videolthumb33f94a679b19df6d0f00e21f8096b24fOusted Honduran president Manuel Zelaya has vowed to return to his country and to his position on Thursday. Pero he won’t be alone. Zelaya plans to bring an entourage with him including, according to news sources, Argentine President Cristina Kirchner, and the U.N. General Assembly and OAS chiefs.

The interim president of Honduras, Roberto Micheletti, said that Zelaya would be arrested upon his return.

The United Nations , OAS, and US President Obama have thrown their weight behind Zelaya, but since people have such short memories I would like to point out a few things:

By definition a coup is a change in power by force. Now while many may not agree with Zelaya’s move to change the constitution so that he could seek another term in office, he was calling for a vote. Storming someone’s house in the early morning and dragging their family out is a coup. In the hours immediately following the coup there were statements attributed to Zelaya saying that if the U.S. was not behind this, it would be over with in 48 hours. 48 hours have come and gone and while the US is supporting Zelaya.

However, besides linking Zelaya to the great Latin American cucos of the moment : Hugo Chavez, Evo Morales, and the Castros in Cuba, now the news is reporting that Zelaya had ties to drug trafficking and that the US’s DEA was aware of this.

Not surprisingly Hugo Chavez has something to say about this (trust me watching the images is more interesting than listening to Hugito).

The Organization of American States (OAS) has given Honduras 72 hours to restore democracy or the OAS will invoke the democracy clause and suspend their membership. It should be noted that a Chilean, Insulza is heading up the OAS and knows a little bit about coups. Insulza is also considered to be more left on the political spectrum.

PS: I’ve discovered this site, Blogging by boz, that has lots of Latin American info. I’m still not clear what the politics are there pero it has some good info in English as to what’s going down.
