Prayer Poem for Gaza

2:40 pm By la Macha · Gaza · 10 Comments

From the always amazing Suheir Hammad, comes the following prayer poem for Gaza.

gaza

a great miracle happened here

a festival of lights

a casting of lead upon children

an army feasting on epiphany

i know nothing under the sun over the wall no one mentions

some must die wrapped in floral petroleum blanket

no coverage

i have come to every day armageddon

a ladder left unattended

six candles burn down a house

a horse tied to smoke

some must die to send a signal

flat line scream live stream river a memory longer than life spans

the living want to die in their country

no open doors no open seas no open

hands full of heart five daughters wrapped in white

each day jihad

each day faith over fear

each day a mirror of fire

the living want to die with their families

the girl loses limbs her brother gathers arms

some must die for not dying

children on hospital floor mother beside

them the father in shock this is my family

i have failed them this is my family i did

not raise their heads i have buried them

my family what will i do now my family is bread

one fish one people cut into pieces

there is a thirst thefts life

there is a hunger a winter within winter

some must die to bring salvation

i have come to end times always present

the woman lost parents her children and screams

my sister i have lost my sister i want to die

my sister’s eyes were honey her voice mine

i can’t face this only god only god my sister

medics killed schools hit convoys bombed

the injured are dying the dead are buried in three

hours the people pray together and curse the people

mourn loud and quiet always too loud not enough

some must die because they are the vicinity

some must die because it was written

no army does not apologize has never

apologized authority chases paper assembly

occupation settles deeper

a great miracle here

the living are dying and the dying living

a festival of lights

a strip a land a blaze

the sea a mirror of fire

a casting of lead upon children

their heads roll off their shoulders into streets

their tops spin in hands

an army feasting on epiphany

driving future into history

carrying torches into women

Transfers-Pinault1V.jpgAnd a very high-profile one at that. French Minister of Justice, Rachida Dati, has been keeping the identity of her baby daddy secret ever since she started showing, and since then rumors have been flying left and right as to who the papi is. The tabloid press swore that it was none other than French president Sarkozy, while others claimed it was Spanish president José María Aznar, as Dati remained tight-lipped. But now the press seems to believe they’ve solved the puzzle: the dad is Salma Hayek’s ex, Francois-Henri Pinault. Wowza!

Even though there had been little linking the pair, she confided: “I’m fed up with the rumours – during the whole summer they said that I was with Francois-Henri Pinault.”

A fortnight later, during a lunch between female government ministers organised by Interior Minister Michele Alliot-Marie, she added: “The father travels a lot.”

At the time, Mr Pinault was flying regularly from Paris to the States to see baby daughter Valentina, who lives with Hollywood star mum Salma.

OK, that sounds like a lame piece of proof. But this is a bit more juicy:

Brazillian Soccer Team to Go on Viagra

10:40 am By Maegan La Mala · Bizarro|Brazil|Drugs|Sports · Comments Off

You’ve heard of athletes using steroids to soup up their game, but what about Viagra? Well one Brazilian soccer team is about to get a prescription for the wonder drug, allegedly to help them fight the effects of altitude sickness. Yeah…

The possibility was admitted by the club’s doctor in the city of Porto Alegre, Alarico Endres, who has been studying if the blue pill might help oxygenization of the blood in athletes and help reduce the effects of altitude.

According to Endres, some specialists believe that the remedy used by men with erectile problems can benefit athleses who need better blood oxygenization in adverse conditions.

“Based on assumptions we won’t do anything, but if research shows scientifically that Viagra improves performance in [high] altitude, we can offer it to players,” said Endres.

I don’t want to think about the atmosphere in the locker room after one of these “altitude” treatments. Look what happens in the commercial when only ONE person is on the stuff!

Stone is working on a film about the Venezuelan president and was interviewing Morales.

Also, it just came through the Twittersphere that Morales is cutting diplomatic relations with Israel over what is happening in Gaza. More details as they come in.

BART Officer Who Killed Oscar Grant has been Arrested

8:35 am By Maegan La Mala · Justice|oakland · Comments Off

mn-insight11_sfg_0499637262_part1.jpgJohannes Mehserle, the BART Officer who shot and killed unarmed Oscar Grant on New Year’s day on a platform in Oakland, was arrested yesterday in Nevada on suspicion of murder.

Claro this is important because it is rare that a law enforcement officer is arrested for killing a person of color. Pero, a arrest does not justice make. We have to be cautious and not allow BART, officials, and the media to play the one bad apple song, that Mehserle wasn’t part of a system that devalues the lives of people of color. That this was an isolated incident. That it won’t happen again.

We cannot expect for the same system that imprisons our community in disproportionate numbers to be the source of justice for Oscar Grant.

There will be a rally and march this afternoon in Oakland. Information after the jump.
