#LGBTCIR = Coalition Fail?

February 28th, 2010

I spent Saturday afternoon at a briefing for LGBT bloggers, editors and reporters at the Desmond Tutu Center, organized by the LGBT Subcommittee of the Four Freedoms Fund. I should note that VivirLatino wasn’t originally invited to the event, but I attended upon hearing about it from Prerna Lal of DREAMActivist and Change.org. I went to the event having already paticipating in conversations about the intersections of the movements at the NOI Summit last summer and Netroots Nation. You all remember how well that went, right?

The LGBTCIR conversation wasn’t any different. First I should say that I missed the entire morning part of the session because I was mami’ing, working, and trying to get information on multiple families in Chile. I know that I missed a wonderful presentation from The Trail of DREAMs that inspired everyone. From Change.org:

The high point of the blogger summit was still the DREAM Act-eligible students who are walking the Trail of DREAMs from Florida to Washington, D.C. — a project of Florida Immigrant Rights Coalition, Students Working for Equal Rights, Presente, and DreamActivist. Two of the walkers who happen to be queer immigrants and in a relationship with each other — Juan Rodriguez (20) and Felipe Matos (23) — called in from Atlanta, Georgia, to discuss the ways in which the broken immigration system fails them.

Juan is documented while Felipe is undocumented. Their only legal recourse to stay together is either passage of the DREAM Act or the Uniting American Families Act, since immigration law will not recognize their partnership. Their bravery and willingness to not only speak out, but risk detention and their lives, by walking hundreds of miles through Klan-country was awe-inspiring.

Chile After the Earthquake : Realities and the Media Distortion

February 28th, 2010

On the morning of Saturday February 27th, Chile was hit with an 8.8 earthquake, with the epicenter close to the city on Concepción, which is southwest of the capital city of Santiago. The death toll has been rising steadily and currently 708 and expected to keep rising as more rubble is cleared. There have been over 60 aftershocks, the strongest so far at 6.9. Officially over 2 million people have been displaced. Communication in and out of the country has been spotty with many still waiting to hear about the status of their loved ones.

New Latin American Regional Org Says “Vete al Carajo” to U.S.

February 26th, 2010

In 2007 it was “porque no te callas”, now it’s “vete al carajo”. At the Rio Summit earlier this week, Colombian President Alvaro Uribe and Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez shared a few choice words of love and respect.

From the New Yorker

President Álvaro Uribe of Colombia, who seems to equate masculinity with an archaic code of honor, uttered the phrase, which translates as “Act like a man!” with studly connotations of challenge and defiance attached. His neighbor, Hugo Chávez of Venezuela, shouted back in his standard street-fighter mode, “¡Vete al carajo!”—or, roughly, “Go fuck yourself.”

And really that’s all par for the course between those two, but the bigger “vete pal carajo” went to the U.S. and Canada who were excluded when Latin America leaders decided to form a regional organisation that will unite the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean but that will not involve either the United States or Canada.

Open Petition Appealing to All Americans Who Care About Women, Children and Families Hurt By Domestic Violence

February 26th, 2010

This from VL amiga Angeline Hassell:

Hello All,

There is a growing epidemic that is spreading at unexpected speeds……Domestic Violence! The people who are most affected by this are women and children.

I myself for one happen to be a woman and I happen to also be a victim of domestic violence which is why I started this petition.

Whether or not you have ever been involved in domestic violence, I am asking for your help in calling public attention to the needs of women, children and families that have been hurt by this heinous act that all too many times gets ignored once they enter the court system.

Please , sign this petition today

I am calling on individuals who oppose this heinous act to please sign the petition which is calling for New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg to hold the Judges, Law Guardians and abusers accountable for their actions. Yes domestic violence is a big issue, but if we are steadfast in making our complaints known and voices heard then they cannot continue to ignore us. I am appealing to women and yes the honorable men who absolutely oppose violent acts committed against women and children to please sign the petition. Men you have mothers, daughter’s, sisters and nieces. You would not condone this sort of behavior against the female members of your family so please help us to speak out against this and sign the petition.

All too many times Domestic Violence cost’s mother’s their children and their happiness and in extreme cases their lives.

1 in 4 women are victims of domestic violence
Bureau of Justice Statistics (Intimate Partner Violence) states that more than three women are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends every day.
More and more women are losing custody of their children to their abusers/batterers.
Most people believe that if its not in their household that domestic violence does not affect them but this is untrue.

