When all else fails laugh, verdad? Actually, I don’t know whether to laugh or cry at Steven Colbert’s takedown of SB1070 complete with stereotypical graphic. The ravioli joke really made me laugh though.

Oh man, that was a MUCH needed laugh, (the “ninja” comment especially got me for some reason.)

This bill has me so angry. I can’t believe President Obama hasn’t said a word about it. I feel sad for those living in Arizona who will be affected, but the state of Arizona itself will DESERVE the financial collapse that is sure to come of this. Part of me wants to see them go down so they can be a shining example of failure to other states even considering such Draconian, un-American laws. Our country needs immigrants and it’s about time everyone realized it.

Have you seen what other nonsense Arizona is up to? I just saw on the AP that they are “pushing a bill through the Legislature that would require the president to show his birth certificate to get on the state’s 2012 ballot.” … Has Arizona always been so racist and ignorant or are they just on a roll lately?

Sra. López,

What makes requiring a candidate to prove a constitutionally required qualifier, racist?

Did anybody here bother to read the bill?

Purpose: Requires a reasonable attempt to be made to determine the immigration status of a person during any legitimate contact made by an official or agency of the state or a county, city, town or political subdivision (political subdivision) if reasonable suspicion exists that the person is an alien who is unlawfully present in the U.S.

http://www.azleg.gov/legtext/49leg/2r/summary/s.1070pshs.doc.htm

The 4th amendment still applies. (That is the one about unreasonable search and seizure).

Avatar

What is legitimate contact, Carlitos? Is it, perhaps, stopping to talk to an individual on the street? If so, 4th amendment may be violated often because officers will not have the requisite reasonable suspicion to inquire into individuals’ status.

A distinction from 287g is helpful. the latter program requires that ICE train local officers on immigration matters. With SB1070, it’s likely that the majority of police officers will not be trained by ICE and thus will inevitably violate the 4th amendment rights of Arizonians both undocumented and not.(not that they do not already, just less).

Arizona is already throwing American citizens in jail for driving without a birth certificate:

I can’t wait for someone to pull me over for the color of my skin so I can show him a thing or two about my rights as a natural born us citizen. It is incredibly moronic that this “law” was passed. I read that ACLU and MALDEF are going to sue to prevent it from taking effect based on the fact that its a Federal responsibility not the state’s responsibility. They don’t realize how much we all affect the economy and how little white people want to do the jobs we do with so much ease. I used to be proud to live in Arizona but now I am ashamed and will look into moving if this state goes down to the level of the confederate states during slavery.

This is really disheartening to know that this bill has passed. I think we should be proud of who we are! I refuse to assemulate! I don’t want to have blonde hair and blue eyes…and talk like i’m from the valley!

On my facebook I received a message from a fellow chicana saying something like” I don’t care how many times I have to be pulled over..I want these illegals out of here!”

I say to this Soldiers have died and are still dying so that YOU DON”T have to be harressed and stopped for the color of your skin!! I refuse to give up my rights as a chicano!

About my brothers who are immigrants I am your voice you were wlecomed during the census and your numbers counted…and now all of a sudden the state wants you out? Those 500 people who were fired at the Rancho Market those were 500 people who paid their mortgage, rent, paid taxes, sales taxes, who have kids in public schools! We need them . Are you willing to pay $5.00 for a head of lettuce, becuase ultimately this is the direct result of paying an “Honest Wage” to an American citizen.

We knew we were paying them pennies on the dollar to do the hard labor, Americans refused to do..and we didn’t care for them or their families. Now Gov Brewer and all those Republicans want them gone?!!!!!

How can Govener Brewer say she is doing what’s right for our economy when it’s only going to plummit. We will see more home loses..higher prices for grocerys.

Obama is also to blame..he can comment during a presidential speech on Tiger Woods infedality, but can’t comment on something as BIG as this? Where are YOU…I voted you in!

I pray that I get pulled over for “racial profiling” so I can along with many sue the state…A class action lawsuit! It is illegal to arrest someone based on their race!

The Opposition can sue as well for officers not doing their job and going to well known hispanic hang outs.

Arizona dug herself in this hole..You will be sued either way..if you arrest someone who has been racially profiled and sued for not arresting the hispanics.

How CAN YOU DETERMINE…not BY MY ACTIONS BUT BY MY BEING?!

Arizona has become a racist state…”Reasonable suspicion” will there be a color chart? Much like Hitler used to single out the jews..to burn them alive? That’s exactly how police officers will harrass YOU…yes YOU..I don’t if you’re black, hispanic, asian (ALL minorities) will be harassed.

Make a stand for your rights! Educate yourself, if your not already..GET INVOLVED! This is nothing short than the fight MLK did in the 60s..

America spent countless dollars to re-build homes in Haiti…What ABOUT THE HOMES YOUR BREAKING IN OUR BACK YARDS???

We need to make a stand this is a call to YOU…your rights are on the line!!!!!

