Obama Flubs Oath, Experts Call for Re-Do

Is this for real? I mean it was Roberts’ fault anyway (by the way: didn’t he look smug up there?) for mixing up the words on him!

The 35-word oath is explicitly prescribed in the Constitution, Article II, Section 1, which begins by saying the president “shall” take the oath “before he enter on the execution of his office.”

The oath reads: “I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of president of the United States and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

In giving the oath, Roberts misplaced the word “faithfully,” at which point Obama paused quizzically. Roberts then corrected himself, but Obama repeated the words as Roberts initially said them.

A do-over “would take him 30 seconds, he can do it in private, it’s not a big deal, and he ought to do it just to be safe,” said Boston University constitutional scholar and Supreme Court watcher Jack Beermann. “It’s an open question whether he’s president until he takes the proper oath.”

He “misplaced” a word and so he’s not really the president? This is the kind of bullshit that makes people like me poo-poo this ritualistic protocol stuff. Boo!

gdt_400.jpgMexican super director Guillermo Del Toro, auteur of such hits as Hellboy and Pan’s Labyrinth, might be a proud member of Los Tres Amigos crew of south of the border filmmakers, but his sentiments about returning to his native land are mixed. Del Toro, who lives between New Zealand and Los Angeles, says he’s basically an involuntary exile, as he fears for his safety in Mexico. Reports The New York Daily News:

“Hellboy” director Guillermo del Toro says he is unlikely to make another film in Mexico because his father’s kidnapping 10 years ago left him fearing for his safety, a newspaper has reported.

Del Toro’s father was eventually released, but the family says it later received death threats.

Del Toro, who is best known for directing the “HellBoy” movies and “Pan’s Labyrinth,” said he doesn’t feel safe directing films here because his daily routine becomes public.

“Not all of the people who participated in the kidnapping were captured,” El Universal newspaper on Thursday quoted him as saying.

He described his situation as a “forced exile” and said it saddens him to think he may never film again on Mexican streets.

I think many of us here at Vivir Latino have expressed at least some amount of ambiguity with President Obama and the inauguration/election. On the one hand I was thrilled by Obama’s speech yesterday (the part about extending a hand if other’s hands were unclenched was especially nice), but on the other hand–well–a lot of the speech sounded so freaking familiar, it was rather frightening.

I really liked how Jon Stewart caught that sense of ambiguity–that sense of desperation, really–of so many of us.

How are you feeling on the first full day of President Obama? Do you like what he’s doing so far?

gitmo.jpgThe new Obama administration is making some positive moves already. President Obama ordered military prosecutors in the Guantanamo war crimes tribunals to ask for a 120-day halt in all pending cases and a judge granted the request on Wednesday in the case against a young Canadian.

When defense lawyers did not oppose the move, a judge froze the proceedings against Canadian Omar Khadr, who was captured at age 15 and is accused of murdering a U.S. soldier with a grenade during a firefight in Afghanistan.

Also potentially impacted is the death penalty case against five prisoners accused of plotting the September 11th 2001 plane attacks.

As I was rushing to an inauguration event yesterday, my best girl from high school, a NY Ecuadorian, sent me an email that asks many good questions and uses many ellipses.

I mean i get it… it’s historical and shit but damn it i feel like all this hoopla cuz he’s black is missing the point of having a black president to begin with. He should be treated like any other president… I’ve never heard of this many parties or concerts before… maybe they existed but the media is milking it and let’s face it… we don’t even know how he’ll be as a president!!! I mean i voted for him cuz he was a better candidate than the other guy.. NOT cuz of the color of his skin. I feel like people are making a bigger deal of his skin color than of the things that he’s gonna have to fix once he gets in office.

And people keep saying that this shows the world is changing… Sorry but I don’t think having Obama all the way in DC is gonna stop someone from killing our people on the streets… of stabbing someone cuz they look Mexican.. or Gay.. or whatever. Having a black president doesn’t make this less of a racist world. Why don’t people see that? I want to know what’s gonna happen after the parties…

I mean I understand the historical significance.. I got a little misty eyed myself when he won and I read his speech later… I do get it. but damn… this is all we need… white people already think we use any excuse to party…

and I’m venting to you cuz if I blogged about this it wouldn’t fit in between my corney baby pooping drama and I didn’t want to get hate comments. I sound like a crazy Obama hater… and i knew you wouldn’t leave me hate comments… so tell me… help me.. explain to me… cuz I can’t bring myself to care that Shakira sang with Stevie Wonder. I do care what’s gonna happen with me being so broke I can’t afford to buy pullups for my daughter… of people being overseas killing and dying…

Since we here at VL get so much hate mail anyway, I posted her email, with her permission porque well, she has a point, no?
