A Los Angeles-area McCain supporter has removed a Halloween effigy of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama hanging from her balcony with a giant butcher knife through its neck.

Lisa Castañeda of Redondo Beach put up the blood-covered figure on Wednesday. A placard read “Nobama.”

Emotions stirred in a Redondo Beach neighborhood Wednesday when a resident hung an effigy of Sen. Barack Obama from her balcony with a meat cleaver slashed through his throat as a Halloween display.

“I disapprove of him, period,” she said. “I am appalled by a man who is so close to being our president who won’t put his hand on the Bible, who won’t wear a flag pin.”

Castaneda included the effigy in a larger Halloween display and says she didn’t mean to be racist or offensive. But the display drew immediate criticism and she took it down Wednesday night at the request of a McCain campaign representative.

Ha! VL hasn’t endorsed a candidate except to not vote for McCain! Funny!

Seriously though…what is with people? One of my mom’s co-worksers says she doesn’t want to vote for Obama because he doesn’t wear a flag pin or salute the flag. Aside fromt he fact that I have seen him do both, to me, real patriotism is how you treat yourself and others and what you do to ensure a better country and world through your social activism and political policies.

It just makes me wonder if these aren’t really excuses to hide the real truth…not wanting to vote for a black man.

I’m totally with you–the ugliness that this election has brought out in the form of racism, sexism, nationalism…ugh. I guess it’s good that it’s kinda staring us all in the face now so we can’t really ignore it anymore, but I’m SO tired of waking up to these news stories.

Mhm. I don’t doubt for a minute that this woman is seriously feeling some of the black/mexican tension–I also wonder how much of this is a sign of her assimilation experience–I know a *lot* of really conservative Mexicans/Latin@s that look at Obama and feel threatened because of how his ’story’ messes around with the assimilationist “be grateful for any scrape they offer you” experience. He’s not grateful enough in their eyes, not cuz he’s black, but because he has an “almost immigrant” experience and he’s been ‘blessed’ with all the goodness that the U.S. can offer those who pull themselves up by their bootstraps–AND he’s not grateful? Ai, pinche!
