El Grito (de Lares) En Mi Boca

13:23 H | Topics: History - Puerto Rico

Today marks three years since Rican liberation leader Filiberto Ojeda Rios was murdered by the FBI. It was no coincidence that the FBI chose September 23 as the date of his execution. September 23, 1868 the date that Don Emeterio Betances issued the Grito de Lares, the Independence of Puerto Rico.

Today, activists y amantes de la libertad, call for a day of solidarity with Puerto Rico, a colony hidden behind the name of a commonwealth. A country and a people that are pandered to for votes when needed by presidential wannabes when the island's very status doesn't allow for the U.S. citizens by birth to vote for the person under whose laws they must live.

DEMANDS:

1. Self determination for the People of Puerto Rico for an independent sovereign Puerto Rico .

2. Freedom for all political prisoners held in US prisons for fighting for Puerto Rico’s Independence .

3. Clean up of US Navy military contamination in Vieques, Puerto Rico and the return of the land to the people of Vieques.

Status

Puerto Rico’s status under United States domination and control is that of a colony for past 110 years. Since 1953, the U.S. has held on to its control of Puerto Rico under a neo-colonial ‘commonwealth’ status.

Self determination

The colonial relationship of Puerto Rico to the United States under what ever name must end now.. Puerto Rico has the right to self determination and sovereignty as a people and as a nation. The United Nations affirmed this standing in numerous declarations seeking to end colonialism in the world.

United Nations

In the last 28 years the independence movement in Puerto Rico has introduced numerous resolutions the U.N. demanding its inalienable right to independence on June 8, 2008 obtained another ‘unanimous vote’ by the Special Committee of Decolonialization acknowledging the right of Puerto Rico to decide its own destiny.

Many movement people believe the time is now for the people of Puerto Rico to decide their own destiny.

I was in class today and this is the second time I've missed a major event this month. I remember when I first heard about this, the uproar, even among those who did not feel very adamantly about self-determination. That he was left to die, so many institutions made a public outcry. Even still, there is continuing investigation. I remember watching in the news in Arecibo, PR, I do not recall if it had been univision or telemundo. A police official said that he did not send in his force because he did not want to risk their lives; that it should have been the FBI who sent their officers in to seek him out. Various parties know the injustice of what took place three years ago today, but rarely do institutions responsible take the blame.
