcelo’s family, justice will never be fully served as no charge or years in prison can bring him back. And i will admit to a deep gut desire to wanting a murder conviction for Conroy, to wanting a life sentence. No it’s not radical, pero after years of seeing so many mothers weeping at the site of their child’s death, a grief-stricken part wants to sit smugly and watch someone go to jail for a long time for killing parts of our community, an eye for an eye justice as someone said in the comments yesterday.
Pero as people were talking about the Lucero verdict yesterday (although not enough people in my opinion were talking about it), I received an email from an amiga of Amanda Gonzalez-Andujar who is planning a memorial service and vigil. This morning I read about another mujer, Ashley Santiago, who was killed in Puerto Rico. I was thinking of all the vigils and rallies I have gone to, not just in this last year pero over my 15 some odd years in the “movements”. Finally I was thinking about how last month I had to explain to my 3 year old why Altagracia Mayi was crying and why we were marching.
Our communities are far from finding justice and I think part of it is that we are looking for it or expecting it from all the wrong places.
