While some people downplay the brutal beating suffered by pop star Rihanna at the hands of her boyfriend Chris Brown, one organization is looking to make an example of it.

Non-profit organization DoSomething has taken the transcript of Rihanna’s declaration to police after the beating and used it, word by word, to re-enact the incident in a PSA in an effort to warn teens about the dangers of dating abuse. Check out the video above and let us know what you think.

biggest question–why did they switch to white actors? a black woman getting beaten doesn’t inspire anger?

not impressed.

also, why is a man narrating a woman’s experience?

the whole thing is just confusing. I don’t like it. I think it’s exploitative.

It can go both way’s macha. Let’s say it was a black actress, someone might say that “what only black women get abused?”. Maybe they would say “Seems to me like they’re trying to insinuate that white women don’t get abused”. I would agree that it’s confusing. If it’s a reenactment they should make it as close to the real thing as possible, In regards to the actors and such.

I, agree Mario–I betcha that’s why they used white actors–because they thought they would get accused of racism or something. that’s the trouble with co-opting somebody’s real life experience to make your own damn point, you know? not many ways you can do that right.

I had been meaning to watch this and I have to echo la Macha’s sentiments. Violence against women is presented through a white woman’s lens and denies the very real experience of women of color. Switching the race of the actors allows for communities to go along with the “lippy woman” justification among others. It allows violence against women of color to be othered and again makes women of color invisible. I guess if every woman isn’t Rihanna, we aren’t worth making PSA’s for.

The reason they used white actors is simple, it’s called “Political Correctness”. They were obviously scarred of being called racists. That’s the aburdity of our modern society.
