I caught heat for criticizing President Obama’s appearance on Premio Lo Nuestro. I proposed that Obama’s use of Spanish in a way that didn’t address any real issues was pandering. Others thought I missed the point completely since after all Premio lo Nuestro is a social/entertainment event not a political one.
I still would argue that Obama’s video injected politics into an event that usually just injected with lots of silicone. A new poll shows that I may not be alone.
Recently, President Obama has been speaking in Spanish and appearing on
Spanish-language networks. AOL Latino just conducted a poll in which a
majority (54%) voted that the move was a strategic/political move, while
34% voted that he¹s just getting closer to his electorate.
Ok so the source is AOL Latino, which indicates that the poll may not be the most scientific, pero interesting none the less.
What do you all think?

As many of you may have heard by now, the gunman who shot and killed at least 12 people and then himself has been identified as Jiverly Wong. The details about this man’s life are slowly starting to emerge–and speculation is beginning. According to the AP, Wong was a Vietnamese immigrant that had really struggled since he came to the U.S.:
Police and Wong’s acquaintances portrayed him as an angry, troubled 41-year-old man who struggled with drugs and job loss and perhaps blamed his adopted country for his troubles. His rampage “was not a surprise” to those who knew him, Zikuski said.
“He felt degraded because people were apparently making fun of his poor English speaking,” the chief said.
Wong, who used the alias Jiverly Voong, believed people close to him were making fun of him for his poor English language skills, the chief said.
Until last month, he had been taking classes at the American Civic Association, which teaches English to immigrants and helps them prepare for citizenship tests.
As many of us who are in the middle of or otherwise connected to the immigrant community know, picking up and moving from your place of origin is an incredibly difficult experience under the best of circumstances. When you don’t speak English and don’t have a job, things get even worse. And if you leave your family behind or otherwise don’t bring along or join any support networks once you get to where you’re going, things are near impossible.
But of course, the complications of living in entirely new surroundings with little to no support structures and possibly also having mental illness complicated by drug use–those things will not be investigated into at all in this horrific case. What people will focus on is that Wong “hated the U.S.”–which, of course, implies that he was a terrorist. Or had terrorist connections. Or believed in terrorism. Etc. Etc.
I don’t for a minute want to suggest that this guy is somebody we should not be angry at, not be disgusted by, not be enraged at. He murdered other people who are in the same damn position he is–making the lives of their families unspeakably grief stricken.
But if we ever want to make these stupid, senseless, horrific shootings STOP–we must not take the easy way out and blame this man on “terrorism.” We must be willing to look in multiple places for the answers–our mental health system, our networking system for immigrants, the hyper violence of our culture that invites violent responses to seemingly trivial issues. There needs to be more than one method to “catch” somebody who is living on the brink of violent explosion–and as it stands, we don’t even have one method.
I send good thoughts to the families and community dealing with this crisis right now.

4 Apr 2009More details on the shooting at the American Civic Association in Binghamton, NY are coming out la Macha first wrote on it as it was unfolding yesterday.
The Sanctuary, which VivirLatino is a proud part of, released this statement yesterday:
The Editors of the Sanctuary send our heartfelt thoughts, prayers and energies to all families and community members affected by the tragedy in Binghamton today.
We are concerned with the immigrant community given our lives, our collective function and the fact that the shooting was reportedly done in a room of people testing (or taking a practice test) for their citizenship. It is especially heartbreaking that the dreams of so many were ended in such a violent way, and so very close to their fruition.
We will be paying close attention and working together to update you on this unfolding story.

3 Apr 2009This is all breaking news, so there’s no real definite answers yet–but there was a mass shooting at an immigrant center in New York. At least 12 people taking their U.S. citizenship tests have been confirmed dead at this point.
I’ve been following this on CNN, not the greatest coverage in the world, but Rick Sanchez did ask why there weren’t more interpreters available with news updates when this shooting is largely effecting the immigrant community. He didn’t get much an answer (that costs money, Rick), but at least he asked.
VL will keep you updated as news becomes available.
ETA: According to several news reports, the shooter was Jiverly Voong, 42, from upstate New York.

