24 Dec 2009It’s the original bi-lingual English/Spanish Christmas song full of cheese and employed too often as proof that a holiday celebration is “diverse”. Pero I know in casa Mala, it’s the favorite of my younger daughter who thinks it’s the best song up there with “twinkle twinkle”
I wonder if Jose Feliciano ever gets tired of singing that song? Even if he does, he certainly isn’t appreciative of peeps taking it and twisting it into an anti-migrant “spoof”.
The “joke”, filled with unfunny racist stereotypes of immigrants, the undocumented and Latinos, was posted on a right-wing website(thought about linking to it pero didn’t want to give them the traffic) and features such classy lyrics as:
Ilegals in my yard, illegals in my yard, illegals in my yard, throw them some pesos and they work so hard.
Ilegals in my yard, illegals in my yard, illegals in my yard, I don’t even ask if they got a Green Card.
They’re gonna pave up my driveway this Christmas,
They’re gonna clean all my cars this Christmas,
They’re gonna shovel all the snow this Christmas,
Those illegals in my yard. They’re gonna dig me a pool this Christmas,
They’re gonna landscape my lawn this Christmas,
They’re gonna cook me some tacos this Christmas.
Illegals in my yard, 16 arrive in a stolen car.
I wonder if that’s what Lou Dobbs sings at Christmas.
Jose Feliciano released a statement condemning the song:
I am filled with disgust that the HumanEvents.com website and Talk Radio Network producers Matt Fox and AJ Rice (‘The Fox and Rice Experience’) have utilized the joyful spirit of Feliz Navidad without authorization to spread a message of racism and fear during the Christmas season. While I am reluctant to draw any further attention to this highly offensive recording, I feel it necessary to speak-out and distance my song from such a bigoted political agenda. When I wrote and composed Feliz Navidad, I chose to sing in both English and Spanish in order to create a bridge between two wonderful cultures during the time of year in which we hope for goodwill toward all. Instead, the appalling hate speech presented in “Illegals in my Yard” is revolting to all of us that treasure the true meaning of Christmas. They should be truly ashamed
Wonder if he would be appalled by this attempt…
Oh well. Here’s hoping you and yours have a happy holiday.
xoxo
