Republican Congresswoman: Matthew Shepard Case “a Hoax”

In 1998, Wyoming college student Matthew Shepard was brutally murdered for being gay, drawing attention to the problem of hate crimes against LGBT people in this country and becoming a catalyst for much needed hate crime legislation. Since then, the Shepard case has been a cultural reference point both in the good and the bad sense; hate mongers like Fred Phelps have used Shepard as the target of their disgusting campaigns, and the general public has become more aware of hate crimes as a result of this much-publicized crime.

We all know this brutal murder was a hate crime. But one Republican Congresswoman, Rep. Virginia Foxx of North Carolina, wants you think otherwise. Check out her speech on the subject in the video above.

Might this be a good example of the reasons why Senator Arlen Specter believes his party has moved too far to the right?

Angry? Give Rep. Foxx a call and tell her so: DC office Phone: (202) 225-2071 NC District office: Toll Free: 1(866) 677-8968 Phone: (828) 265-0240

Rep. Foxx,

I hope you will be reading these comments. You have hurt and outraged people by your venomous statements.

It is so heartbreaking that you chose to make those statements with Mathew’s momther present. It is outrageous that you are so misinformed about the case. Perhaps you will consider not using your ignorance as an excuse to promote hatred and homophobia. You said way more about yourself than you could’ve ever said about Mathew. I hope that you and others like you will become introspective about why you give yourself permission to promote your bigoted agenda and usually under the guise of Christianity. There is no way Jesus would judge someone the way that you did. Please heal your heart so that you can be loving and tolerant. The law that you voted down was to protect others from those just like you–the very reason we need the law.

Vicki,

Seriously now, if the bleeding heart liberals would just do their job and enforce existing laws the premise of your argument would be mute. Murder is murder. All murder is a hate crime. Murderer’s should forfeit their own life for the crime of murder. Why would you need to differentiate between “types” of murder if people were truly punished for this henous crime?

I am sick and tired of this “flavor of the month” legislation from our elected representatives. It has nothing to do with them doing their jobs, everything to do with looking “PC” and pandering to their constuencies.

Also Vicki, I agree our God is love, but he’s much much more than this. You would have be naive to think other wise. Go read your bible, THE WHOLE BIBLE. Justice is the foundation of His throne. He MUST judge sin or he would not be God (this applies to all my screw ups as well as yours and everyone else’s). Thats why we all need Christ for our savior – there is no other way to come to the Father but by him, his only begotten Son. Jesus came the first time to tell the good news, to be the lamb for us all, slain from the foundation of the world. The next time Jesus comes HE WILL JUGDE THE WORLD. He is the lion and the lamb. If that doesnt give you a sense of urgency, in a world rapidly in decline, I dont know what will.

This is my first time at this site and thanks for allowing me to share my thoughts.

Respectfully, Otis

Otis,

God does judge sin, that’s a fact, but he does not judge the sinner. How can you sit there and proclaim that people need to read the entire bible, when you seem to have forgotten that, “Judge, and you shall be judged.” God judges sin, not the sinner. That’s his job, not ours.
