Last night, Mexico celebrated it’s independence day from Spain with El Grito celebrations throughout Mexico. Unfortunately, one of those events was marred by two explosions that killed seven and wounded at least fifty:
The explosions occured shortly before midnight (0500 GMT) and just after the beginning of a re-enactment of the cry of independence known as “El Grito,” a traditional ceremony celebrated throughout the country.
Responsibility for the explosions, some 250 kilometers (155 miles) west of Mexico City, was not immediately clear, but dozens of police engaged in a shootout after chasing suspects in the vicinity, the El Sol de Morelia newspaper reported.
The army also took control of the entryways and exits of Morelia as well as city nightspots, the paper said.
Organized criminals are the main suspects behind the blast, although exploding bombs on a major national holiday seems to be far too symbolic of a practice for drug traffickers. I’m not sure, either, what the point would be for drug traffickers to blow people up? What would they be trying to prove/protest by doing that?
I wonder if there is something else going on that the Mexican government is trying to hide? Not the first time something like that has ever happened, right?

16 Sep 2008From Buzz Flash we get the news that apparently somebody thought it was a good, funny, ironic idea to put a racist picture of Barack Obama on the front of a box of pancake mix and sell that mix to other racists like Lou Dobbs.
A description of the box:
While Obama Waffles takes aim at Obama’s politics by poking fun at his public remarks and positions on issues, it also plays off the old image of the pancake-mix icon Aunt Jemima, which has been widely criticized as a demeaning stereotype. Obama is portrayed with popping eyes and big, thick lips as he stares at a plate of waffles and smiles broadly.

16 Sep 2008As soon as I could, I voted. As soon as my younger sister and prima could, I dragged their asses to vote. My hijas have been with me inside the voting booth and I explain the process, and no just the mechanics of pulling the lever (we’re still old school here in NYC), and no not just the political game/sideshow.
I don’t lie about my own ambivalence after stolen elections and the fact that my own familia who lives in Puerto Rico can’t vote ambivalent. Pero given the reality of the day, what is happening in our communities, can we afford not to vote, not to engage?

Fidel Castro has won the South African Ubuntu award for his contributions to “humankind beyond boundaries.”
Castro won the award “for the role he played in the Cuban revolution and worldwide contribution to the struggle for an alternative, just and humane society,” the statement said.
According to our research on the award, which was first given in 2006 to Nelson Mandela, there seems to be little relation to the award and the current realities of Cuba, rather it seems to be focused on Cuba and Castro’s international work, specifically African liberation struggles.
