We told you yesterday about the murderer who seemed to be targeting women through Craigslist. The latest breaking news is that a suspect has been arrested:

The fiance of the suspect has come to his defense, but I can’t help but think she sounds like an incredibly naive person:

Philip Markoff, arrested Monday after an intensive police investigation, “could not hurt a fly,” his future wife Megan McAllister wrote in an e-mail to ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

“Philip is an intelligent man who is just trying to live his life so if you could leave us alone we would greatly appreciate it,” she wrote Tuesday.

“We expect to marry in August and share a wonderful, meaningful life together.”

Famous last words, no?

I hope for her sake that this is all a big mistake–but this is not the first time a clean cut “intelligent” man turns out to be a violent anti-woman jackass.

Joe Arpaio, the draconian sheriff that is connected to all sorts of human rights violations, was on Stephen Colbert last night. People protested his presence on the show (which Stephen mentions in his questioning), and Mr. Arpaio is getting some flak because he chose to come on show rather than attend a meeting about the border.

I don’t know, I think Colbert has gotten in much more pointed critiques against others. Although I do really appreciate his questioning about racial profiling.

att-pantech-matrix-pro-dual-slider-thumb11I sat last night reading all the wonderful entries to the Pantech Matrix Pro telefono giveaway that asked you how Latinos could best use smartphone technology to raise their political game. Really there were so many great and thoughtful responses that talked about art, activism, and the example of the Obama campaign. I wish I had phones for each of you.

Pero unfortunately, I only have one phone and that will be going to………

Oscar Flores.

What was it about Oscar’s email? I think the way his answer integrated the personal with the political got me. Without getting all up in his business Oscar wrote about moving from a place with nearly zero technology to the U.S. and how smartphone technology could have helped him as he navigated organizing within the racial justice paradigm and other intersections.

A sincere gracias to all who took the time to write thoughtful answers, and a sincere thanks to AT&T, Pantech and BuzzCorps for providing the prize. Stay tuned. VL will have more contests and giveaways.

VivirLatino told you a while back about the hypocrite of the week, Paraguayan president, Fernando Lugo, fathering a child while he was a bishop.

Well, turns out that Lugo has probably been “hypocriting” his…er…seed all over Paraguay:

Paraguayan president Fernando Lugo has received a second demand to recognise the paternity of a child.

President Lugo, who is a former bishop, shocked the country last week when he acknowledged a two-year-old boy as his son.

The Pope released him from his vows of chastity only last July, two years after he renounced the priesthood.

The 27-year-old woman making the latest demand says her six-year-old is the son of Mr Lugo.

In a press conference, the woman said her relationship with the then Bishop Lugo had begun in 2001, when she had gone to him for help with trying to contact the father of her first child.

Why does it seem that sexually promiscuity (even in the face of vows to God) are a prerequisite for elected service?

marriott_murderMany women (and men) offer personal services (ranging from sex work to massages to house cleaning) over Craigslist. It’s a dangerous thing to do, especially for sex workers. Just as recently as a few months ago a young woman in my area got beat up and raped very badly by a university professor, and officers *arrested her* (instead of the rapist) when she went to report the rape because she was illegally prostituting herself.

Well, it looks like things are taking an even more dangerous turn for sex workers. The latest:

Boston police are investigating a shooting death inside a luxury hotel in the city.

Commissioner Ed Davis said that the 26-year-old victim from New York City was offering massage services through Craigslist.

Police believe that she may have been involved with prostitution and that there was an attempted robbery.

The victim, whose name was not released, was found around 10 p.m. Tuesday. A security guard found the woman bound and shot multiple times in the chest in the hallway on the 20th floor of the Marriott Copley Plaza at 110 Huntington Avenue.

She was taken to Boston Medical Center where she later died.

This horrible murder may be connected to a previous robbery of another sex worker. The police just released survelliance video (pictured), and are asking for you to contact them if you have any leads at all.

