Wanda Sykes Offends Delicate D.C. Sensibility

I must say upfront that don’t find Wanda Sykes particularly funny. I think she’s a ground breaking comedienne, and I would never take away from her the work that she’s done breaking ground for black/lesbian women to declare themselves and be judged based on their skills rather than who they are. But I don’t find her that funny.

Having said that–I found very little in her skit at the White House Correspondents Dinner to be outraged at.
There was some very funny parts, there was mostly stuff that wasn’t that funny–but material that would cause outrage? Meh.

I personally would’ve been more offended at Stephen Colbert, who I think is a much more skillful comedian, and who, frankly, completely demasculated the entire Republican party and the president. But whatever. That’s just me.

What do you think? Do you think jokes about kidney failure and “pulling out” are worth the outrage? Do you think they’re too crass for the people of D.C. who have made and defended “jokes” about Barak the Magic Negro?

Sykes, a Black woman, insulted a WHITE MAN in public and on nat’l tv. That’s her crime and I’m sure she will soon be sentenced, just like Oprah.

What was she thinking?

A million blogs about this today, but none of them point out what the woman actually did that may destroy her – PUBICALLY INSULTED A WHITE MAN IN AMERICA.

There is a significant difference in wishing a medical emergency and possible death on someone and disagreeing with a President’s policies based on political idealogy. Can you imagine if the Democrats weren’t allowed to disagree with a Republican president? The outrage and outcry would be huge…understandibly.

Political disagreement is what makes us unique as a nation. Wishing ill will and death on someone is what makes Wanda Sykes unique.

As for the “Barack the Magic Negro” paraody, I challenge you to show as much criticism for the author of that LA Times article as you do for those who use that parody to make fun of the fact that no one on the left found it outrageous.

Hypocrisy…another unique quality we can find from those on the left.

Timerunner: ?

LDCharris: minor point which is really nitpicking–kidney failure does not equal death. niether does water boarding. not funny absolutely. but not wishing death on somebody–and frankly, even if she did, it wouldn’t be the first time a comedian wished death on somebody. How many jokes have we heard through the years about “the bitch” aka a wife who is harrassing a husband needing to be bitch slapped/shot/fucked up/etc?

Look, I really don’t want to get into a “what’s worse” scenario. all I’m asking is *really*? Is D.C. that freaking sensitive? washington D.C.? The home of Rush Limbaugh? *really* it’s that sensitive?

I think it’s got a lot to do with what LDC had to say–a black lesbian woman is joking around about white men. What’s next? Our Magic Negro president imprisoning anybody whose families used to own slaves?

also, maybe the outrage is that it is assumed when a white man makes a joke about ‘magic negros’ he “doesn’t mean anything” but when a black woman makes a joke about a white man, she really means it?

Wanda Sykes overstepped her “EGO” being a “black lesbian” I never witnessed so much racism and hatred EVER! She should not be a “Spokes person” for ANY reputable organization including homosexuals… I’m not gay or black for that matter but I do look down on anyone who supports her “CAUSES”, And who is “PRESIDENT” Obama to laugh and applaud such boasting of her hatred towards other Americans! ALSO why now is their a “Black” person around on every interview or commentary about Obama???? POLITICALLY CORRECTNESS has gone too far. THE AMERICAN VOTERS MADE A MISTAKE…. AND I AM ONE OF THEM….. SORRY! I won’t even get into the policy issues we are going to see……. but he can ALWAYS blame it on Bush!!! RAISE MY TAXES!!!!! LOL

Maybe they should just invite priests and nuns to speak at these events. Put everybody to sleep but nothing controversial to talk about later.

That is funny and whoever finds it not funny will have to contend with all the other not funny material out there. This however was FUNNY, so contend with that.

A person “wishing” the failure of a president and by association a nation insults many. Speaking of one person who wished that and wishing anything short of their slow torturous death is acceptable in my books.

Heaven knows if it’s about Rush the idiots who like him will scream like babies until they’re blue. Hopefully that will make it easier to identify and ignore them

I didn’t watch the video because I find her to be nails on a chalkboard level of aggravating (her voice alone…) but I read a msnbc.com article on it and I don’t think it’s appropriate to joke that Rush is the 20th hijacker especially in front of the President. 9/11 jokes are not funny period, if she wants to do that stuff in some club fine but it was no appropriate given the setting.

I’m with you HJ, I rarely find her funny, ad I don’t necessarily find her voice that irritating, but I do think that she relies too much on the “joshing around” sort of joke telling, rather than setting a story up and using irony, sarcasm, etc.

I think that the 9-11 joke wasn’t in bad taste–it wasn’t making fun of survivors or any of that–I just think it wasn’t that funny. I see her point–she was *trying* to say that limbaugh has the same ideals as the hijackers–but it wasn’t skillfully told and didn’t rely on any of the above mentioned irony, sarcasm, etc. I think somebody like stephen colbert could have used that same premise (limbaugh=hijackers) and made it funny some how by using something as simple as a raised eyebrow.