HELP BREAK THE SILENCE!

Please, please sign the attached petition

Your support is needed whether or not you have been a victim of domestic violence.

Your signature is simply a sign that you care.

VL At The Cine: Cop Out

February 25th, 2010

The good thing about the film Cop Out is that the term “coonfest” does not completely describe this film. The bad thing is everything else. I admit when I first saw the trailers for the film I said to myself “…but I’ve seen the 48 Hours films already.” Unfortunately, Kevin Smith (Clerks, Dogma) did not have a lot to work with regarding the script brothers Robb and Mark Cullen (Heist) wrote and gave him.

The story is about two police officers in California who have been together for nine years. Jimmy Monroe performed by Bruce Willis (Die Hard) and Paul Hodges performed by Tracy Morgan (30 Rock, First Sunday) have formed a “unique” way of attempting to solve crimes. Yet, their crime-fighting capabilities lead them to a 30-day suspension. While Jimmy worries about how to pay for his daughter, Ava’s (Michelle Trachtenberg) wedding, Paul is preoccupied with the possibility that his wife, Debbie, performed by Rashida Jones (I Love You, Man) may be having an affair with the neighbor. Instead of agreeing to have Ava’s stepfather Roy, performed by Jason Lee (My Name Is Earl), pay for the wedding, Jimmy chooses to sell a baseball card he’s had since his childhood. Upon attempting to sell his card the store is held up, his card stolen, and he convinces Paul to search for the missing card with him. This search leads them to a drug cartel run by (who else?) a Mexican crew led by Poh Boy performed by a very tired looking Guillermo Díaz (Weeds).

The New Way to Make Money Off of Immigrants : Car Checkpoints

February 25th, 2010

NYC isn’t a huge driving city, at least not for too many locals with access to public transportation but in other parts of the country, especially in California where driving is not just a way of life, but a way to access opportunities for work, sobriety checkpoints may be used less to protect people from drunk drivers and more as a way to generate revenue, especially when the check points are set up in immigrant communities where driving without a license is a necessity in order to survive.

The Investigative Reporting Program reviewed hundreds of pages of city financial records and police reports, and analyzed data from sobriety checkpoints during the past two years. The data revealed that police departments across the state are seizing a growing number of vehicles from unlicensed drivers. In the last fiscal year, the police seized approximately 24,000 such cars at sobriety checkpoints, up from 17,900 in 2008 and 15,700 in 2007.

Law enforcement officials say demographics play no role in determining where the police establish checkpoints. But records show that cities where Hispanics make up a majority of the population are seizing cars at three times the rate of cities with small minority populations.

This Can’t Be Good, Right? Speedy Gonzalez, the Movie.

February 25th, 2010

Speedy Gonzalez and George LopezCan I get an “ay caramba!”?
Warner Brothers, historically known for their accurate and nuanced portrayal of people of color communities, is fast tracking a Speedy Gonzales live-action/CG hybrid feature, with George Lopez as the voice of the Mexican mouse.

Speedy, who comes with a history of stereotypical portrayals of Mexico and Mexicans, is supposedly redeemed by Lopez who is reclaiming the ratoncito and trying to make a hero out of him. Is such a thing even possible? Can one of the most famous Latinos in Hollywood now take a figure who has been used to malign an entire community/country be rebranded? Should this even happen? Or does doing this take away, erase the very reason a character like Speedy was created?

“We wanted to make sure that it was not the Speedy of the 1950s — the racist Speedy,” Ann Lopez [George's wife] said with a chuckle. “Speedy’s going to be a misunderstood boy who comes from a family that works in a very meticulous setting, and he’s a little too fast for what they do. He makes a mess of that. So he has to go out in the world to find what he’s good at.”

Good News for Cirila Baltazar Cruz and Her Daughter

February 25th, 2010

I love good news, especially when I hear about it from our amazing readers/amig@s. Last night Katie let us know that Cirila Baltazar Cruz, the Indigenous Mexican mujer who had her child taken away from her because of a mix of racist and sexist anti-immigrant actions in the name of the state of Mississippi, has been reunited with her hijita, Ruby.

