In more bad election news, yesterday voters in Maine said yes to Question 1, overturning the state’s marriage equality law.
Prerna Lal at Dream Activistreminds us how this ties into the immigration issue:
Why should an average non-gay DREAM Act student care about my queer rants? Because like your families, like the Mejia-Perez family, our non-straight families are also scrutinized, separated and pulled apart since the law refuses to recognize them and grant them full and equal rights. Quite like President Obama delivered change for your families and has yet to deliver, he is also largely ignoring LGBT families.
When you do eventually gain the right to vote on other types of families at the polls, just remember what your own family, especially those who lived in mixed-status families, have had to endure. After that, question your ‘faith-based leaders.’ Ask them why they exclude same-sex families when they talk about ‘family unity?’ The Catholic Church, on one hand, stands up strong for the rights of undocumented workers. On the same page, it denounces civil rights for gay couples. Ask your pastors and priests, your clergy and pundits whether ‘God’ would deport a gay immigrant over a straight immigrant. Ask them whether some rights are more important than others. Ask them to support all families.

Yeah, isn’t a traditionalist principled majority SUCH a pain in the ass? Take heart though… I’m sure there’s a sympathetic federal judge or holier-than-thou legislator you can cry to if you want “equality” all that badly. They’re always happy to slap the majority in the face if their hearts bleed for you.

Yeah, a mob is a majority too, I guess we should just let that majority destroy entire cities, huh? The majority wants L.A. to burn! Why do the holier-than-thou people stop us?

[...] a queer in a state that pulled the same trick Maine just did, I know the only think that helped me feel better post election was a nice dose of scathing bitter [...]

This made me sick to my stomach and I’m 100 percent hetero. Love is love no matter if it’s different races or different sexes. Next thing ya know, these stupid religious freaks are gonna be outlawing interracial marriage next. Progress. What a beautiful thing. I fully fully fully support all GLBT no matter what. Wow, women with children get into same sex relationships as do men. Gonna stop that too? If I had a girlfriend were I bi or gay, heh, I’d live with her with my head held high! Nice to see Maine is living in the old days. Beautiful. end sarcasm. And people wonder why I turned my back on all religion. Here’s to being acceptable toward all walks of life and being an Agnostic Polytheist.

Having lived in Maine, even though it was a while ago, I know how conservative the state can seem. However, what the hell is traditional? Whose traditions? And why should people have to beg for equality, not in quotes and this is from someone who dislikes marriage as an institution in general
