World AIDS Day : Latinos and AIDS

In the United States, recently released statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that Latinos are disproportionately affected by the HIV virus. Latinos rank second among ethnic groups most at risk, and although we are 15 percent of the population, we accounted for 19 percent of new AIDS cases diagnosed in 2006.

There are an estimated 200,000 Latinos in the United States living with AIDS and millions more who are indirectly affected by the disease. According to the CDC, AIDS is claiming the lives of Latinos at four times the rate of the general U.S. population.

Have you been tested? Why or why not?

Catching up on Salma Mondays

My Salma was seen recently, sporting a fabulous blue dress, at the CNN “Heros” award show.

And apparently, I was not the only one thrilled by the way blue material has a way of disappearing when it’s most necessary to disappear:

Alec Baldwin had a good time with “30 Rock” guest Jennifer Aniston, but she’s not his favorite.

That honor belongs to Salma Hayek, who will play his character’s love interest in five upcoming episodes.

“She was literally the most fabulous woman that I’ve ever worked with,” Baldwin told People.com. And, at Sunday night’s CNN “Heroes” tribute award show, Hayek was quick to return the praise.

I would like it to be known right now–I can and will take on Mr. “You’re a Pig” Alec Baldwin. I’ve already defeated stronger better fighters than him.

Anything for my Salmita and her blue dresses…

cut-finger.jpgIn case you didn’t notice, my dear VLatin@s, I (la Macha), have been outta commission since last Wednesday due to a badly hurt finger. Well, my finger is mostly healed (I will be going to the doctor later to have her officially declare it “ok”) and I am ready to go again!

I want to extend a deep well of love to Mamita for picking up my slack while I was gone–I deeply appreciate her love and support!

In the Dominican Republic there are 1033 children registered as having HIV. The grandmother of one of these children, 2 year old “Mariano”, says that one of the hardest things to deal with is the discrimination her grandson faces.

[My translation] With tears in her eyes, the boy’s grandmother, Doña Maria, tells that the hardest thing is the discrimination and the rejection. “It hurts me because in my neighborhood, the neighbors know my son died of AIDS and they don’t like for my grandson to play with their children, and that’s why I don’t even want to send him to school

World AIDS Day

aids-day-graffiti-istanbul.jpgToday marks the 20th annual World AIDS Day as founded by the World Health Organization with the goal of raising awareness. This year’s theme is “Lead, Empower & Deliver.”

33 million people are still living with the virus and there are nearly 7,500 new infections each day.

Within the Latino community and in Latin America, HIV and AIDS continues to be an issue that is talked about and dealt with in hushed whispers while the virus screams through our communities. Machismo and internalized stereotypes lead many to believe that they can’t contract HIV, that they don’t need to be tested, that they don’t need to take precautions. Those living with HIV and AIDS in our community struggle to survive in a system that doesn’t value Latino lives as much as other lives anyway.

Today, all the posts will focus on an aspect of HIV and AIDS in the Latino and Latin American community, including statistics, stories, events, and the points of views of other Latino bloggers.

Pero as with all “days”, it’s important to note that these issues need to be discussed everyday without the need of a special day of recognition, especially since for those living with HIV and AIDS, they don’t get to take a day off.

Calle13.pngAl Punto con Jorge Ramos is my favorite Sunday morning show. Not because I particularly like Ramos pero he does have some good interview subjects. Yesterday morning he interviewed Calle 13. and I thought that I couldn’t love Residente y Visitante more than I did, pero I now do.

The conversation on the Univision news/talk show, was more about politics than music and I appreciate the fact that Calle 13 didn’t shy away from their opinions.