If you are selling services over Craigslist, please take care of yourself and be extra cautious until things are figured out.

U.S. Latinos 20 Million Strong on the Internet

6:37 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Internet|Media|society|Tech · Comments Off

20 Apr 2009

two-teens-with-online-math-tutor-fullGone are the days when marketers and businesses doubted whether U.S. Latinos would use the Internet en masse. Well, actually, they still doubt — but now they have some hard numbers to contend with. According to a new study by comScore, there are some 20 million Latinos online and that number is growing fast. Latinos as a user group are growing at a rate of close to 50% faster than the general population. MediaWeek reports:

In February of 2009 comScore found there to be 20.3 million U.S. Hispanic visitors on the Web, representing a surge of 5.8 percent versus February of 2008. During that same period of time the general Web population grew by 3.9 percent. A similar growth disparity was evident for engagement measures such as total minutes spent online and total page views, where Hispanics exhibited growth that was five times as fast as the general population.

While the numbers look really good, MediaWeek reports that Latinos still only make up 11% of the total online population due to late adoption of the Internet.

Perez Hilton vs. Miss California on Gay Marriage

1:11 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Blogs|Events|GLBT · 21 Comments

This idiot is representing my state in the world’s most irrelevant television event? At least fellow Latino blogger Perez Hilton tries to make this moronic and antiquated pageant somewhat relevant, but look at the response he was awarded for his good intentions. Note as well the applause she got. Not surprising when you consider who might be attending such a shitshow.

Oh, and she didn’t win.

April is National Poetry Month : Alfonsina Storni

9:36 am By Maegan la Mamita Mala · Argentina|literature|Women · Comments Off

20 Apr 2009

180px-alfosinastorniThe inspiration for the heart wrenching song, Alfonsina y el Mar, Argentine poetisa Alfonsina Storni was an actress, teacher, and mother.

TÚ ME QUIERES BLANCA
Tú me quieres alba,
Me quieres de espumas,
Me quieres de nácar.
Que sea azucena
Sobre todas, casta.
De perfume tenue.
Corola cerrada

Ni un rayo de luna
Filtrado me haya.
Ni una margarita
Se diga mi hermana.
Tú me quieres nívea,
Tú me quieres blanca,
Tú me quieres alba.

Tú que hubiste todas
Las copas a mano,
De frutos y mieles
Los labios morados.
Tú que en el banquete
Cubierto de pámpanos
Dejaste las carnes
Festejando a Baco.
Tú que en los jardines
Negros del Engaño
Vestido de rojo
Corriste al Estrago.

Tú que el esqueleto
Conservas intacto
No sé todavía
Por cuáles milagros,
Me pretendes blanca
(Dios te lo perdone),
Me pretendes casta
(Dios te lo perdone),
¡Me pretendes alba!

Huye hacia los bosques,
Vete a la montaña;
Límpiate la boca;
Vive en las cabañas;
Toca con las manos
La tierra mojada;
Alimenta el cuerpo
Con raíz amarga;
Bebe de las rocas;
Duerme sobre escarcha;
Renueva tejidos
Con salitre y agua;
Habla con los pájaros
Y lévate al alba.
Y cuando las carnes
Te sean tornadas,
Y cuando hayas puesto
En ellas el alma
Que por las alcobas
Se quedó enredada,
Entonces, buen hombre,
Preténdeme blanca,
Preténdeme nívea,
Preténdeme casta.

Huge props to Blabbeando for posting and translating this debate on the “storm” of gay marriage in NYS.

Sometimes leaders say things on the Spanish language media that they wouldn’t say in the English marriage media, or take an issue from a perspective that isn’t usually covered. For example, is Luis Tellez, a board member behind NOM (who are behind the storm commercial)really saying that no fault divorces have done more harm than good to women of color since apparently they are to blame with the problems people of color families face? Sure sounds like it.
