You are fat! And other So WHATS? of the world!
16 Jan 2009The latest ‘fattest cities’ list just came out and, as usual, my heart, Detroit, Michigan, is sitting right near the top of the list. Detroit alternates between being THE FATTEST and just plain old fat year after year.
My question: What the hell are we supposed to do with these lists?

16 Jan 2009Um, who is the hottest mama of them all? Salma, Salma, that’s my girl!!!
The part that I was able to pay attention to before I tuned out and focused on the lovely outfit, the beautiful hair, the great teeth, the flawless lips….mmmm…was the part where she said she was not hoping for a girl when she was pregnant.
Because she wanted to be close to her baby and she didn’t think she’d get that with a girl.
Er…talking to too many Mexican Mami’s these days, Ms. Salmita (for the uninitiated, Mexican mother’s are notorious for coddling their little boys, just ask George Lopez)?
That’s ok. I forgive her, because she has seen the errors of her ways and recognizes that little girls are not tarantulas or uni bombers–they are indeed, capable of loving and being close to other human beings! Hurray for little girls, and hooray for my Salmita!!!!
Rick Sanchez Responds to Joe The Plumber

I think my favorite part is the way Rick reads Joe the Plumber’s words like he is reading a See Jane Run book. Rick sure can be a snarky little thing when he wants to.
Driving While Black or Latino in NYC is Risky

Driving While Black or Driving While Brown has always been somewhat of a hazard, and depending on in what part of the country one happens to be driving, non-white drivers run the risk of getting stopped by cops. But where the stats on police stopping black or Latino drivers seems to be off the charts is our beloved New York City:
From 2005 to 2008, 80 percent of all traffic stops of New Yorkers involved black and Latino drivers, according to the report by the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR). That’s shocking, considering blacks and Latinos only account for 25 percent and 28 percent, respectively, of New York City’s population, CCR reported.By contrast, only 10 percent of traffic stops involved white drivers, who are 44 percent of the city’s population.
MSNBC reports that the arrest and summons rates for these drivers is extremely low “which suggests black and Latino drivers aren’t doing anything wrong at a higher rate than whites to justify being eight times more likely to get stopped.”

Vieques, Puerto Rico Calls for Peace in Palestine

The island of Vieques, part of Puerto Rico, is no stranger to being used as a colonial target. For almost 60 years, the island, whose economy is based on fishing, was used as a bombing range for live ammunition, shelling, strafing, and illegal chemicals such as napalm and depleted uranium, contributing to deaths, injuries and a cancer rate among Viequenses which is 26.9% higher than the rest of Puerto Rico, all thanks to the U.S. Navy.
Thanks to a huge grassroots movement, Vieques is no longer used for U.S. military experiments (although it’s future is still uncertain)and it from that history of struggle linked to a wider anti-colonial struggle that Vieques has expressed it’s solidarity with Palestine.

On Saturday, petitions were sent from Vieques to President Bush, President-Elect Obama and to Puerto Rico Governor Fortuño urging them to join the world-wide outcry for a cease fire in the Gaza Strip. The petitions were signed by almost 400 residents of Vieques in only 24 hours and express the solidarity of the people of Vie ques with the people of Palestine who are suffering a huge humanitarian crisis. During the last two weeks, more than 900 people have be en killed in Gaza, including more than 200 children; more than 4000 have been injured. More than 10 Israelis have died; some were soldiers killed by “friendly” fire.

Long Lines for SF Immigrant I.D. Card

In November 2007 Maegan told you that San Francisco had followed New Haven, Connecticut’s lead in approving I.D. cards for immigrants. Today, the reality of such a move manifested itself in long lines to get the cards:
Hundreds of people stood in line for hours at San Francisco City Hall on Thursday to be among the first in the nation to receive municipal identification cards regardless of their immigration status.The cards, also available in New Haven, Conn., and being considered in other cities, have sparked fury among advocates of stricter immigration laws. They argue cities have no business declaring people residents if they are not in the country legally.
But San Francisco officials and recipients of the cards hailed the new program as a way to connect undocumented immigrants with banks, businesses and city services, such as obtaining health care and checking out library books. They also said it will encourage card holders to report crimes to the police without fear of being arrested or deported.

Another Anti-Latino Hate Crime Hits the News Two Months After It Happened

16 Jan 2009On November 19th of last year, a 19 year old Latino male was was knocked unconscious and then repeatedly stomped and kicked in the head by individuals who allegedly have ties to a white supremacist gang. The unidentified young man has permanent brain damage and is now in a long term care facility. In other words, his life will never be the same. The attack, which was clearly attempted murder, happened in Hemet, California, an area that has had a growing white white supremacist activity.
Crystal Lee McCann, 22, Derek Shane O’Brien, 22 and Darrin Peter Thibault, 24, were arrested between Dec. 19 and Thursday in connection with the Nov. 14 beating of a 19-year-old Latino whose name has not been released.
Thibault, arrested Dec. 19, has been arraigned on charges of attempted murder, membership in a criminal gang and assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm, with gang, serious felony and great bodily injury allegations, according to court records.
McCann, arrested Dec. 26, has pleaded not guilty to attempting to dissuade a witness and gang allegations. She is to be arraigned Tuesday.
O’Brien was arrested Thursday on suspicion of attempted murder, violation of probation and membership in a criminal street gang. He is also to be arraigned Tuesday.
The first person arrested, Justin Tyme Hayes, 21, has been charged with attempted murder and participating in a criminal street gang, with serious felony, great bodily injury and gang activity allegations. He has pleaded not guilty.
