Eva Mendes Angry that Nipples are Censored

So, anybody who knows me even slightly knows that Salma Hayek is my girl. I am sure that someday Salmita will see the queer light and become my wife, or at the very least, girlfriend. But until that day, I will settle for my other girl, Eva Mendes.

You see, Eva makes the news for all sorts of naughty things, for example, getting angry because her nipple was censored, while various forms of guns, violence and murder are given free reign over our television sets.

Eva Mendes is furious with the censor board for allowing violence on TV screens and not her Calvin Klein TV ad that featured a nipple slippage. Since the ad was pulled from U.S. TV networks last month (Aug08) before it aired, only few people have seen the Secret Obsession promo. The ad came under fire for being too provocative.

The actress admits she’s a little upset the sexy ad won’t be seen on TV, she said: “We can show guns everywhere and stuff but we can’t show a woman’s nipple; that’s a bit backwards to me.”

As a child of a former “make love not war” flower power hippy, I see Eva’s point. As an eager girlfriend want-to-be of Eva’s, I see her point even more. As a very sensible feminist, I have to wonder if maybe the point is to get rid of the guns and violence rather than increase consumer mentality around women’s bodies.

Ai, such conflicts in my life. I hardly know what to do about them all.

Northwest Tree Planters and Farmworkers United

It’s always inspiring to me to see workers coming together to stand up for their rights in spite of incredible odds, so I was really moved when I learned about the Northwest Tree Planters and Farmworkers United out in Oregon.

This organization works to, “empower farmworkers to understand and take action against systematic exploitation and all of its effects. To achieve this end, PCUN is involved in community and workplace organizing on many different levels.”

The thing is, most of the workers in this organization are from Mexico or Columbia, and many speak indigenous languages rather than Spanish. Not to be deterred, PCUN uses multiple forms of media (including radio and theater) to do educational and grassroots outreach.

Given that employers often work very hard to make sure that traditional tensions between workers are exploited to their benefit, it’s always good to know that some workers are finding ways to negotiate that and become stronger because of it.

water_bottles_turqoise.jpgIn an effort to draw attention to the human rights crisis facing immigrants coming from Arizona, today The Chicago Immigrant Defense Committee (IDC) is handing out 2000 bottles of water during lunchtime in downtown Chicago.

While hundreds of migrants needlessly die in the Arizona border desert, Joe Arpaio, Sheriff of Maricopa County/Phoenix, deputizes hundreds of self-proclaimed white supremacists who conduct sweeps of Latino neighborhoods and recklessly violate the rights of immigrants.
Wells Fargo Bank leases luxurious office spaces to Sheriff Arpaio in downtown Phoenix, AZ. A delegation of leaders will deliver a letter to Chicago Wells Fargo officials at high noon requesting that the bank stop supporting the Sheriff’s wholesale violations of human rights by not renewing his lease in Phoenix. Similar demands have been made by leaders in Phoenix and San Francisco.
Arizona is the proving ground for large-scale programs designed to destroy the rights of immigrants and tear apart their families and communities. If these violations continue unchecked, they could spread to the entire country—especially since Arizona is the home state of John McCain.

ingrid_betancourt.jpgDuring Ingrid Betancourt’s 4 day visit in Rome, she met with the pope, and she made what some would call stunning statements as to the role her once captors, the FARC, should play in Colombia.

Addressing her kidnappers directly, she said: “After almost seven years, I can say I know you, I know your organisation, your ideas, your objectives.” The world, she said, is inviting them to open their hearts “to something more than political and military calculations,” and to “make room for peace in your minds.”

And peace can come only “through the way of democracy, mutual respect and law,” she said. She asked the Colombian government to recognise the political role of the FARC, “knowing that we are different, and have different ideas.”

Martes Morning Musica : Juanes Odio por Amor

6:53 am By Maegan La Mala · Music · Comments Off

juamailing.jpgJuanes doesn’t need our help when it comes to promotion, but his latest pop song, Amor Por Odio, released to radio yesterday, is a fun, catchy listen.

Recorded in August and set for inclusion in a planned special/expanded edition release of La Vida… es Un Ratico in November, “Odio por Amor” is an instantly classic Juanes anthem in the vein of “A Dios Le Pido”. The just released track finds Juanes giving a heartfelt appeal that we re-evaluate our approach to relationships – whether it be an exchange between lovers, family or even nations. The universal need for this simple but vital reminder to exchange love for hate is reinforced by Juanes, for the first time-ever, singing the song’s chorus in both Spanish and English – with the engaging refrain of “Es tiempo de cambiar / It’s time to change.”

Unfortunately, you have only two options in order to listen. You can sit with the radio on all day and wait or you can go to the Univision link.
