6 Months and 10 Days : What Courts Value Latino Lives At

18 Jun 2009This morning in my inbox I received another email telling me, and whoever else was on this advocacy org’s coveted mailing list, that I should be vigilant about the rising tide of hate crimes and yet again the point of reference was the Holocaust Museum shooting.
Do I really need a reminder? Do I need to hear the frenzied 911 call of a mother after seeing her husband and daughter shot and killed? I know that audio is going around some blogs and media sites and I have refused to listen for my own personal sanity as a Latina mother but also as a statement against the exploitation of the pain of Latinas for the sake of “the story”
Would Hate Crimes legislation made a difference? Would it have prevented a Latino young man from having a noose placed around his neck and dragged around a parking lot in Ohio? Maybe if the young man would have died his lie would have been worth more than the paltry sentence his horror was met with.
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – A central Ohio teenager accused of putting a noose around a Hispanic boy’s neck and dragging him in a parking lot has been sentenced to 10 days in jail.
The 18-year-old was sentenced Wednesday in juvenile court in Mount Vernon, a city of 15,000 residents an hour’s drive northeast of Columbus. He dropped his original plea of not guilty and pleaded no contest to ethnic intimidation.
A charge of aggravated menacing was dropped.
When Luis Ramirez was murdered, we did not need to be told that his death was part of a long historical line of anti-immigrant and anti-Latino hate. We did not need to wait for the absurd sentencing verdict that left his two killers, who were charged not with murder but with assault, with 6 months to 23 months in jail. Meanwhile Luis Ramirez’s family suffers a life sentence without him.
Want to stop hate crimes? Stop the hate speech masked as political punditry that fosters the idea that Latino lives are worth less.
Want something more political and linked to the wider immigration issue? Want a better sense of how many Latinos and immigrants are under attack? Demand that President Obama stop raids, incarceration, and deportation so that immigrants don’t feel like they have to choose between between their lives and living with their families.
The President likes to break bread and pray with Latinos, while our communities recite a litany of rosarios for our familias.

She had her music collection open for sharing with others, she didn’t kill any of the artists who recorded the music. What kind of country do we live in when someone gets fined nearly 2 million dollars for that and others get away, literally, with murder? [...]

THE REASON THESE UPRISINGS ARE OCCURING IS BECAUSE , THE HISPANICS DON’T HAVE TO FOLLOW BY THE SAME GUIDE LINES. AN AMERICAN BORN THIS INCLUDES AMERICAN BORN HISPANICS, AND ANY OTHER FORIEGNER WHO LIVE HERE HIRE. YOUR PEOPLE GET JOBS WETHER THEY ARE QUALIFIED OR NOT JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE HISPANIC . AN AMERICAN HAS TO BE BI-LINGUAL IN ORDER TO WORK HERE IN AMERICA. BUT A HISPANIC WILL BE HIRED SPEAKING ONLY SPANISH IN THIS COUNTRY AND CANNOT OR WILL NOT SERVE THE AMERICAN SPEAKING PEOPLE. WE HAVE TO HIRE MOVIE STARS, HAVE SPANISH SPEAKING ONLY MOVIES TALK SHOWS ETC. AND THE ENGLISH ONES HAVE TO HAVE SPANISH SUB TITLES. WE AREN’T GIVEN THE SAME COURTESY.
