Turns out that the rumors that Shakira would be singing a song about Islam with Arab singer, Dania Youssef are ‘total fabrications in every respect,’ according to Shakira’s publicist.
I wasn’t really that interested in the rumors that she would be singing a song about Islam–but now I’m interested in knowing why she’s not. And why it’s necessary to make sure we all know that all rumors about said topic are total fabrications in every respect. Is the Latina siren anxious about possibly inspiring a Dunkin’ Donuts, Michelle Malkin led boycott?

The back of 17-year-old Keith Smith-Tourville after the police were finished with him.
In spite my best intentions, I have wound up liking resident Vivir Latino Troll, EYE OF TEXAS. Don’t ask me why, maybe it’s the name. I always did like all caps in a name. Announcing your presence with authority! Anyway, Eye makes an interesting argument in VL’s post on Amy Goodman’s arrest. S/he says:
There were also protesters and incidents at the DNC, but the leftist media chose not to cover it because of the bad image it would have given the squeaky clean Demoncraps. Go figure.
Now, seeing as VL did cover incidents of police brutality at the DNC, and really complicated the very privileged space of the convention to begin with, I know that EYE is not talking about VL. But s/he does point to an intriguing idea. Republicans are positive that the media didn’t report on the violence at the DNC while reporting nonstop on violence at the RNC–and Democrats are fairly certain of the same thing.
My question, should it matter where this violence happens? Why does it matter? Shouldn’t the most important thing be that no citizen, no human being, should ever be treated like the young man above was by the people put in place to protect us? Should media report on the type of brutality that causes the the bruises and scrapes shown in the picture? Does it matter if members of the government are ‘being protected’ from 17-year-old kids by gun wielding cops that like to leave boot prints embedded on skin?
What do you think?

3 Sep 2008I was kinda surprised to read today how much meeting the Pope meant to Ingrid Betancourt. I didn’t realize many of us Catholics/ex-Catholics still felt any serious emotional connection the Pope, most Catholics I know are lovers of La Virgin and occasionally remember some ancient rule (like eating fish on Friday’s) as way to show a seasonal respect to La Virgin.
I can see Betancourt’s point though, that hearing a trusted voice after being held captive for years has a way of being inspirational.
“It’s hard to explain the psychological effect this has on a prisoner, what it meant to know we hadn’t been forgotten at a time when we thought we didn’t exist,” Betancourt said. “The voice of the Holy Father was like a light.”
Betancourt said she told the pope about her distress for the hundreds of hostages FARC still holds and her concern for Colombia’s future after decades of civil war.
“The pope is pained by the suffering of the prisoners,” she said. “I know his prayers are also dedicated to obtaining the freedom of all the prisoners and peace in my country.”

Hmm I don’t remember ICE being on the official list of attendees at the RNC. According to a tweet from the Coldsnap Legal Collective, the grassroots legal team in the Twin Cities:
ICE agents are entering jail and pulling out arrestees with “foreign-sounding names!”
Confirmation of this and information is much appreciated. We’ll keep an eye on this gente.

3 Sep 2008Flipping channels the other day I saw, for the first time in I don’t know how long, a performer who mesmerized me. Concha Buika, a Spaniard by birth and Guinean by blood, is an artist that represents the face of the new Europe.
Born in Mallorca and raised among the Roma, she delivers Spanish styles such as flamenco mixed with soul and jazz influences, reflecting what can only be described an exquisite mingling of cultures. Check her out:
Buika — a musical mentee of Chavela Vargas – is starting to gain notoriety outside of her native Spain and recently performed at Mexico’s legendary Cervantino Festival. Concha says she considers herself a “niece” of Mexico and in an recent interview had some really lovely observations about Mexican culture and music.
Check out more of her videos on YouTube here.

Last night’s theme of the RNC was “Country First” and it is clear current policy is not people first especially when it comes to the immigrant community. So while there are more speeches tonight and VP pick Palin will talk about her role as a woman and as a mother, there will be no talk of immigrant mothers and their issues. As Palin’s teen daughter moves forward with her now very public pregnancy, there will be no talk of immigrant women giving birth in chains.

Offices of Immigration and Customs Enforcement
425 “Eye” St. NW Washington D.C.
Sponsored by the D.C. Alliance for Immigrant Justice and the Metro D.C. Interfaith Sanctuary Network
On August 25, agents of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) descended on Howard Industries in the small town of Laurel, Mississippi. Agents arrested 595 workers in the largest immigration raid in U.S. history. Workers have been separated from their families and the local immigrant community has been terrorized. The superintendent of the county school district reported that half of the 160 Latino students were absent from school the next day.
“Basically, they create a major humanitarian crisis for families and spouses and children,” Bill Chandler of the Jackson-based Mississippi Immigrant Rights Alliance (MIRA) told the Hattiesburg American. In some cases, he said, both parents were now gone in the raid, leaving their families totally alone.
The ACLU is investigating cases of civil rights abuses that took place during the raid. “We are deeply concerned by reports that workers at the factory where the raid occurred were segregated by race or ethnicity and interrogated, the factory was locked down for several hours, workers were denied access to counsel, and ICE failed to inform family members and lawyers following the raid where the workers were being jailed,” Mónica Ramírez, a staff attorney with the ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project who is meeting with family members, said in a statement.
At this rally and press conference, activists from the Washington area immigrant rights movement will gather to speak out against this raid and demand an end to raids and deportations. The Mississippi raid comes shortly after a devastating raid at Dulles Airport and a smaller action in suburban Maryland just this week.