To Arizonans: Give SB1070 a chance to work its self out, it’s about time some had the guts to do something about immigration, unlike our previous Arizona Governor.

To Non-Arizonans: SHUT UP! if you’ve never been victimized by an illegal immigrant you have no idea what we are going through.

To President Obama: HELP! Get out of your office, from behind your teleprompter and do something positive for our country and Arizona, campaigning for President is over, you have the job, do something.

To Doug: if you are embarrassed of Arizona move your family out. There is nothing embarrassing about Arizona. Before anyone starts to yell out stereotype, racial profiling, talk to someone who has been victimized by an Illegal Immigrant than you will understand how we fill. I have a family I have to protect, and I can’t as long as “Illegal Immigrants” continue to violate my rights. So stop you’re whining and let the Arizona Governor do her job. If you think “Illegal Immigrants” have more civil rights than you, you do need to move out of Arizona. I’m Hispanic, and my family came to America/Arizona through the system and it worked. Why would we let Illegal Immigrants walk up to a DES counter and get free Federal benefits, just because we are afraid already to ask for ID’s?

The worst thing to do at this point is “knee jerk” reaction; don’t do something you are going to regret. Let the law unfold, move and evolve. What we have to realize is “we” are the government. Let the Law Enforcement Agencies do their job, and be proud of who you are.

Its not hard to find a job if you have the right attitude and work hard unlike many who take their job for granted as I have seen from people I work with. I never said Hispanics are the only ones that support the Arizona economy I simply said that they make up $29 Billion of it which is a hit if that money is gone. It actually sound to me like you should talk to DES yourself and cry to them because they make the decision of who to help.

I don’t think you want a world like that, amigo. :)

@Jeffry I don’t understand what an unconstitutional law has to do with drug dealers. You do know the CIA is involved in drug dealing, right? And that the US military is the biggest group of gangbangers there are. Sounds to me it’s not the shape that bothers you but the color of the shape.

Nezua, and Diego Montalvo
I’m glad we had this little discussion; I will give you the benefit of the doubt since we don’t know one and other. I don’t expect you to understand the level of emotions that run high in my life when you’ve had to face over 20 illegal immigrants who just burglarized your home, having Border Patrol raid your place with 10 agents and K-9 while you’re sleeping, because you were suspected of harboring illegals. You wouldn’t understand the sound of illegal immigrants running through your property even after that that incident, and the paranoia of it happening over and over again, you would not understand this, but hey you can sleep at night. I speak only on my part, but if others around me would speak up, they would say they are tired of having their home being overrun by illegal immigrants who hide in their garage, trees and even in their vehicle at night just to escape the Border Patrol who patrol our area. No, if you’re not use to it you wouldn’t understand living a few blocks from the Mexican Border and having to hear the helicopters all day. Our town is under siege because of the illegal immigrants. Just 56 miles from where I live a whole family was killed when a coyote transporting 20 illegal immigrants ran an intersection killing the family, one of them whom was a friend of mine, no you wouldn’t understand that, but hey you sleep at night. Or maybe you don’t understand just how personal this is when an illegal immigrant ran a stop sign T-boning my sister’s car sending her to the hospital and totaling her car, oh and the immigrant had no vehicle insurance, but hey you sleep at night. This kind of shit goes on and on and as for me I’m tired of it. I don’t mind helping others, certainly immigrants as I do buy the food they sell when they go door to door selling it to make a living. What I am tired of is illegal immigrants steeling from us. I mentioned how they take advantage of “our” system by purchasing a PO Box just to get DES benefits, how does that make you feel? I really hope you answer this one. Two years ago a group of 40 illegal’s were found in a house just one block from my family’s home, they were carrying marijuana, heroin and one was carrying a weapon, how does that make you feel? But to allow thousands, millions to cross the border illegally and take what we have worked all our lives for is something to stand up for and against. Just as you will stand against your fellow Americans, with strangers and say it’s okay to commit a crime; we supporters of SB1070 will stand against you no matter who you are and tell you it’s a fraud when you walk into DES with a PO box number and are able to get all the benefits you need? As a supporter against SB1070 how does that make you feel?
I am Hispanic/Native American went to school and obtained my education from the University of Arizona, and I know what my family went through to get citizenship and get this far. I don’t see my life hitting any calmness soon, as this issue has taken a whole new level, and we are now in the center of. Human rights, civil rights; what about our right is what we are asking; something our own government has a problem in answering. As for immigrants, really, I have no issues with any immigrants coming into our country, but if they want to be a citizen, they need to follow the same steps as anyone else wanting to join America, and amnesty is not the answer.

ILV Ariz:

Sure, I understand the depth of feeling that arises from a personal experience. But when we begin fighting and advocating for national policies? It is incumbent upon us to take a less personalized view and look at the entire situation. Like the effects of the USA’s neoliberalism and perhaps at human nature which says that addressing social ills with punitive measures is a sure recipe for further violence and failure.

