30 Apr 2010Arizona legislators are on a roll with showing how much they hate everything non-white and showing the depths of illogical hate with the passing of HB 2281.
Via Latino Politico & AZ Daily Star
HB 2281 would make it illegal for a school district to have any courses or classes that promote the overthrow of the U.S. government, are designed primarily for students of a particular ethnic group or advocate ethnic solidarity “instead of the treatment of pupils as individuals.”
It also would ban classes that “promote resentment toward a race or class of people.”
Of course this law only makes sense in the context of growing anti-Latino hate. Surely there will be no attempts to ban the teaching of the supremacy of the Europeans who came to what is now Arizona in order to “civilize” it. Certainly no one will object to the calls for people to organize against brown people or those with last names that end in z’s or make you roll your r’s. This law in itself is an example of resentment against a growing class of people : Latinos.
Sen. Linda Lopez, D-Tucson, said the legislation is little more than a thinly disguised effort to quash a program TUSD officials have said was proven academically successful.
According to TUSD officials, the program in the district’s Mexican-American studies department simply provides historical information, which conflicts with state School Superintendent Tom Horne’s assessment the program is promoting racial hatred and “ethnic chauvinism.”
Boycott Arizona! Start people’s schools that teach the real history of our people and struggle to our children and our community! These laws are only making the solidarity among Latinos stronger.

30 Apr 2010The immigration reform proposal presented yesterday by Senators Schumer, Menendez, and Reid should be seen as an insult to the hard work that activists and advocates have been engaged in. Calling for a militarized border before millions are granted their basic human rights is not justice and it sure as hell ain’t change. If this is the proposal meant to bring Republicans to the table, how much worse will it get?
In the absence of a REAL immigration reform bill, students have been marching, walking across the country, risking deportation and coming out of the often referred to shadows to demand that they be able to stay in this country.
The Center for American Progress (whom I am mad at for their support of the Dem. immigration proposal), has a great podcast in Spanish with the DREAM walkers.

30 Apr 2010May Day was the deadline that many immigration advocates put out there as the deadline for a comprehensive immigration reform bill to be put on the table. The 26 page Democratic proposal released yesterday should be an unacceptable option for justice loving people and there are marches and events planned all over the country (and all over the world- May Day is an international holiday after all).
Here in NY, I am hosting my own May Day eve vigil in solidarity con la comunidad de Arizona and against SB1070.
Corona Plaza, Queens NYC

On Saturday I’ll be bouncing between the Union Square, NYC rally and the one at Foley Plaza, both scheduled to jump off at noon.
Reform Immigration For America has a listing of marches and rallies being held across the country. To find one near you visit them here.
See you at the marchas!

29 Apr 2010Last summer Mala shared with us a trailer for the film 9500 Liberty about Virginia’s Prince William County’s Anti-Immigration legislation acts that she saw at Netroots (which she is also seeking to attend this year so go vote for her to get a scholarship to attend!). She wrote:
On Day 2, I decided to make a more concerted effort to attend panels and events related to immigration and to meet up with some of the other immigrant blogger scholarship winners. After some morning blogging, it was to a lunch time screening of 9500 Liberty.
The independently made documentary by Annabel Park and Eric Byler takes the audience through Virginia’s Prince William County’s anti-immigrant and anti-Latino legislative actions and the protests against them. I thought it was really important for people to see how local initiatives across the country help add to the wider anti-immigrant rhetoric. It was also interesting to see how in progressive spaces, lip service can be paid to bloggers of color, specifically Latinos, while the hustle and dance is all about self-promotion and marketing.
Earlier this week my homegirl Elena, who lives in Surprise, Arizona, sent me an email announcing the premire of the film in Tempe, Avondale, and Scotsdale, AZ this week. Below is the screening information as it hits theaters tomorrow, Friday:

29 Apr 2010As an independent media maker I know how hard it is to stay afloat. We do this out of love, out of necessity. Here at VL we struggle to stay online, pay to keep our servers, and give a little some
thing to our editors. Going to events, even when on someone else’s generous dime, still require us to pay out of pocket expenses like food.
Some of our friends in the blogosphere are asking for specific help to keep doing what they do. If you can help please do.
Where would la Mala be without BrownFemiPower aka BFP. She’s always been an inspiration, a model as I was coming up in the blog mundo and continues to be. Hermana needs a computer porque well how the hell do you expect her to drop knowledge and beauty the way she does on Flip Flopping Joy without a computer?
Can you help this amazing radical Chicana mujer get a new computer and continue to spread her truth?
Another VL amigo, Nezua from the Unapologetic Mexican, is auctioning some art to help raise some funds. Nez and VL have faced some of the same challenges as we write on immigration and other issues of comunidad, so I want him to stay online and causing trouble.

