Salma Wants You to Buy Diapers

3 Oct 2008Time to add yet another reason to the long list of reasons why I love Salma most of all. She just announced her support of a campaign put together by UNICEF and Pampers to help eradicate tetanus world-wide.
Hayek, spokeswoman for the Pampers/UNICEF campaign against tetanus, went to Sierra Leone last week to take part in an vaccination drive against the disease.
For each specially-marked pack of Pampers diapers sold through year-end, Procter & Gamble has pledged to donate a vaccine. UNICEF hopes to wipe out the scourge, blamed for the deaths of 140,000 babies and 30,000 mothers each year, by 2012.
Now, normal cynical me is rumbling and grumbling about stars and their stupid causes and why doesn’t stupid old Pampers just donate the damn vaccines without all of us having to buy their stupid old diapers?
But hawt and bothered me is oohing and ahhing over my sweet lovely Salmita’s good soul and marveling how much I’d love to hold her crying little self. And Pampers rawks totally.
Yum, yum.
Latin American Movie Makers Contemplate Bigger Picture

Felipe Calderon is taking a break from fighting corruption to focus on movie making. He met with big gun movie makers/actors Antonio Banderas and Manoel de Oliveira (amongst others) to talk about how Latin America and Spain/Portugal could start competing in a legitimate way against Hollywood.
In spite of the repressive government attendance, it still sounds like there were some interesting ideas being passed around at the event:

health care
taxes
bailout
Iraq
Iran
Pakistan
Energy
gay marriage
Hmm what’s missing? Only the stories of countless people. Only what is whispered in the barrios: the fear, the constant watching of your back. What’s the word? Oh yeah, immigration.

3 Oct 2008During the VP debate last night, I was cracking up out loud at Dem VP candidate Joe Biden’s use of the term “Bosniak”.
Pero it seems that it is a real word and wasn’t a gaffe. According to Media Matters for America:
According to the U.S. State Department, as of 2002, the population of Bosnia and Herzegovina consisted of the following ethnic groups: “Bosniak 48.3%, Serb 34.0%, Croat 15.4%, others 2.3%.”The CIA World Factbook states: “Bosniak has replaced Muslim as an ethnic term in part to avoid confusion with the religious term Muslim — an adherent of Islam.”

3 Oct 2008So far we’ve only had two presidential debates, and already tired of them. Sarah Palin’s performance yesterday wasn’t as bad as many expected/hoped. Pero her attempts to be cute just annoy me in the same way the other mothers at my daughter’s school annoy me with their fake ass ways.