The effects, both good and bad, of San Francisco‘s policy of being a “sanctuary city” for undocumented immigrants are emerging, one year to date after it was instated. The San Francisco Chronicle reports:
As many as 185 undocumented youths held on felony criminal charges in San Francisco were shielded from deportation between 2005 and last summer, when the controversial policy came to light, according to juvenile probation statistics obtained by The Chronicle.City officials had previously said they had no way of telling how many youths had benefited from the policy. But a new preliminary report prepared by the Juvenile Probation Department at the request of Supervisor David Campos shows the number is much higher than previously suspected.
The report shows that between Jan. 1, 2005, and Feb. 28 of this year, 252 undocumented youths had cases in the juvenile probation system.
As you might expect, this data is not making some of the mayor’s enemies happy, and his opponents maintain that in its attempt to protect undocumented immigrants, San Francisco is instead harbouring drug dealers and other criminals. The Chronicle reports that 88% of the 180 were from Honduras and 83% were arrested on drug-related offenses, leading some to suspect a link to Honduran drug-related organizations.

Immigration is rarely talked about within the context of queerness. But people who are queer have a much harder time in a corrupt screwed up system than others do–and the reason why is because of the Catch-22 of “family sponsorship.” Take this case of lesbian couple Jay Mercado and Shirley Tan.
Tan applied for political asylum in 1995, and thought her case was still pending, until immigration officials knocked on her door this past January. She said her former lawyer never told her a deportation order was issued in 2002. Her bid for asylum failed because the threat to her life in the Philippines came from a relative — who shot her in the head when she was young over an inheritance battle — instead of from the government.
So after living here in the U.S. for 23 years, having family, forming a new life–Tan was scheduled to be deported to a country where she had suffered extreme violence. She can not get sponsored by her partner, who is a U.S. citizen–because her partner is a woman.

3 Apr 2009One of the craziest things I ever laid eyes on in Mexico (and that’s saying a lot) was the momias de Guanajuato: the Guanajuato mummies. Ancient Mexican civilizations didn’t practice mummification of their dead; these mummies are allegedly the exhumed bodies of once-buried deceased people whose families couldn’t pay to maintain their graves and were taken out to make room for dead people who could at a time in the 19th century when cholera was doing away with the population. Other sources say that when cholera was plaguing the region, dying — not dead – sufferers were buried in an effort to stop the spread of the disease, which explains the horribly agonized faces of the bodies who were literally buried alive.
Sound attractive? Well you’re in luck, as you won’t have to travel to Guanajuato to see them…the mummies are coming to a city near you!
A group of 60 Guanajuato mummies will kick off a tour of 10 American states, generating income of more than 6 million dollars for the country in the 3 years the exhibit will last [...]The tour will start at the Detroit Science Center and continue on to the cities of Minneapolis, Denver, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Seattle, Los Angeles, Chicago and Orlando, whose museams have up to 10,500,000 visitors per year.
Organizers of the traveling show, to be called “The Accidental Mummies”, say that this isn’t “a circus show” but a way to teach Americans about Guanajuato’s history and traditions. Milenio reports that over $600,000 is being spent in marketing the event and in hiring FBI artists to recreate busts of how the mummies must have looked when they were alive.

As noted in this previous post, the British are all aflame over how touchy feeling the Obamas are. Apparently, however, this handshake with a British policeman went over with a lot less hype with the British media than the Michelle touch did.

The guy in back of Obama, Gorden Brown, ignored the policeman’s offered hand.

2 Apr 2009I really appreciate the fact that whoever this interviewer is, is laughing and generously mocking this entire line of questioning. Yes, OMG, Michelle totally touched Jesus..I mean, the Queen (who is a freaking human being who shits just like the rest of us).
First lady Michelle Obama was expected to make headlines in Europe with her style and flair as she accompanied her husband to the Group of 20 summit, but it was a simple gesture that has set off a media frenzy.
While meeting Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II in London on Wednesday, the two women briefly embraced — not your typical scene at Buckingham Palace.
The British media called it everything from a breach of protocol to an extraordinary show of affection from the queen.
Yes, I am resisting making queer jokes about the queen right now. But I have to say in the Queen’s defense, I couldn’t resist touching Michelle either. The only difference, I guess, between the Queer Queen and the Queer Macha is that I’d wind up in Gitmo for doing what the Queen did.
