1 Sep 2008All throughout the Democratic National Convention, immigration was brought up in two contexts: good vs. bad. Certainly this discourse will be repeated during the RNC.
“Good” immigrants, according to the politicos and the mainstream media that parrots them, are the ones who follow the laws, and when they don’t face the consequences, in the form of raids, separation from families, deportation, incarceration and fear. “Good” immigrants work hard and don’t make too much noise. They don’t have more children then they can afford and they don’t live on welfare. They speak English and study hard and get good grades and try to go to college. Within this context there are bills. Bills so that “good” immigrants and their children can go to college and pay in-state rates (like the DREAM Act).

Here on VivirLatino, there has been much discussion on the racial politics of Latino identity, specifically Afro- Latinos. AfroLatinos are ignored politically in the U.S. culture that sees race as a strict black and white issue. In Latino media, AfroLatinos might as well not exist, unless we are tragic novela figures, maids and farm workers.
A new website attempts to fill in the holes and give voice to AfroLatinos.

Early this morning, a car bomb exploded in the Colombian city of Cali, killing four people. The explosion took place near local courts according to news reports.
While no one has claimed credit for the attacks, the Colombian government was quick to point the finger at the FARC and the mainstream U.S. media is quick to remind everyone that Cali has a reputation for drug related violence.

1 Sep 2008Hurricane Dolly, earlier this year, raised fears of just how far the Department of Homeland Security would go in terms of it’s mistreatment of immigrants.
Hurricane Gustav is raising those same fears as it heads into the Gulf Region and a mandatory evacuation order is in place.
According to the New Orleans Worker Center for Racial Justice:
We have won an important assurance from DHS. Immigrants evacuating the path of Gustav will not be targeted by immigration checkpoints.
