Nestle’s Nod to Immigration in Navidad

25 Dec 2008

This commercial isn’t new, but I thought you readers would like to see how Nestle’s La Lechera markets to consumers in Mexico. Here’s a curious nod to U.S.-Mexico immigration guaranteed to tug at your heartstrings…or at least at your gut. The sickeningly sweet tone of this ad can only be topped by the sickening sweetness of La Lechera itself. Enjoy…and Felíz Navidad!

ElSalvador.gifIn exactly a week, the last Latin American country with troops in Iraq will withdraw.

According to remarks made yesterday by Salvadoran President Tony Saca, troops will withdraw from the country on December 31st. “Considering the lack of a United Nations resolution, the government of El Salvador decided to end our presence in Iraq,” Saca said.

Other Latin American nations that used to have troops in Iraq were Honduras, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic.

The Salvadorian contingent is made up of 200 soldiers. In the five years since the Salvadorian troops have been stationed, five soldiers have been killed.

Or at least that’s what this genius commercial would have you believe. It appears that this little one has her heart set on a Plumrose ham — nothing more, nothing less. Ah, if only kids in the States were that easy to please.

Afro-Colombians being evicted and displaced in Colombia

1:27 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Colombia · Comments Off

23 Dec 2008

mbiaevictions.jpg The BBC has a devastating story of how Afro-Colombian’s are treated in Colombia–namely massive evictions and displacements to make room for palm oil plantations:

Take Yajaira, a slender 18-year-old, one of four children whose family was displaced from a settlement in the Cacarica river basin just south of Colombia’s border with Panama.

She misses her place of origin deeply.

“My home was surrounded by banana and mango trees, and coconut palms,” she recalls, fingering a bracelet she wears made of seeds and feathers gathered in tropical forests.

“We used to bathe and fish in a nearby stream.”

According to the BBC, many (of not most or all) of the displaced peoples wind up in shanty towns–which of course–are not surrounded by trees and streams that are clean enough to fish and bathe in. Does race have anything to do with the evictions? According to one of the displaced people, “We are displaced, we are black and we are poor.”

So, in other words, when there’s money to be made through a lucrative business–who cares about a few poor black people who have to move into shanty towns, right?

2008_12_hirmm.jpgI have been reluctant to comment on the current legal and personal problems of my local NYC Councilperson and soon to be NY State Senator Hiram Monserrate. Last week, Monseratte was arrested on domestic violence charges against his girlfriend, Karla Giraldo, after he brought her to a hospital miles away from their home with a black eye and a gash that required 20 stitches to close.

The story gets sketchy after that. Monseratte has been charged with felony assault and insists that he tripped and fell with a glass in his hand. Others are saying that there was a struggle after Monseratte found “drugs” in Giraldo’s purse. There is even talk in the media about Monseratte being a Scientologist.

OMG HE’S NOT WEARING A SHIRT!

12:33 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · US Presidential Race 2008 · Comments Off

23 Dec 2008

obama.jpg

So, yet again, the media is all in a tither over teh naked. This time, it’s Mr. Obama’s naked torso that is being splashed everywhere. He and the family were on a trip to Hawai’i and (gasp) went swimming and (gasp) put on a bathing suits (how unuuuuuuuusual)! OMG it’s teh NAKEDNESS!

In all seriousness, Obama is looking like he’s doing some flexes or something. Compare that picture to his one taken during the election season.

Oh, also, there are shots of Obama’s girls in these groups of photos–and seeing as they are not public figures or adults, the press needs to back the hell off.

But that’s just my opinion. And who am I but La Macha?
