Al Punto con Jorge Ramos is my favorite Sunday morning show. Not because I particularly like Ramos pero he does have some good interview subjects. Yesterday morning he interviewed Calle 13. and I thought that I couldn’t love Residente y Visitante more than I did, pero I now do.
The conversation on the Univision news/talk show, was more about politics than music and I appreciate the fact that Calle 13 didn’t shy away from their opinions.
On the issue of Puerto Rico and it’s status, both René Pérez Joglar and Eduardo José Cabra Martínez said they thought Puerto Rico should be a free country able to make decisions on who and how it trades. Both also stated that they saw themselves as Puerto Ricans before U.S. citizens.
They talks about their controversial songs, like Querido FBI, saying that they make danceable songs to appeal to a wide, mass audience, then bring more political messages in a new and more accessible way to that same audience.
When pressed by Jorge Ramos about their recent visit with controversial Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, Residente said that the visit was connected to his father’s role in helping the Sandinista’s during the Civil War and to visit a historical figure.
