April is Poetry Month : Gabriela Mistral

13 Apr 2009

mistralI’m a bad poet for not jumping on this earlier pero April is National Poetry Month here in the U.S. So for what remains of the month I will post a poem from a Latino/Latin American author.

Hoy I chose Gabriela Mistral, porque I used to live in Chile where she was born and my second daughter is named after her. Pero also because Mistral, born Lucila Godoy y Alcayaga was the first Latin American mujer to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Besos

Judas besa a Jesús y deja impresa

¿Te acuerdas del primero…? Indefinible;

For the English translation, learn Spanish. Ay pues claro I’m kidding. I think in translation the poem sounds a little cheesy pero hey.

amazon-sucksAfter a full day of Easter activities yesterday, I came home to find that Amazon was hard at work, disappearing sales rankings from “adult” books. Amazon seems to have interesting fucked up way of deciding what is “adult” though, especially since the deleting of sales ranking and the blocking of the books from appearing in some searches, and appearing on some best-seller lists seems to target books dealing with gay, lesbian and trans themes, and no not all of them are even “dirty”. Take for example the following from Meta Writer who seems as of last night had compiled a list of the books affected :

The Advocate College Guide for LGBT Students

http://www.amazon.com/Advocate-College-Guide-LGBT-Students/dp/155583857X/

No protagonist, but intended for LGBT college-bound students.
(Sales rank removed)

Robert Adrich Who’s Who in Gay and Lesbian History (amazon.ca)
(Sales rank removed)

Really these are offensive perhaps? Adult?

Here are some other books impacted: “Heather Has Two Mommies”, A Biography of Ellen Degeneres,

Oh just to show that they are equal opportunity haters and that Amazon doesn’t think disabled peeps should be getting down: “The Ultimate Guide to Sex And Disability” has been stripped of its sales ranking.

No se, some of it seems random and not unified pero it still feels dangerous especially since Playboy books and a book about porno guy Ron Jeremy still have their sales ranks up as do hateful books like “A Parent’s Guide to Preventing Homosexuality”. Certain glbt films/dvds still have sales rankings.

Amazon is saying that the stripping of sales ranking, which impacts searchability and therefore accessibility is a “glitch”, one that has been going on since at least February according to some. More likely is that this is a result of some organized “pro-family” orgs who have been complaining to Amazon via flagging certain titles.

Stopping ICE for the Sake of the Census

12:23 pm By Maegan la Mamita Mala · Immigration|Media|Politics · Comments Off

iceThe idea of a federal anyone knocking on doors in our communities causes fear. With people of color communities targeted disproportionately by various Federal law enforcement agencies, undocumented families are especially wary of opening their doors with no signs from the Obama administration that Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids will stop. Pero how then do we accurately count how many people are in the United States?

U.S. Rep. William Clay (D.-Mo.), chairman of the House Subcommittee on Information Policy, Census and National Archives, “said he plans to ask the Obama administration to suspend immigration raids over the next year,” Fox News reported. “He wants the raids put on hold so illegal immigrants don’t worry that sharing accurate information with Census workers could somehow expose them to punishment, even deportation.”

One of the reasons I watch Spanish language news show like Al Punto is because weeks before the mainstream English language media will pick up on stuff, the Spanish language media is being used to talk to Latinos in the U.S. Weeks before this lawmaker made his statement, the U.S. government was using the Spanish language media to tell Latinos, immigrants especially, that the Census would not 1: be asking about immigration status and 2: sharing information with other agencies including the IRS and ICE.

My position on the immigrant detention and ICE raids is clear. They need to stop and not just so the Feds can have an idea of how many people live in the U.S., pero more importantly, because if Obama is serious about this, then real change needs to happen in an atmosphere without fear.

Jesus Loves You (and Condoms)

Remember the Pope’s statements about how condoms are bad? How they are only making the AIDS epidemic worse? Well his C-level supervisor doesn’t agree. Jesus Christ shows the Pope who’s boss in this hilarious video which answers the question “what would Jesus do?”

Angie Zapata was a transgender woman who was brutally murdered in Colorado last year. Next week, her killer goes to trial, and an online campaign by ProgressNow Colorado is encouraging us to remember Angie’s life and death at this difficult time.

Light a Candle for Angie is a Facebook application designed to draw attention to the issue of hate crimes. If you are a Facebook member, why not join the iniative?

If you are a Twitter member, you can follow all of the activities around the online campaign by adding Justice for Angie, or searching #zapata for other online conversations around anti-hate activism in Angie’s name.

It’s refreshing to once again see social media sites being used for something more than just entertainment. These applications’ ability to bring people together also have great potential to harness the power of many to bring much needed attention to serious social issues such as hate crimes, which I hope will eventually bring about policy change.

W.W.J.T? What Would Jesus Tweet?

thumbnailaspxI’ll be walking the Stations of the Cross in my hood later today pero turns out I can keep my ass in front of the computer and remember the Passion of the Christ.

In a marriage of Christian tradition and digital technology, Wall Street’s Trinity Church is using the micro-blogging service Twitter to perform the story of Jesus Christ.

The main characters will tweet the Passion play for three hours beginning at noon on Good Friday. The feed also can be delivered to mobile devices or e-mail addresses.

The lower Manhattan Episcopal parish also is offering a Web version of the Stations of the Cross.

So is this sacrilege or is it keeping up with the times?

Honestly, nobody knows WTF is going on!

10:33 am By la Macha · Immigration · Comments Off

So VL told you yesterday that Obama was going to tackle this immigration thing fairly quickly–and then today comes the message that–well, no he’s not.

While it’s a top priority for the president’s first term, White House spokesman Nick Shapiro says “the president has consistently said that he wants to start the discussion later this year because our immigration system is broken … but the economy comes first.”

The White House insisted that Thursday’s New York Times story reporting that President Obama would start addressing immigration “isn’t news.” Administration officials say the president previously told members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce that he’s always planned to start discussions on immigration reform this year.

“There are a lot of things on his plate and a lot of pressing issues relating to the economy. I don’t think he expects that it will be done this year,” White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Thursday.

On the one hand, this is really irritating. I’m sick and tired of immigration reform always being cast aside, especially when horrible things like ICE raids keep happening and community members continue to live in fear.

But at the same time, in many ways, I also don’t understand the huge rush to get things done that many immigration rights groups engage in. It often feels to me like they are pushing to get things “done” so quickly that they are actually willing to concede far more than what anybody is asking for in the name of “quick.” For example, during the last immigration rounds, I know many immigration rights groups were really pushing for the proposed legislation, even though the legislation came with heavy fines nobody that I know of could actually afford to pay.

So it may actually be a mixed blessing that this legislation is going to take a while to come to fruition. It gives on the ground workers more time to mobilize and pull people/organizations together. I just hope that organizations look at this delay in the same way and take it as an opportunity to get behind the scenes work done!

Teabagging the U.S. Government

Any really good properly dirty minded queer knows what teabagging is. Which is why I was pleased to see that Rachel Maddow got on her mocking shoes last night and delved in to the morass of old white men and proceeded to mock with all the innuendos at her power.

It’s like sex for me. I do feel better about the morass of old white men, I really really do.

But apparently it’s only worth a ten second mention by the media? Check this out:

Thanks for the update MSNBC. Very helpful. /snark
