Single moms=”broken”?

madonna No, I’m not the biggest fan in the world of white celebrities adopting brown babies from across the world. I think it’s shady on so many levels–and what the hell is wrong with foster care? They are some of the few people who actually have the resources and time to make it all the way through a foster adoption, it doesn’t make sense to me why they feel they need to go outside of their own countries to adopt.

Having said that, I read about Madonna’s attempts to adopt again with interest. Apparently, her newly single status is causing problems for her:

Madonna’s trying to adopt another baby, a little girl named Mercy, from Malawi, but may have a tougher time without Guy Ritchie at her side. “Our official policy is that we do not encourage our children to be sent into broken homes,” a senior official from Malawi’s Ministry of Women and Child Welfare Development said. “Her relationships may negatively affect the adoption of Mercy.”

And of course the LA Times blurb follows up with a swipe at single mother Nadya Suleman.

What about going after one of Nadya Suleman’s little ones?

It’s interesting how this small blurb juxtaposes so much of U.S. cultures biases against single mothers. Single mothers are always suspect and wrong, but some single mothers invoke sympathy in their “wrongness” and others don’t. It’s interesting how the single mother’s that invoke sympathy are invariably well-off and white.

I’m probably the only person in the world not impressed by Angelina Jolie and her worldwide adoptions (and other celebrities like Madonna as well). There are plenty of children in this country of every race, mixed race, age, and a vast array of ethnicity, etc that are begging for a family. By adopting in the US these children are not being taken from their original culture (they’re growing up in the US no matter what) and how about adopting an older child or a special needs child? These celebrities certainly have the money to take care of these childrens’ needs and they could be a great spokesperson to the public on the joys and the chalenges of raising these kids.

I couldn’t agree more Gena–many people have been trolling this post calling me a racist, but it’s not so much that I am against interracial adoptions (although I do have problems with it, especially in the case of Native Americans being adopted by non-natives), it’s more that there are children here in the U.S. (or in Britian or wherever the celebrity is from) who are in desperate need of homes and aren’t being adopted because the “normal” people in these countries simply don’t have the resources (or *think* they don’t have the resources) to adopt or even bring into foster care. And I agree totally that these celebrities *do* have the resources, and could be amazing spokespeople for navigating the foster care system–while either advocating for improvements or showing that it’s not that difficult, or both.

I don’t really understand why it’s necessary to go through transnational adoptions except that way the mother can’t come back in three years and say I’m cleaned up, I want my kid back. which is really kind of shitty, because that means what these celebrities are doing is preying on the weakest most disempowered mothers out there so that *their* status as mothers are never challenged….

Nope not the only person Gena. I worry about all these wealthy white celebs swooping into third world countries and picking up children.