I don’t (I may as well cue you in) take anyone seriously who uses words like “amnesty” when discussing immigration. It is a weighted term that attempts to convey morality and derision upon legalities.

Avatar

Maegan La Mala

April 29th, 2010 at 6:45 am

Well I also think it when people use personal experience as their reason for opposing or supporting SB1070, it begs the question, whose personal experience is given more value in this country in the context of the whole wider debate? Certainly not the immigrants whose reasons for coming to the United States is painted in such a one dimensional way with little analysis to the root causes.

Okay Maegan La Mala, nezua, Diego Montalvo, Bryan J. abel Garcia, shut up or move out of Arizona….

Just a few days ago, a major drug ring was broken up and 39 Mexican cartel operatives suspected of running 40,000 pounds of marijuana through southern Arizona were indicted. This is merely the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Arizona’s drug trafficking and border violence problem.

Narcotics prosecutions in Arizona have risen 202% in 16 months, however, according to the Transactional Records Access Clearing House, there will be 1,080 prosecutions refused this year in Tucson alone. This represents over one-third of all unprosecuted cases in the Southwest. Until January of 2009, any smugglers carrying under the threshold of 500 pounds were often not prosecuted – a fact that smugglers knew all too well!

When she served as Governor of Arizona, Janet Napolitano sent countless requests to Washington to take action in securing our border. Now, as Secretary of Homeland Security, she claims that the border is “as secure now as it has ever been.” That’s the problem. Our border wasn’t secure when she was governor and it’s not secure now. We’re not buying that “the system worked.” By turning a blind eye, Secretary Napolitano is betraying us in her home state. Napolitano personifies what happens when people go to Washington. Sometimes, they forget who they represent.

As the rhetoric on illegal immigration continues to grow out of control, it’s more important than ever to share the facts on Arizona’s new law. The reality is that Arizona’s new law mirrors federal law, which the federal government is not enforcing. George Will put it in perspective; the federal government’s refusal to control the border is what has caused this problem in the first place

Gov. Brewer ‘outraged’ by shooting of deputy
Posted: May 01, 2010 3:12 PM MST
Updated: May 01, 2010 3:12 PM MST
Reporter: Sheryl Kornman

PHOENIX – (KGUN-TV) – Gov. Jan Brewer said she is “outraged” by the shooting on Friday of a Pinal County sheriff’s deputy.

Her statement was released Friday, before three suspects in the incident were taken into custody for questioning. She said her prayers are with the deputy.

“I am outraged by this attack against this deputy and the people of Arizona that he is sworn to protect. Although there is no confirmation at this time that the criminals involved in this evening’s violence are drug smugglers, this incident occurred in a known drug trafficking corridor…”

The governor said “drug smugglers and cartel members invading our state are not innocent fathers and mothers longing for a better life for their family.”

“Arizona is now confronted by some of the most vicious and dangerous narco-terror organizations the world has seen,” she said.

“Their cause is not honest labor in desperate need of sustenance; it is murder, terror and mayhem in furtherance of a multi-billion dollar criminal enterprise.”

She said the federal government “refuses to fulfill its responsibility to secure our border.”

@I LV Arizona

“As the rhetoric on illegal immigration continues to grow out of control, it’s more important than ever to share the facts on Arizona’s new law.”

It would appear that you are engaging on the flipside of rhetoric. You are only sharing SB1070′s proponents’ “facts”, as you write:

“the reality is that Arizona’s new law mirrors federal law, which the federal government is not enforcing. George Will put it in perspective; the federal government’s refusal to control the border is what has caused this problem in the first place”

Just because it “mirrors” the “federal” law does not mean that SB1070 will not be struck down on pre-emption grounds. Ironically, many SB1070 proponents are arguing that it is necessary because the Federal government has not done its job. That is true to an extent, but it fails miserably in its narrowness. In case you did not know, the brain behind SB1070 is the Federation for American Immigration Reform(FAIR). The latter group is as culpable, probably one of the most culpable, groups that have grinded any sort of reasonable immigration reform to a halt.

FAIR will absolutely not consider any type of legalization for current undocumented, not even if the border was sealed up and no further illegal immigration occurs. Worse, FAIR wants to significantly cut down on the current levels if LEGAL immigration. FAIR is obdurate; this stance only exacerbates the dilemma of illegal immigration by holding to its stance with absolutely no willingness to face reality.

As a current law student to a future one, you should never tell someone to “shut up” if your goal is to persuade them.

The way to deal with folks like “LV Arizona” is to ignore them, let them practice on lab mice, we have other things to use our time for. Such as the very good, well thought out suggestions posted here by others as to our community’s next steps.

I was really impressed yesterday at the 3000+ marchers in my city of Fresno CA, how when we ran into like 5 tea party protesters, everyone was pretty consistently saying “ignore them, we have a march to finish”. And that’s what I call staying on point and not getting thrown off by pebbles in the road.
