I recently reviewed a film called Orgasm, Inc.: The Strange Science Of Female Pleasure whic I reviewed for the site RH Reality Check. The topics discussed are ones that I believe need to be ocurring in as many spaces as possible, hence a semi-cross posting here at VL.
The film synopsis as listed on the website reads:
In the shocking and hilarious documentary ORGASM INC., filmmaker Liz Canner takes a job editing erotic videos for a drug trial for a pharmaceutical company. Her employer is developing what they hope will be the first Viagra drug for women that wins FDA approval to treat a new disease: Female Sexual Dysfunction (FSD). Liz gains permission to film the company for her own documentary. Initially, she plans to create a movie about science and pleasure but she soon begins to suspect that her employer, along with a cadre of other medical companies, might be trying to take advantage of women (and potentially endanger their health) in pursuit of billion dollar profits. ORGASM INC. is a powerful look inside the medical industry and the marketing campaigns that are literally and figuratively reshaping our everyday lives around health, illness, desire — and that ultimate moment: orgasm.

Remembering Amanda Gonzalez-Andujar : “She Wasn’t a Loner, She Wasn’t a Throwaway”

I did not know Amanda Gonzalez-Andujar in her life here, but after meeting and sharing space at a memorial and at a vigil this past Saturday with those who did know her, I felt the love, respect, and pride that her life was reflected back.
The memorial service was held at The Metropolitan Community Church in Midtown Manhattan, a Christian church who primarily ministers to the LGBT community nationwide. Organized by Amanda’s friend Elizabeth M. Rivera-Valentine, the memorial service and vigil were an answer to the transphobic portrayal that Gonzalez-Andujar received in the mainstream press after the 29 year old was found killed in her own apartment in Glendale, Queens. Rivera-Valentine, a health educator with Transcend in Boston, especially wanted to counter the notion that transgender members of our comunidades aren’t loved and don’t have families, actual and/or chosen that care about them and will fight for them. Rivera-Valentine shared how she met Amanda and how struck she was at seeing how supportive Amanda’s family was during her transition and how supportive her community was. Rivera-Valentine then shared a poem about how her own feminine spirit continued to beat the odds and the hate.

Representative says the federal government should deport U.S.-born children of undocumented immigrants

28 Apr 2010Just found this link on facebook. How much more hateful and disheartening can this whole “debate” possibly be?
Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Alpine) says the federal government should deport U.S.-born children of undocumented immigrants.
“Would you support deportation of natural-born American citizens that are the children of illegal aliens,” Hunter was asked. “I would have to, yes,” Hunter said. “… We simply cannot afford what we’re doing right now,” he said. “… It takes more than just walking across the border to become an American citizen. It’s what’s in our souls. …”Hunter made his comments at a “tea party” rally in the San Diego County city of Ramona over the weekend. You can see a video of his remarks below.
Local Sherrif calls SB1070 a “racist law.”

28 Apr 2010Resistance to the SB 1070 law is coming fast and furious from many different areas–but this particular article was what I’d most been hoping to see. Local people resisting locally.
Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik tells KGUN9 News that SB 1070, Arizona’s crackdown on illegal immigration, is a “racist law,” and says he has no intention of complying with it. In doing so, Dupnik becomes the first major local law enforcement official to officially rebel against the bill since Governor Jan Brewer signed it into law on Friday.
Dupnik told KGUN9′s Steve Nunez that the law is “disgusting” and “unnecessary.” Dupnik said his deputies plan to keep on doing what they’ve always done. He said when illegal immigrants wind up in his custody, his deputies will detain them for federal agents, but will not take them to the county jail.
Dupnik said he realizes that, under the terms of SB 1070, he could get sued for failing to comply with the law. But he indicated that’s a risk he’s willing to take. Dupnik insisted that federal law supersedes state law.
For those of us who don’t have the resources to participate in the various boycotts of Arizona, supporting local people like this man is a great alternative. You just know that Dupnik is getting hell from all sides right now–participating in polls and doing call in’s/sending emails showing support would probably be greatly appreciated at the moment!
Napolitano Releases a Statement on SB1070 and Promises More Military Drones on the Frontera

28 Apr 2010The Secretary of Homeland Security and former Governor of Arizona, Janet Napolitano, released a statement on SB1070. The statement read:
“The Arizona immigration law will likely hinder federal law enforcement from carrying out its priorities of detaining and removing dangerous criminal aliens. With the strong support of state and local law enforcement, I vetoed several similar pieces of legislation as Governor of Arizona because they would have diverted critical law enforcement resources from the most serious threats to public safety and undermined the vital trust between local jurisdictions and the communities they serve. I support and am actively working with bipartisan members of Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform at the federal level because this issue cannot be solved by a patchwork of inconsistent state laws.”
In some way it’s good that she spoke out against the measure, especially coming against the woman that followed her in running the state of Arizona. I am also sure that Napolitano’s calling for comprehensive immigration reform is something that the advocates can and should jump on. However, it seems that Napolitano is being a little untruthful about the role I.C.E has already been playing with 287(g) and other immigration enforcement measures that claim to be out looking for “dangerous” immigrants.
