23 Apr 2010I came to this video through the Amplify Your Voice website. Sarah wrote a post called WTF Arizona?? Young people fight back in AZ and across the country for immigrant rights! This peaceful demonstration occurred on April 20, 2010. Sarah writes:
Luckily, young people are standing up and fighting back. In Arizona, a group of nine students turned to non-violent civil disobedience by chaining themselves to the state capitol in Arizona in protest of SB 1070. They were subsequently arrested. Check out the video here:

23 Apr 2010This seems like a timely post. I just showed this video to my Sociology students this week. I told them about the rights they have. How we give them up when we don’t know what they are. Our 4th Amendment right (along with several others) has just been taken away by the Arizona decision on SB1070. Although the focus is on young people, I think the information is extremely useful for everyone.
A nonprofit organization called Flex Your Rights created this video and provides it free of charge via their YouTube channel. They have just created a new video: 10 Rules for Dealing With Police. I found this short video about police encounters with three examples of what people may say or do and what our rights are and what to say. (Unfortunately, these videos are only in English and do not have subtitles). The first one is called: What To Do When Stopped By Police. PLEASE share this with people in your community.
Busted! A Citizens Guide To Surviving Police Encounters can be seen in full below.

23 Apr 2010But is it too little, too late?
Today President Obama finally made a comment against Arizona Bill SB1070.
“Our failure to act responsibly at the Federal level will only open the door to irresponsiblity by others,” Obama said. “That includes for example the recent efforts in Arizona, which threaten to undermine basic notions of fairness that we cherish as Americans, as well as the trust between police and their communities that is so crucial to keeping us safe.”
His words may have come too late, just like his actions or lack thereof on immigration reform. Obama hit the nail on the head when he says it is the irresponsibility of the federal government that led to this and I dare say a general lack of real concern for the lives of immigrants, especially immigrant Latinos.
Gov. Brewer is expected to sign SB1070 any moment now after praying on it.

23 Apr 2010Ivy League Homegirl Sofia Quintero has published her first Young Adult (YA) novel and it is in stores now! Sofia is also my homegirl and I’ve read all her books including this one (excerpts from an interview we had forthcoming). EFRAIN’S SECRET is the story of Efrain, a Puerto Rican-Dominican high school senior living in the South Bronx and preparing for graduation from the Pedro Albizu Campos HS and seeking and Ivy League education. Here’s the book synopsis from the publisher’s website:
Ambitious high school senior Efrain Rodriguez dreams of escaping the South Bronx for an Ivy League college like Harvard or Yale. But how is his family going to afford to pay for a prestigious university when Moms has to work insane hours to put food on the table as it is? And Efrain wouldn’t dare ask that good-for-nothing father of his who has traded his family in for younger models. Left with few options, Efrain chooses to do something he never thought he would. He embarks on a double life—honor student by day, drug peddler at night—convinced that by temporarily capitulating to society’s negative expectations of a boy like him, he can eventually defy them.
Sofia Quintero makes a stunning debut writing for young adults with this gritty, complex, and real exploration of the life of an urban teen whose attempt to leave one world behind for a better one could cost him everything.

Three days ago Dr. Dorothy Height died. She has been called an “American Civil Rights Leader,” and although I have issues in general with people (mis)using the term “American” when they really just mean people living in the US, I believe the term was used correctly for Dr. Height.
Sometimes conversations about Civil Rights in the US may result in Latinos thinking the dialogue does not include us. The VL familia has addressed Civil Rights in various forms and hopefully you find this a space to interrogate and learn about how we DO and ARE a part of those conversations and have always been. From my LatiNegra perspective, and for many LatiNegr@s/Afr@-Latin@s/Afr@-Caribeñ@s/BlakTinos, Dr. Height’s work and legacy has directly impacted us. I too had the honor of meeting Dr. Height almost 5 years ago in Washington, DC at a National Council of Negro Women event where I staffed a table regarding cervical cancer with an organization I helped to create called Tamika & Friends, Inc.
I received an email from SisterSong on Tuesday April 21, 2010 that included: “Sisters Whose Shoulders We Stand On: A Tribute to Dr. Dorothy Height” by SisterSong National Coordinator, Loretta Ross. I’d like to share with you what Loretta Ross wrote below: Read more…

23 Apr 2010When all else fails laugh, verdad? Actually, I don’t know whether to laugh or cry at Steven Colbert’s takedown of SB1070 complete with stereotypical graphic. The ravioli joke really made me laugh though.

23 Apr 2010Word on the street is that Governor Brewer is expected to sign the racist and anti-immigrant bill SB1070 into law later this morning. According to amigo de VL, Manuél from Latino Politico, KTAR is reporting that Brewer will be holding a press conference at 10 am.
The signing of the bill into law is expected to bring negative economic consequences to the state of Arizona as well as continuation of the statewide protests.