29 Apr 2010Word from some people in DC is that in the absence of a bi-partisan comprehensive immigration reform bill from NY Senator biometric Chuck Schumer and Lindsey Graham, some Democrats may move forward presenting a proposal of their own. This is being done to placate the immigration reform advocates who have been criticizing the lack of real, good faith action on the part of federal lawmakers and by the looks of what I have seen from the proposal ,also to placate and attract Republicans and others who are so fixated on the enforcement agenda that has been dominating current immigration policy and practice in the U.S.
Before I get into the nuts and bolts of what is in the proposal. My Democratic D.C. sources have confirmed that indeed there is a Democrat only written proposal on the table for the purpose of engaging Republicans who have demanded to see something on paper and the purpose of the proposal is to move the CIR debate forward.
The alleged proposal calls for enforcement efforts along the U.S./Mexico border (cuz no one is really talking about Canadians) and throughout the country to be beefed up before the human rights of the millions of undocumented are even to be looked at.
Among the alleged enforcement proposals are increasing the number of I.C.E agents, increasing the number of border patrol officers, increasing the number of I.C.E workplace inspectors and resources (read increase the number of workplace raids), increasing border security tech along the border, and increasing the number of immigration courts NOT to ensure equal protection under the law or the due process of immigrants but rather to expedite deportations, which we already know are at record numbers under Obama.
If this is the legislative starting point that everyone has been demanding and that advocates will accept with marches and “si se puedes” then count me out of “that” movement.

29 Apr 2010For those waiting to find out about a legal challenge to SB1070, looks like there will be announcement about the next steps to make that happen later today in Phoenix.
Civil Rights Leaders Dolores Huerta And Richard Chavez Joined By Famed Musician And Arizona Native Linda Ronstadt To Condemn New Law
PHOENIX – On Thursday, April 29, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. (MST), MALDEF, the American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU of Arizona and the National Immigration Law Center (NILC) will hold a news conference on the steps of the State Capitol Executive Tower in Phoenix, Arizona to announce that they are preparing to challenge Arizona’s extreme new law, which requires law enforcement to question people about their immigration status during everyday police encounters and criminalizes immigrants for failing to carry their “papers.” The unconstitutional law, the groups say, encourages racial profiling, endangers public safety and betrays American values.
Speakers will include Thomas A. Saenz, MALDEF President and General Counsel; Alessandra Soler Meetze, Executive Director of the ACLU of Arizona; Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the United Farm Workers of America; Richard Chavez, civil rights leader; and Linda Ronstadt, multi-Grammy winning artist and human rights advocate.
Fifteen years ago, MALDEF, ACLU and NILC successfully challenged Proposition 187 in the state of California, where a voter-approved initiative required proof of legal status to access virtually all public services. The enactment of Prop 187, as it was commonly referred to, tore apart schools and communities across the state as fear and suspicion became pervasive, and the state wasted tens of millions of dollars defending a law ultimately struck down as unconstitutional.
One of the lessons I learned from my mentor Richie Perez (RIP) is that struggle must happen on multiple fronts : in the media, on the streets, and in the courts. I look forward to hearing about this arm of the batalla.

28 Apr 2010I recently reviewed a film called Orgasm, Inc.: The Strange Science Of Female Pleasure whic I reviewed for the site RH Reality Check. The topics discussed are ones that I believe need to be ocurring in as many spaces as possible, hence a semi-cross posting here at VL.
The film synopsis as listed on the website reads:
In the shocking and hilarious documentary ORGASM INC., filmmaker Liz Canner takes a job editing erotic videos for a drug trial for a pharmaceutical company. Her employer is developing what they hope will be the first Viagra drug for women that wins FDA approval to treat a new disease: Female Sexual Dysfunction (FSD). Liz gains permission to film the company for her own documentary. Initially, she plans to create a movie about science and pleasure but she soon begins to suspect that her employer, along with a cadre of other medical companies, might be trying to take advantage of women (and potentially endanger their health) in pursuit of billion dollar profits. ORGASM INC. is a powerful look inside the medical industry and the marketing campaigns that are literally and figuratively reshaping our everyday lives around health, illness, desire — and that ultimate moment: orgasm.
