7 Oct 2008With Daddy Yankee’s endorsement of John McCain, suddenly there is a revival of mixing Rican politics with popular music and fashion especially with the rap/reggaetonero culture.
To counter Daddy Yankee’s move to the right with McCain, Fat Joe publicly is lending his support to Barack Obama right from his head down to his toes.
And while we can debate the commodification of political figures on shoes and other gear, I wanna shift into the commodification of politics and politics show.
A few nights ago, my living room was filled wit poets, and one poet from Puerto Rico, mentioned that Daddy Yankee would completely erase all semblance of the separation between politics and show, by moderating a debate between the Puerto Rican candidates running for governor.
The 31-year-old singer will moderate a discussion between Luis Fortuño, Edwin Irizarry, Rogelio Figueroa and the actual governor of Puerto Rico, Aníbal Acevedo Vilá, who will respond to various questions posed by teens and young adults, as part of a campaign to get young people to vote called Vote or Shut Up.
Given how Puerto Rico, as a colony, is subject to the laws of the U.S., pero not all of it’s privileges, maybe it makes perfect sense to make a show of the debates. Maybe the candidates should answer questions in reggaeton style and have an entourage of scantily clad ass shaking aides. Maybe one questions should be:
” Y el precio de la gasolina?”
“Esta muy cara la gasolina!”

Thankfully Fat Joe’s endorsement has no relevance, as the people that follow him do not vote! I am glad to see Daddy Yankee make up his own mind and choose what he feels is right. Why exactly does anyone find this notion as wrong? Too bad more people cannot do the same..the world would be a lot better off if people had the courage to do what they felt was right and not what everyone else told them to do.
