This story is developing, and I am still in deep shock, but TMZ reports that Michael Jackson has just passed away:
We’ve just learned Michael Jackson has died. He was 50.Michael suffered a cardiac arrest earlier this afternoon at his Holmby Hill home and paramedics were unable to revive him. We’re told when paramedics arrived Jackson had no pulse and they never got a pulse back.
I really cannot believe it. He had a very tormented life but he was a talented musician like no other. This is truly tragic. RIP, Michael.
Meanwhile, I’m in Europe watching CNN (supposedly live) and they are reporting that he is just in a coma, and aren’t confirming he is dead yet. Does TMZ know something CNN doesn’t?
Update: Wolf Blitzer of CNN just confirmed Jackson’s death
via The LA Times and CBS.

25 Jun 2009Voto Latino conducted an interview with anti-immigrant hate crime survivor, Robert Cantu.
Cases like this one, and countless others are why I worry about the direction immigration reform is headed. Immigration has been colored as brown. So the equation usually breaks down a little something like this : immigrant=latino=mexican. Now math was never my strong point but I’m pretty sure that’s not right. So how do we make sure that the current moves for justice in immigration and against hate crimes are aligned, linked and honest about the ways race and ethnicity are viewed in this country?

25 Jun 2009Today is the day many have been waiting for: the sign that the Obama administration and members of Congress care about immigration reform.
So who is going to be at the White House meeting, that had already been postponed twice?
According to La Opinión:
Senadores:
Robert Menéndez (D)
Patrick Leahy (R)
Charles Schumer (D)
John McCain (R)
Mel MartÃnez (R)
John Cornyn (R)
Jeff Sessions (R)
Congresistas:
Lamar Smith (R)
Zoe Lofgren (D)
Xavier Becerra (D)
Howard Berman (D)
Lincoln DÃaz-Balart (R)
Luis Gutiérrez (D)
Nydia Velázquez (D)
Adam Putnam (R)
Anthony Weiner (D)
But color me unimpressed and not very hopeful given some of the language that lawmakers and so-called progressive groups are using to discuss immigration reform, language that promotes the “good immigrant/bad immigrant” dichotomy.
