aleqm5ju_4eh4du9r9t5xsbw7sy6wydieaIt’s about time! Arizona’s Maricopa County’s Sheriff Joe Arpaio has been officially put on notice, on notice that his actions and the actions conducted in the police department he ran are under investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice.

From Latino Politico:

The U.S. Justice Department has launched a civil-rights investigation of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office after months of mounting complaints that deputies are discriminating in their enforcement of federal immigration laws.

Officials from the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division notified Sheriff Joe Arpaio on Tuesday that they had begun the investigation, which will focus on whether deputies are engaging in “patterns or practices of discriminatory police practices and unconstitutional searches and seizures.”
An expert said it is the department’s first civil-rights probe related to immigration enforcement.

One of the things that can happen in such an investigation is that the police department can be put under the guidance of the Department of Justice until certain changed are made.

Pero the investigation is just the start, it’s not a victory. We still need to put the pressure on the DOJ and the U.S. government as a whole so that we move away from enforcement first immigration policies to policies that put the human rights of people first.

I was dumbstruck after listening to last week’s episode of Chicago Public Radio’s This American Life program this morning. The episode featured a story so Kafkaesque I first doubted its veracity and then just sat shocked. It’s simple enough to sum up in just a few words: the New York City Public School system sends teachers who “misbehave” or are suspected of having done something wrong to what amounts to detention hall for teachers. Teachers are told they will be going to a “reassignment center” and when they arrive, wait to meet with district authorities.

But there will never be a meeting. The teachers sit in rooms for hours doing nothing. Those hours turn in to weeks. Weeks into months for most. And for some into a year or more than one year. Doing nothing.

A culture emerges within this confinement. It is reported by those who have been in what is called “the rubber room” – the informal name for the facility — that the overwhelming boredom and depression felt by the teachers translates into childlike behavior, violent fights and territorial squabbles. In effect, they become a lot like children in detention.

Teachers awaiting their fate — a decision by the NYC school system on whether they will be reinstated and return to teaching or terminated — continue to earn their full salary, even though they are doing absolutely nothing in the rubber room day in and day out. The estimated cost to NYC taxpayers? Some 35 million dollars per year. Read more…

If you are in the Chicago area, I strongly recommend making it out to this event or otherwise showing support for it!

“Amor sin fronteras” or “Love Without Borders” is this year’s theme for the only prom for and by LGBT youth in the Chicago area. Queer Prom 2009 will take place on May 29th at the National Museum of Mexican Art.

“We want to provide a feeling of community, an event that identifies the Latin@ community, the gay community and Pilsen as a neighborhood…I think a lot times a young gay person, especially in schools in La Villita [a predominantly Mexican neighborhood] feel isolated from the gay community. The only thing they know is Boystown [a predominantly gay white male neighborhood in Chicago], clubs and the commercial aspects of being gay. We mean to connect them to another aspect of the community, ” said Tania Unzueta, Coordinator of Queer Prom 2009.

Queer Prom is more than just a party. The coordinators and attendees feel that they are uniting to celebrate their common experiences, “How beautiful to gay! How beautiful to be Latin@!,” Unzueta finalizes. For more information about Queer Prom 2009 visit www.wrte.org/homofrecuencia or call 312-455-9455 x203.

In case you haven’t heard, resident comedian, Jon Stewart, has decided to take on Jim Cramer. Who the hell is Jim Cramer, you ask? Apparently he is a financial guru of some sort who has made a name off of screwing things up nice and tidy like:

An introduction:

And the hostility just isn’t ending. Last night Stewart aired the following clip. Watch out for how Latin@s make an appearance!

Ai, Latin@s in the house, my friends. ::teary eyed::

On a more serious note, never underestimate how satisfying the “P” word really can be!

E-Verify to be Extended Until End of September

everifypstr-engYesterday, after my post on the latest scapegoating efforts of anti-immigrant forces, Mario asked a good question about E-Verify, a voluntary internet-based program intended to allow employers to electronically verify the information that workers present to prove their employment eligibility by accessing information in databases maintained by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Social Security Administration (SSA).

As we told you earlier this year,
E-Verify is expensive and not accurate. One test of the program by Intel Corporation in 2008 had 13% of the employees unverifiable by the system even though all the employees were legally eligible to work. Despite the problems, a spending bill approved yesterday would extend it’s use through September 30th.

What a waste of much needed money.
