One thing I’ve noticed since I started blogging at Vivir Latino, is that the VL community needs to come out of the dark shadows and expose themselves! We have a lot of lurkers here–which is beautiful! But I want to get to know you all! So i have named today Vivir Latino DE-lurk day!

Come out of the shadows, dear Vivir Latinos, pull up a chair and tell us a little about yourself! (and if you’re a little shy, you could start by telling us all who is your favorite super hero/ine and why)

waddell.jpgLike most U.S. citizens, you probably weren’t aware that the Paralympics began this past Saturday in Beijing, China. What are the Paralympics? Originally billed as the “Parallel Olympics” to signify the fact that they ran “parallel” to the Olympics, the Paralympics is a two week long sporting event that centers disabled athletes. Modifications are made in different sports to accommodate the needs of physically, mentally and learning disabled athletes, including lowering nets in volleyball, and using bells to guide blind athletes.

The Many Rumors of Sarah Palin

SarahTrig.jpgI’ve learned to take rumors for what they are…often not true, often partially true, often completly true. Sarah Palin has had a huge amount of rumors swirling about her since she announced her candidacy, one of the biggest being that her daughter gave birth to Trig (the youngest child you’ve probably seen in the arms of the older children) and Palin was passing it off as her own. I, frankly, thought that this particular rumor was completly out there untrue, until the Palin camp released a statement saying her daughter was really preggers.

Ah U.S short term memory and the ability to be distracted is an amazing thing. Apparently all the flag waving, chants of U.S.A., and talk of Hockey Moms worked, as a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll shows John McCain leading over Barack Obama 54% to 44% among likely voters.

Poll numbers are constantly shifting and more often than not based on biased questions and perspectives, but regardless numbers are scary, especially since according to a USA TODAY article, the boost in numbers is credited to Sarah Palin.

The Republican National Convention has given John McCain and his party a significant boost, a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll taken over the weekend shows, as running mate Sarah Palin helps close an “enthusiasm gap” that has dogged the GOP all year.

260xStory.jpgHurricane Ike plows it’s way through the Caribbean today, with Havana, the capital of Cuba in it’s path.

Ike already went through Haiti and the Dominican Republic as a category 3 hurricane, killing at least 58 people in Haiti alone and one reported death in the Dominican Republic. Ike has since been downgraded to a category 2 storm, with 105 mile-per-hour winds.

Haiti has been hit particularly hard, with a death toll of at least 319 people from an unrelenting four storms in a row.

”With the others we lost houses, we lost animals and we lost plantations. Never bodies,” said Lisemene Ferry Raphael, 46, standing across from her dead 12-year-old god daughter.

There are bodies on almost every other corner inside the town, where two rivers and the torrential rain of Ike swallowed houses and swept children and old women downstream, according to The Miami Herald, which has the only international reporter at the town along Route 1 on the road to the city Gonaives.

Franzt Samedi’s 5-year-old adopted daughter, Tamesha Jean, was among the dead.

”I’m the one who she calls Papa. I’m the one who is responsible for her. If she were with me she would not have died,” Samedi said.

Lucía Mendez: I Heart the Gays

Miami’s South Florida Blade reports that Mexican pop diva and soap star Lucía Mendez is embracing her status as a gay icon in a recent kick-off of her tour of gay clubs in the U.S.:

A seasoned pro, Mendes (sic) takes her mark at the press conference before the Spanish language television news cameras. She poses and preens behind severe fashion sunglasses, like a red-carpet fashion plate.

Then she began talking.

“I love the gay community,” she says, as the photographers call her name. “The gay audiences have kept Cher and Madonna alive. They buy albums, they listen to my music, and they love me through good times and through bad.”

The Blade reports that Méndez’s statements should put to rest the fears of many a gay fan who believed Lucía to be anti-gay marriage because of this interview:

Yep, that was Lucía basically saying that as a woman of “The Word” (no, not The L Word, the Bible) she is reluctant to comment on the marriage issue. Did you see her face change when they told her gay marriage is now legal in California? Ha-ha.

But now Méndez appears to have changed her stance. With dollar signs in her eyes, she appeared before Spanish language press stating, according to the Blade, “I support [gay marriage]…Equal rights for all is peace.”

How convenient!

DaddyYankee.jpgYesterday morning, an interview with Puerto Rican reggaeton artist and John McCain endorser, Daddy Yankee, aired on Univision’s Al Punto with Jorge Ramos.

For a while Jorge Ramos danced around the issue of Daddy Yankee’s political endorsement, instead talking about his movie/cd Talento del Barrio, that has the novel story line of a young Rican making it out of the caserios via his music.

When Jorge Ramos finally asks about the endorsement, Daddy Yankee said it was based on McCain’s position on immigration. Someone please get Daddy Yankee a clue.
