I saw this film in 07 when it made its debut at the Sandance film festival in UT-It was well received but not to a significant degree.
The buzz afterwards was the apparent lack of interest by major distributors.
Due to its topic/content, there was some interest- but the film’s potential for marketability for any significant commercial success seems limited, even today, though the whole Latino angle creates some market appeal, as well as the whole Dominican baseball piece.
The film, by the way, is a free flowing documentary about a Dominican Baseball player nicknamed, Sugar, as we follow his trials and challenges to achieve the Dominican baseball player’s big dream:making it to the American majors. Kind of dull in some places and heavy handed in others, overall the film can be sleep inducing, but it provides keen insight into what it is like as we watch this real life saga unfold right before us as we witness and vicariously share in his failures, successes, and challenges to reach that American dream.
Does the saga end on a positive note? You must see it to make that determination on your own. If you can find it. I am really surprised to see Sony Pictures carrying the title, though I have not seen it at any of the major market theaters or art houses. Perhaps the thinking is to put finances behind it with a solid advertising budget and release it in the major Dominican markets (NYC, RI, etc) in time for the baseball season openings this year.

I’m curious to see how the film handles the racial issue of Dominicans. The trailer sort of hints that it does pero you never know.
Gracias Julio for the insight. Hopefully I’ll check it our for myself soon.