James Philpott: If wishing the failure of a president insults the nation, we just had 8 years of it, so I guess you are wishing the slow, torturous death of the Democratic Party and its supporters, including yourself?

As for “the idiots who like” Rush…. If you don’t like Rush, why not try arguing the issues he raises, instead of attacking the man and his supporters? You wouldn’t dare to debate with Rush so you resort to abuse. Ad hominem attacks reflect poorly on those who make them and that includes most Dems these days.

Take some smelling salts, you touchy, humorless Aunt Sallies.

I thought Wanda was hilarious! I just saw another clip on MSNBC of the “kidney failure” joke…and although I can understand how people reading about it here would harrumph and take offense, her delivery was what really made me blurt out a big HA! again. Limbaugh is the kind of jerk that dishes it out so he can certainly take it too.

My husband and I were watching on Sat. night and he could barely stand it because he’s recovering from heart surgery. Laughing hurts! We knew that come Sunday all the thin-skinned whiners would start coming up with reasons to take offense. So predictable. You think Wanda didn’t know y’all would react like that. She doesn’t care. She a comedian. Not a CNN anchor or the Atty General.

I enjoyed watching her in the Adventures of Old Christine however, we won’t watch it anymore. I am sick and tired of Hollywood hate speech. To wish someone dead is offensive and ugly and Obama showed little class with his laughter.

We don’t support television or networks who promote individuals who engage in hate speech. America is about tolerance, not violent ugliness.

Camille–I agree totally that Limbaugh is a total jerk and can dish it out beyond dishing it out—that’s why I really am finding all the outrage to be well, ironic and rather amusing–Limbaugh needs defending? really?

lindy–again, wishing kidney failure on somebody and 20th hijacker jokes are not wishing somebody dead. Nitpicky point, I know, but you can live without kidneys, and thousands of people actually do. Also what is “barack the magic negro”? What is a “negro?” is that by definition dehumanizing somebody who is a *president*?

Oh, and I do recall that Pat robertson actually called for the assassination of a foreign leader. Does that count as hate speech? What does it count as when the administration actually takes the opinion into consideration and forms a plot?

also, again–why does a black woman making a joke about kidney failure=wishing death on somebody=she really means it–but a white guy making the same sort of joke=just joking=he doesn’t really mean it?

Limbaugh made fun of Michael Fox’s Parkinson disease.
Limbaugh and Osama bin Laden both called for violence against Americans. Limbaugh repeatedly called for violence during the Democratic Convention.

Limbaugh wants the economy to fail because he feels this would help Repbublicans get elected. Sykes think it’s wrong to want more Americans to suffer the loss of jobs and homes. So she basically said if Rush wants Americans to suffer then she want him to suffer kidney failure. Kidney failure not heart failure. Hundreds of thousands of people suffer kidney and continue to live for years using dialysis machines.

Damn ok see here’s what gets to me. I don’t find Sykes funny and I didn’t think her routine was very funny. Pero I’m just kind of humorless like that. ja ja.

Pero look at all the comments here and everywhere. Where is that outrage for oh let’s say the death of Luis Ramirez?

I applaud Wanda, and hope that she continues to speak truth to racist power, such as to that ass limbaugh. Of course, we all know that he and others of his racist ilk wish President Obama to fail, because they want all African Americans to fail. They are also upset because, as an African American woman, Sykes has the nerve to call them on their racism. Keep it up, Wanda!!!

I personally loved Wanda Sykes’ roast! She said some pretty funny things, and yes, I was a bit taken aback by her comments regarding Rush Limbaugh and kidney failure. But my shock wasn’t that she said it but rather that I found myself thinking agreeing! It’s comedy, people, and I don’t think Ms. Sykes actually wants the man to die (just maybe fall ill enough that he can’t go on the air to spew his brand of hate anymore!). This man has done so much to harm the US and has said much worse things about us left-leaning folk, so in my opinion he is fair game for such harsh verbal treatment.

Anyway, it’s about time we see more ethnic diversity at these stupid luncheons anyway. And you’re right, if the jokes were delivered by a white comedian they would have still drawn criticism, but perhaps not the backlash that poor Ms. Sykes is about to endure. This being said, though, I would caution people from making broad generalizations about all white men…there are white men like myself who do not support the old way of thinking and do not support the old establishment. No one should be judged by the color of his or her skin…it wasn’t right before, and it isn’t right now.

I don’t know why everybody is more upset then Rush….I think he saw it for what it was because he does the same thing. Have conservatives become that sensitive that they are taking a comedian words so seriously. I think the GOP needs to focus more energy discussing there own agenda instead of falling for these silly time wasting traps, so independent like me can actually make a comparison on who polices are better…Dem or Rep?