There has been a cloak of secrecy surrounding this case which has made it nearly impossible to get any information or perspective directly from the people involved but according to an article I found on The Native American Times, Cirila and Ruby are headed back to Oaxaca.

Shakira for Immigration “Reform”!

February 24th, 2010

Shakira has already taught us that English only is not a good thing (especially when it comes to her music) and now she’s expanding her political scope by coming out in favor of immigration “reform”.

From America’s Voice :

Colombian pop superstar Shakira (Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll) is the latest public figure to call on President Obama to pass comprehensive immigration reform legislation with a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants.

She was even named “immigrant of the day”, although I’m not sure what that means.

What I do know is this, star power often is paid more attention to in the mainstream media and sometimes even in our own communities. Maybe having a celeb spokesperson for immigration “reform” would help bring more people out. Maybe Shakira should do a concert for immigrants in conjunction with the big march scheduled for March.

I just hope she doesn’t sing in English or howl like a wolf.

Miscarriage: The New Crime

February 24th, 2010

Utah is working to implement a cleaver new law that will make it a criminal offense for women to miscarry a pregnancy.

The bill responds to a case in which a Vernal woman allegedly paid a man $150 to beat her and cause miscarriage but could not be charged. The Senate on Thursday approved HB12 on a vote of 24-4, criminalizing a woman’s “intentional, knowing, or reckless act” leading to a pregnancy’s illegal termination. It specifies that a woman cannot be prosecuted for arranging a legal abortion.

The measure now goes to Gov. Gary Herbert for final action.

Some Senate Democrats attempted a last-minute amendment to remove the word “reckless” from the list of criminal acts leading to miscarriage. They argued that criminalizing reckless acts leaves open the possibility of prosecutions against domestic violence victims who return to their abusers only to be beaten and lose the child.

“It’s part of the cycle of domestic violence,” said Sen. Luz Robles, D-Salt Lake City.

“I hope none of you ever have to face that situation,” she said after realizing the majority would pass the bill as is, “or have a daughter facing that situation, or a granddaughter.”

But the bill’s sponsor, Sen. Margaret Dayton, R-Orem, said the bill doesn’t target victims at all — only those who arrange to terminate their pregnancies illegally.

Now, let’s be clear here, of course this legislation is about ending or severely restricting a woman’s right to abortion. Of course this legislation is about controlling and even hating women (rather than opening up more choices for women’s reproductive health, let’s just make it illegal for them to be desperate!). And of course, the life of a fetus is far more important to many people making laws than the woman’s life is.

But along with the women hating anti-choice violence this law is enacting on women in Utah, this law (which looks as if it is going to pass) *also* has the (perhaps) unintended consequence of particularly targeting poor women of color–and even more pointedly, undocumented women.

Remember that undocumented women are not allowed medicaid or medicare–and even if they were, most states prevent women from using state funds to get abortions. Under the new health legislation being proposed, it would be illegal for undocumented immigrants to even *buy* their own health insurance (much less get it for free or at a reduced cost from the government), and again, even if they did, abortion coverage (even if women want to buy their own) is being written out of the legislation.

So, after making it near impossible and mostly illegal for undocumented (and even documented) women to buy their own health insurance that covers abortions, after making it impossible to get free or reduced cost health insurance that covers abortions–the state of Utah feels it’s important to then criminalize women who don’t have “legal” abortions.

But…what is a “legal” abortion? Is getting advice on what herbs to take from a midwife “legal?” Is taking various medications that many Latinas can get from Mexico and other Latin American countries “legal?” Is a coat hanger “legal?”

Because there seems to be no definition of what equates “legal” written into this legislation, that means any woman anywhere who for whatever reason miscarries–will be subject to criminal charges. And lest you think that prosecutors have ever shown restraint when it comes to pressing criminal charges against women who are making their own *often times very LEGAL* choices about their bodies, please, surf around the National Advocates for Pregnant Women website for a while. This organization of lawyers that defend pregnant women from criminal prosecution, has worked to defend women who have done such things as being pregnant and addicted to various drugs to refusing c-sections to being “uppity” in the birthing room.

It is not a “safe” thing to be a woman who is pregnant. And unfortunately, rather than feeling compassion for a woman who would willingly be beaten so that she doesn’t have a child (and maybe increasing funding for free reproductive health care options), we hate that woman, and do what we can to punish all women who would dare to be as desperate as she was.
