11 Sep 2009I almost feel like I’m obligated to write something today about 9-11 and frankly, I’m tired of the date. It’s exhausting on so many levels since the combination of numbers can be multiplied, added, subtracted and divided in so many ways. It’s a date that carries real physical weight and reaction in my muscles and bones. I can feel it settling, heavy in my gut.
I survived 9-11-01. Not in some abstract way but in a real sitting in a subway car underground in downtown Manhattan for houra as smoke and fire rose above. My mother survived 9-11-01, feeling the World Trade Center reverberate from the impact of a plane, she managed to lead all of her employees to safety. It was the second time she survived an attack on the WTC.
Pero I also have to sit down with my hijas, half Chilenas, and talk about their relatives that did not survive 9-11-73 or the 17 years of U.S. sponsored military dictatorship that followed. It is why the family of my younger daughter came to the United States. It is why the family of my older daughter remain active in Chilean politics in the southern part of that country.

10 Sep 2009I just found this really kinda eerie video over at CNN–it is video of the day of dedication when the new Department of Homeland Security (which is the department that deals with ICE and “catching and rounding up illegals.” There is no commentary–just a speech by Janet Napolitano and some blubbering nonsense sort of low wave frequency sound coming out of Joe Leiberman.
What is the point of this video–besides to inspire some sort of terror at the decaying aging building that looks like a former prison that is soon to be the home of the DHS?
While Maegen covers all the serious parts of last night’s speech, I will study the gossipy hissy fits on display for the world to see.
The following is a statement released by Joe Wilson of South Carolina–the same man who yelled “YOU LIE” at Obama during his speech last night.
The reason he yelled? Obama stated that the health care package on the table right now would NOT cover “illegal aliens.”
I tried to do research on what Joe Wilson’s voting record and time in office has been like…and it was impossible. Pretty much every site I went to that was *reputable* (as opposed to the thousands of nativist sites congratulating Wilson) is down. What *is* known is that Wilson’s Democratic challenger, Rob Miller, has recieved thousands of dollars of donations since the outburst. And frankly, with Wilson starting off his apology by declaring he is doing it because Republican leaders asked him too–I only see things getting worse for him.

10 Sep 2009I was able to watch most of President Obama’s speech before Congress last night selling his health care reform package. Not surprisingly, I have quite a few thoughts on the speech, it’s contents and reactions to it (those that follow VivirLatino or me on twitter were able to read some of that commentary). Pero before I get into that here is the full text of the President’s speech.
Madame Speaker, Vice President Biden, Members of Congress, and the American people:
When I spoke here last winter, this nation was facing the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. We were losing an average of 700,000 jobs per month. Credit was frozen. And our financial system was on the verge of collapse.
As any American who is still looking for work or a way to pay their bills will tell you, we are by no means out of the woods. A full and vibrant recovery is many months away. And I will not let up until those Americans who seek jobs can find them; until those businesses that seek capital and credit can thrive; until all responsible homeowners can stay in their homes. That is our ultimate goal. But thanks to the bold and decisive action we have taken since January, I can stand here with confidence and say that we have pulled this economy back from the brink.
I want to thank the members of this body for your efforts and your support in these last several months, and especially those who have taken the difficult votes that have put us on a path to recovery. I also want to thank the American people for their patience and resolve during this trying time for our nation.
But we did not come here just to clean up crises. We came to build a future. So tonight, I return to speak to all of you about an issue that is central to that future – and that is the issue of health care.

9 Sep 2009It’s still not clear what happened. What we do know is that all 104 passengers were released. The Mexican police force went into the plane after all the passengers were released, and freed the crew. Following that, up to 7 people were seen being taken off the plane in handcuffs. And the Mexican authorities is saying is that there were never any explosives on the plane.
More information will be forthcoming.

9 Sep 2009An AeroMexico plane was hijacked in Cancun, Mexico earlier today. It is not clear who the hijackers are. Allegedly one is Bolivian and the demand is to meet with Mexican President Felipe Calderon. There were also reports that the hijackers claimed to have an explosive.
Reports say that the 104 passengers have been released after the plane safely landed in Mexico City airport.
Stay tuned as reports come in.

Immigrants You Need to Wait This Much
Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., has decided to delay introducing legislation to overhaul the nation’s immigration laws in hopes of bringing more senators on board and crafting a bipartisan bill, his spokesman said Tuesday…”We are pleased with the framework we have put together so far and the broad-based support it has gotten from a diverse group of those interested in this issue,” [Brian] Fallon said. “The fact that health care is taking longer than expected gives us additional time to now shop our ideas to a number of Republicans to see what they think and what changes they suggest.”
In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past three days, I thought it’d be good to let you know that tonight, President Obama will be giving a speech about health care.
And in case you’ve been living under a concrete slab for the past three months, you know–health care and Obama is secretly the U.S.S.R. coming to get all us God Fearing Christians.
Thank Heavens Obama’s going to give a speech tonight to help clear things up. Right? Well…except…if Obama doesn’t clear everything up TONIGHT, in crystal clear fashion, his presidency is dead. Or something.
NBC gave a slightly more nuanced lead up to the speech.

My plan of action? I will wait to see what the dude has to say. And then I will either groan in disgust or cheer. And Obama will finish his last three years of his presidency. And the U.S. will continue on. Just as it did before white folks slipped into OMG-the-black-man-has-power! hysteria.
