Like La Macha, I also teared up watching his memorial service. But our friend Bill O’Reilly says we’re blowing his legacy out of proportion and that America needs to stop idealizing the man. Check it out:
What else could he say? O’Reilly pooh poohs all gestures of admiration towards any person of color. While he does make a couple of good arguments, the overall rhetoric is meant to be hateful and that’s just what it is.
But I do agree with at least one Fox News commentator on this issue. Geraldo Rivera criticized celebrities who showed up to salute Jackson at his memorial service, but who were silent when Michael was being skewered with child molestation charges.
What do you think? Is the glorification of MJ going too far? And what about those silent celebrities?

I don’t know. I think there’s a LOT of racism in why majority of white folks are all “This is too much”–I was listening to an NPR show last night that said something huuuuuuge, lik.e 80% of white folks think that the coverage is “too much” and should be scaled down, compared to 20% of black folks. I think that there is a LOT of racism in that–along with a lot of white folks who only knew the man in the late 90′s/2000′s–and only think of him as a ‘freak.’
But on the other hand–I am REALLY tired of people saying–well, he might have been a child molester–but whateva. that’s not important. Well, actually, it is. It’s important to not be dismissive of that shit for survivors.
Oh–and then people are calling him a great humanitarian and activist–and I’m just kinda stunned by that–he *wasn’t*!!!! Sure he did some cool things–but those cool things are about the same equivalent as Angelina Jolie’s cool things. It’s mighty easy to donate millions of dollars when YOU HAVE MILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO DONATE!!!!
I’m just confused why we can’t memorialize him by saying “the dude was a complicated man and we have a complicated relationship with him”–why it has to be either he was a hero that pees silver pee, or he was the anti-christ.
(btw, I totally get the need to put him on a Jesus pedistal, to put him up higher and higher so that assholes like O’Reilly have a harder chance of knocking him down–but I have to say, i really appreciated the brother on NPR last night who said–look, Jackson was an amazing entertainer that reached out to us on so many different levels–but he was no sammy davis junior when it came to dance, he was no duke ellington when it came to music, he was no nat cole when it came to singing.
That really helped me just to put it all in context in my head–Michael jackson was SO important in my life growing up–but he wasn’t Jesus. he was a complicated dude.
And I think that’s why I really loved his memorial service–I was *expecting* there to be elephants and shit–but in the end–it was just touching memories that really helped to complicate our understanding of him. and THAT’s what I hope people remember about him. that he was a good father that also had molestation charges pressed against him. That he was a leader in black entertainment that also appeared to “go white” as he got older. That he often presented very effeminate and “gay” but married two white women…etc.
I think if we look at all those amazing ambiguities, we’ll learn a lot more about him and our culture than if we put him on a pedestal or knock him off it. you know?
Unfortunatly, I don’t think people like O’Reilly care about the ambiguities of life!
