A New Year Without Her Daughter: Update on Angelina Hassel Case

Some of the most heartbreaking stories I came across last year had to do with mothers and their children. I was personally impacted by these stories because of my own struggles as a single Latina mami in the United States. A sad and unfortunately not new pattern of women of color being separated from their children, often by the very entities charged with protecting families.

The current struggle of Angeline Hassel was one that I wrote about a few times here and one that hit especially close to home and not just because it is based in my own borough of Queens, NYC.

Many people are asking us how can a loving, smart, and capable mother lose custody of her daughter? The answer is, Judge Esther Morgenstern, who now sits on the bench in IDV Brooklyn Family Court. She issued a warrant for Angeline’s arrest over a non threatening letter. You read the transcript, and the letter which are attached.
You judge for yourself.

Many people are asking us how is it Judge Fernando Camacho issued a Order of Protection against the respondent father, then turned around and and essentially let him take off with Aniysah? You read the Order of Protection which is attached and again you judge for yourself.

This case has been dragging out since March 3rd,2009 (over 303 days) and the year 2010 is approaching and still Angeline has not received a trial date as of yet.

Is this the treatment families can expect when entering the Family Court system?

You be the judge.

Tell us what you think?

i am so sorry to hear of your ordeal, I read your letter and it was wonderfully written. YOu did a good job on expressing yourself and getting facts across. Why the judge thought otherwise makes me think that you are having a similar situation as I am in Crawford County Meadville, PA> The children and youth services have legally stole my child also, yet i have proof that the court order explanation as to why they could take my daughter out of my home could be proven to be false, no one was interested in hearing or seeing that evidence. My daughter was taken in june 2009 and now the hearing date is for march 2010. We are dealing with a caseworker who lied on us, a racial issue since we are a mixed couple, a court system who has a district attorney who lies blatantly and a whole county that is caught up in the biggest money maker for this small town, Children and YOuth SErvices..
We are fighting as well as pocket book will allow and our own knowledge enables us to file complaints, download the proper forms and continue to hope in truth prevailing.
My heart goes out to you, and I will be praying for you and your daughter. May God Bless and Keep your daughter safe.

Private Law cases are a common thing within the UK,and are becoming more intense with reference to Parental alienation syndrome.

One spouse makes a false allegation of child abuse against their former partner to obtain a residential order and custody of the child.

The expert witnesses within the family courts, and Guardians make and subject their report, which are very biased to the other Parent.
Psychologists and other profeshionals also give conflicting evidence in the family court arena by labeling individuals with controversial conditions like MSBP.
My caseload has increased tenfold with reference to Private Law Cases.
Parent alienation syndrome is an emotional crime.

I too am hearing more and more about family courts gone wild. Is there no ombudswoman? It seems there needs to be a higher level where those having problems can find help.

The comment from Christine Johnson also sounds sadly familiar. Apparently, mixed race couples can have a whole new set of challenges in family court custody issues.

Last year, a woman wrote a story for us about how she lost physical custody of her children (despite being the breadwinner and the primary care giver)because her chlildren looked more LIKE their Nigerian father. She’s been without them for many years now. A scholar in the field said such treatment by the judiciary is not surprising.

I think the women living through these difficulties are too overwhelmed to address the system, but it seems systemic changes are in order.
