Here in the United States no one stampedes for tickets to a telethon. Hell does anyone even watch the telethon? In Chile, however, the annual Teletón for disabled children is a cultural phenomenon. Stores all over the capital transform into collection spots for donations. Families make homemade banners to hang in their front window to tell everyone that they are supporting the Teletón and they mean it. Families sit in front of the television, not that there is anything else to watch if your don’t have cable or satellite tv. There is even a nationwide tour, featuring everyone’s favorite dirty old man, Don Francisco and if you think that people don’t pack the streets and the seats, you are very wrong.
I won’t even get into the politics of a once a year celebration of disability while the rest of the year the issue and the people are ignored. What the Teletón has become since it started in 1978 (under the Pinochet dictatorship) is an extension of nationalism. If you don’t support the Teleton, you must hate Chile is the message. Pero in recent years, in order to keep it’s popularity, the Teletón is using sex and Ricans.
This year the lure is simulated sex a la reggaeton which apparently is still the rage in Chile. Yesterday at el Estadio Nacional de Santiago, at least 8 people were injured when a stampede ensued as people tried to score free tickets to a Teletón event that includes Daddy Yankee and Wisin y Yandel.

I remember the Teleton hype. We were in Chile in 79 or 80. My brother and I memorized the Teleton song and all of the product ads on tv. I still hear “Aceite Chef, esta en la teleton” in my head whenever I shop for oil! EVERYONE watched that program. Does Don Francisco still host it? I think he hosted it back then.

Im currently watching the closure of this years teleton; and yes. Don Francisco is still the host and probably will be for many years to come.
In my opinion i must say i agree with the author of this article in the fact that they have been incorporating this sex reggaeton propaganda to magnify the popularity and increase the sales of tickets for the show…. But remember that now a days is easier to reach the youth of our society when we relate with them with such actions as a sexy dance of sort.
is it manipulation? duh, do we have a choice…. dont think so, if someone has a better idea…..we are all ears… but life is what it is….
Yes Don Francisco will keep on hosting the event for many years to come, and yes they’ll keep on using the sexy girls on short skirts….and people will keep on going to the event year after year and make donations….. but the whole point is the system has work so far… kids are being treated all though chile, new facillities are being open every year and so on….
i can honestly say that as long as it keeps on going as good as it has so far….. i couldn’t care less for the rest.
