28 Apr 2009The bad news for Paraguayan president Fernando Lugo just keeps coming. After news that at least two women were claiming Lugo fathered children with them, the latest gossip leaking out is that there is a third woman about ready to do the same and more may be on the way:
Newspapers and TV programmes have been dominated by stories of women coming forward to claim they had a child with the former Catholic bishop.
This “political soap opera”, complained one of these reports, is “paralysing the government”.
Three women have made allegations so far and there were reports in the Paraguay media that there may be more claims to come.
It has been a testing time for a man who was elected proclaiming the virtues of honesty and ending corruption.
One of the women has alleged she was 16 when the relationship began – making her under the legal age of consent of 17 – and a public prosecutor is now considering the implications of that claim.
Another said she turned to Mr Lugo as a bishop for help when she had been abandoned with a new born child, but he abused his position in the Church to exploit their relationship, and a year later she was carrying his child.
You know, although I’ve made several jokes about this whole mess, reading about the experiences of the women Lugo was with is actually quite disturbing to me. Women believed him, they loved him, they opened not just their hearts to him, but their bodies. Which says that this man is a skillful manipulator–nothing new for a politician–but maybe something we need to stop excusing when it comes to women?
I don’t really care if Lugo wants to have sex and impregnate every woman in Paraguay–but is it really ok for him to be using his position of power to better manipulate women into doing what he wants? Is it ok to leave women to deal with the stigma and economic difficulties of being a single mami?
When do men ever have to accept responsibility for *their* actions?

27 Apr 2009From the community news section over at Flip Flopping Joy comes the story of a Chicago teen, Oscar Guzman, who was beaten by the police because Guzman was “threatening” to the police. Totally justified. Except that Guzman was 16, autistic, and standing in front of his family’s restaurant doing nothing.
Guzman, 16, was standing on the sidewalk Wednesday night, taking a break from working in his family’s fast-food restaurant in the Pilsen neighborhood. He was watching cars go by when a police cruiser pulled up and two officers began asking him questions, his family says.
Guzman didn’t understand the questions, said his sister Nubia, 25, and looked down, away and eventually began walking away. Diagnosed with moderate autism at age 4, he doesn’t like confrontation, his sister said.
The officers went after him, his family said, prompting the frightened boy to run into the family restaurant, yelling “I’m a special boy!” as he fled, his sister said.Despite Guzman’s parents yelling to the officers that he was a “special boy” with “special needs,” one of the officers struck Guzman in the head with a baton, cutting a gash that would require eight staples, his sister said. The parents witnessed the blow being struck, she said.
On the ground, blood pouring from his head, Guzman, who has the mental capacity of a 5th grader, mumbled again and again, “I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I submit. I submit,” his family said.
Vivir Latino has covered previous cases of disability interacting with the police–and again, the results weren’t good. Although the Chicago police have set up a program to help officers understand and work with autistic folks–clearly the program has had the greatest success as of yet.
My heart is broken for Oscar and his family. I’m just overwhelmed with the level of violence people who should be “protected” are forced to deal with.

So, in spite my Salma getting her email hacked the other day, she still went through her remarriage to her much-too-old-not-even-attractive husband, Francois-Henri Pinault.
There is nothing for me to do but curl up and die for a few days.
Sigh.

27 Apr 2009It was surprising when it happened in California — but in Iowa? Yes, it isn’t science fiction: starting today, gay couples can legally marry in the state of Iowa — says the State Supreme Court, unanimously — and they’ve already started applying for their licenses. The Des Moines Register reports:
Cathy Johnson of Lineville stood at the courthouse door and collected petitions with at least 190 signatures. The petitioners asked Recorder Angela Horton not to issue licenses to same-sex couples. They also called for a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage.County recorders across Iowa received similar petitions. Dozens of licenses were issued in the state’s most populated counties. A handful of ceremonies were held when judges waived the standard three-day waiting period.
Throughout Iowa, county recorders were receiving similar petitions. Also, in the state’s most populated counties, recorders were busy issuing marriage licenses. In rural counties, however, few if any licenses were issued.
As you might have guessed, Iowa conservatives aren’t happy that marriage equality has come to their state. It is being reported that opponents have collected 3000 signatures with the intent of getting the ruling reversed. Check out what some of them think in the video above, and some “man on the street” opinions that might surprise you after the jump.

27 Apr 2009As if Chilangos didn’t have enough problems with the swine flu emptying the Mexican capital’s streets (see related video above), a 6.0 earthquake centered in Guerrero just shook the city. Reuters reports:
Mexico was hit by a 6.0 magnitude earthquake on Monday, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The USGS said the quake hit 19 miles south-southeast of Tixtla, Guerrero, about 150 miles south of the capital, Mexico City. It was 25.6 miles deep.
Buildings in the capital shook.
Quakes of this magnitude are classified as strong and are capable of causing severe damage.
The USGS earlier reported the quake measured 5.8.
As we speak, CNN is reporting that buildings in tourist spot Acapulco, located close to the epicenter, are being evacuated.

It was only a matter of time. If you haven’t caught the swine flu, you can now dance to it, cumbia style.
Th lyrics include talking about suicide via tacos al pastor, calling superman and Indiana Jones for help, and how Chilangos live under the smog so they’ll probably be ok anyway.

Today’s poet is Nicaraguan born Ruben Dario who was no fan of Teddy Roosevelt or imperial politics.
A ROOSEVELT
Primitivo y moderno, sencillo y complicado,
que aún reza a Jesucristo y aún habla en español.Eres soberbio y fuerte ejemplar de tu raza;
eres culto, eres hábil; te opones a Tolstoy.
Y domando caballos, o asesinando tigres,
eres un Alejandro-Nabucodonosor.
(Eres un profesor de energÃa,
como dicen los locos de hoy.)
Crees que la vida es incendio,
que el progreso es erupción;
Sois ricos.
Juntáis al culto de Hércules el culto de Mammón;
que el alfabeto pánico en un tiempo aprendió;

Jennifer wrote up about the swine flu outbreak that has emptied Mexican streets and has hit close to home, with a confirmed case of the illness right here in my own home borough of Queens, NYC. Thankfully swine flu isn’t something you can get from eating pork, porque everytime I hear the words “swine flu” I want some chuletas or pernil.
And now swine flu is the new racial profiling:
Secretary Janet Napolitano also said border agents have been directed to begin passive surveillance of travelers from affected countries, with instructions to isolate anyone who appears actively ill with suspected influenza.
In other words don’t stand close to a coughing Mexican? Or if you see a Mexican sneeze call ICE?
