I really liked this piece about why ICE raids must be stopped because it rewrites the traditional pro-immigration rhetoric based in “we’re such good people, thus we deserve to immigrate!” As Mala pointed out a while ago, that rhetoric has all sorts of problems with it.
The authors of this article talk about ‘family’ within the context of pro-immigration, but they move away from the we’re-good-people narrative to center ‘family’ within the discussion of international human rights:
Family and community rights are enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Article 16 mentions the right to found a family, and posits that the family is “the natural and fundamental group unit of society.”
I don’t know about you, but I can name scores of community members, family members, and random Latino celebrities that are dealing with or have died from diabetes. That’s why, although I am very critical of major organizations (namely, they are so disconnected from communities, most donations go to pay salaries rather than helping community members), I am very pleased to see that the American Diabetes Association is targeting Latino populations with it’s new diabetes awareness toolkit.
To celebrate the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month and to recognize those in the Hispanic/Latino American population who have, or are at risk for, diabetes, the American Diabetes Association, through a grant from the Abbott Fund, is introducing its new Adult Prevention Toolkit designed specifically for community-based and faith-based organizations in Hispanic/Latino communities. The toolkit provides organizations with comprehensive and culturally relevant information on diabetes and healthy living. Throughout Hispanic Heritage Month, the American Diabetes Association will also be hosting Feria de Salud Por Tu Familia, an outdoor Latino health festival in cities across the United States.
Tell your loved ones about this, if you’re a community organizer, spread the information around. This is so important–I’m tired of seeing loved ones die because of something that is manageable. Let’s love ourselves enough to take care of ourselves and each other.

My political mentor Richie Perez (RIP), used to say that voting in and of itself was not going to solve all of the injustices in the world, but that voting was a weapon in our toolbox and as such should be used.
In New York State, where I live, the deadline for registering to vote in the upcoming presidential election is fast approaching (October 10th). I know of a friend of mine who went to vote in the local elections earlier this week and didn’t find her name on the registers. So double check!!! Make sure you are registered!
VotoLatino, is good resource for registering and finding out when the deadline to register in your state is.
Use all the weapons in your toolbox! Vote!

The Cuban Five are five Cuban men who are in U.S. prisons, serving four life sentences and 75 years collectively, after being arrested in September 1998 and wrongly convicted in U.S. federal court in Miami in 2001.
They are Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González and René González. They were falsely accused by the U.S. government of committing espionage conspiracy against the United States, and related charges.
But the Five pointed out vigorously in their defense that they were fighting terrorism — they were monitoring the actions of CIA-backed Miami-based terrorist groups, in order to prevent attacks on Cuba.
The Five’s actions were never directed at the U.S.government. They never harmed anyone nor ever possessed nor used any weapons while in the United States.

Let the dick waving of imperial vs. Latin American politicos begin! Yesterday both Venezuela and Bolivia ordered the U.S. Ambassadors in their countries “fuera”.
Hugo Chavez accused the U.S. diplomat of conspiring against his government and saying he would also withdraw his own envoy from Washington immediately.
Chavez had been threatening to kick out U.S. diplomats for some time. Seems the straw that broke Hugito’s back was Bolivia’s expulsion of the U.S. Ambassador, accusing him of aiding violent protests that as of last night have claimed eight lives.

The people of Haiti find themselves in critical need right now, dealing with the devastation after a series of hurricanes. They need our support.
In the NYC area you can contact Ninaj Raoul at the Haitian Women for Haitian Refugees office (amazing work being done there for years).
