Today you can have a pedacito de Puerto Rico in your pocket via a quarter featuring the U.S. colony. I first learned about this um honor via Bianca Laureano.
As you can see from the image, the back of the new quarter features an historic sentry box and a hibiscus flower with the inscriptions, PUERTO RICO and Isla del Encanto. The sentry box and walls that are depicted on the quarter are probably one of the most recognized symbols of Puerto Rico and highlight the islands strength and rich heritage . The design was originally commissioned by the past Govenor Aníbal Acevedo-Vilá.
Apparently Ricans are expected to be excited by this token especially because originally only U.S. States were to be featured on the new U.S. quarters pero now U.S. Territories including P.R., Guam and Washington D.C. will also have their own coins.
Yeah so spend U.S. money Ricans. Just don’t expect the vote.
Ain’t democracy grand?

Puerto Rico had its own currency (and many other rights) back in 1898, yet everyone applauds this peseta as the greatest gesture of “equality” the USA has given us; big deal.

Hope it is a sign for equality!… yeah , we should have a quarter!
But we are still treated like Second class American citizens with no right to VOTE for their president and NO VOTES or equal representation in Congress!…
That’s not riqht, USA! God bless Obama!
Hope OBAMA fix what Bush broke and what was broken already!

dont believe the hype! any Puerto Rican that thinks this signifies equality is a very ignorant individual and needs to educate him/herself.in order for Puerto Ricans to really be proud we need to be freed from the clutches of the imperialistic colonial rule of the usa and become a free and sovereign nation. DESPIERTA BORICUA!!!!!!!!

This coin represents colonialism. Puerto Rico’s colonial case needs to be heard at the United Nations General Assembly.

Stupids separatist. Why dont you quit using american money and start using malanga y platana as currency. Hate you guys. Hipocritas. Charlatanes. Mamaos. Puerto Rico without USA is a stinky island with no future. Love my USA. I’m an american who happens to be puertorican. Why dont you quit using the dollar and stop aplying to federal aids and loans. If you want to go to college pay it. Chorros de HP les deseo lo peor y a su legado. Malditos sean.

Puerto Ricans are US citizens regardless of being born in either place. PR is not a race it is a culture. And all people should be proud, and be allowed to be proud of that. Everyting else is politics and a waste of time.

This peseta (quarter) only shows that some Puerto Ricans are very proud of being under a colonial rule, that is a sad thing because it shows a terrible lack of self esteem and a sick complex of inferiority. I will celebrate the day Puerto Rico has it’s own coin with the word ‘Pan, Tierra y Libertad’ inscripted in spanish and the figure of Luis Muñoz Marín, Emeterio Betances or Jose M. de Hostos in the front side. The rest, it is pure colonialism like someone said here before. Puerto Rico needs to be sovereign, our past governor Acevedo Vila is correct : Soberania!.

Correction: It is not a “hibiscus flower”. It is a Maga flower. From a tree. They look VERY similar but are not the same. One is a bush the other a tree.

Prefiero la estadidad ya que los americanos siempre nos han ayudado.
Puerto Rico esta pasando por una gran crisis economica y la gente lo que hace es criticar. Dejen de estar criticando ustedes no nos pagan ni un centavo.
